Isn't there some kind of gland back there like an oil gland or something? With dogs it is an anal gland that htey use to mark scent and it can become impacted and have to be expressed like you were saying. With birds I think there is this oil gland for preening. Could this be what it is? I am not sure where this gland is though. I hope he is ok. Let us know what happens.
