Hi, Glad you have had your first egg. Sometimes it can differ when the females first lay, it can be anything from 8 weeks upwards depending on the bird & its environment, some are just a little later than others starting. Regarding the pecking, more room may help, & you may have to separate the peckers, if you can work out which birds are the main offenders. If one of the birds is pecked quite bad then you may have to isolate it from the others, they will pick on an injured bird even more, especially if it is bleeding, & they will sometimes peck an injured quail to death. It's fairly normal for birds to squabble once they mature, to define the pecking order, but it can be a hard habit to break once established. I hope this helps somewhat.
