You probably didn't do anything wrong. Some chicks that are born just aren't strong enough to survive. You can usually expect one or two out of six-seven to pass away. There is usually a defeat that can't be corrected. The non-slip shelf liner is a good idea for new chicks. I leave mine in the brooder for a couple of weeks at least. You will want to keep the temperature at around 95 deg the first week lowering the temperature by 5 deg each week thereafter until fully feathered. You'll want to use gamebird crumble crushed very fine for newly hatched chicks; after a week or so you may introduce hard boiled eggs chopped up very fine also.
