This is typical calling between the cages. They are just checking in with each other. Mine usually do the Pew-Pew thing at least twice a day; once in the early morning hours and late evening. If they seem to be getting along with each other without fighting, you'll be OK. You can tell the males from the females since they will have red feathers near their vents. The males will sometimes crow if they are missing their females.
