Hi Dave, Good luck if you try again!! Sometimes it takes a couple of attempts before you get any success, and we all learn along the way. It may well have been the grit that was the problem with your little guy, although a little bit of greens & supplemental food should be okay after they've grown a bit, say a week or two, & then grit once they're around 6 weeks as Rhonda said.

I often had problems stabilising the temp in the brooder, especially in the summer as the room I had it in gets very hot. The dimmer switch is a great idea, I had to change bulbs a few times as the weeks went on, a dimmer switch would have been more controllable in hindsight.

What is it with dogs & baby Buttons?! Our dog was totally obsessed, she would sit with her nose up at the brooder for hours watching the chicks run about. In fact I think even I sat & watched the chicks more than I watched TV for a few weeks!!

Keep us posted Dave, we'd love to hear how you get on. And there are loads of great, knowledgable people on here who will give you tips & advice whenever you need it, just ask!
