When I was a kid, we raised Coturnix Quail. We had some straddle-legged chicks. My dad used to use a piece of yarn to tie their legs at the width apart they should be. I don't remember how long he left them tied, but we never lost another chick to this terrible thing. My dad is gone now, so I can't ask him, but hope this helps.
