Hello Don and Tom,

Yes, most if not all galliformes are considered “Game birds” or simply “Poultry” in the lower 48 states of our Republic. Several states proclaim various species as “protected game” species. I don’t know what the rules are in Texas, but in Georgia the protected “game birds” are the Bobwhite quail, and the Morning dove. The Turkey is another story so I will not go into that now. Galliformes all…except for the Dove.

The rules are blurred from time to time, but here (In GA.) they say that I need a permit to sell any bobwhite bird/egg in any state sponsored event that includes but is not limited to state sponsored publications, like the Georgia Farmers Market Bulletin, and any local fair, etc.
I know it sounds silly, but there is most likely a good reason for it. Short of a good reason, one should look at whom the law/regulation is protecting.

Ken
