Hey Holly. Hmmm, that's a difficult one. I've put out six week old quails in September & they've adjusted pretty well, but I guess it depends how warm your avairy is. I mean, we had a very mild winter last year, so there weren't many properly frosty nights to worry about. As we didn't have much of a summer this year it may stay pretty warm until as late as November, it was a bit chilly last night though so you can never tell. Last year some of my birds kept their summer plumage until November, which baffled me, but I guess that's down to the weather lol. I mean if you incubated now it would obviously be a while before the chicks reached 6 weeks & were ready to go out, and by then it may be pretty cold. What is the indoor part of your aviary like? My indoor flight is a shed, so they're pretty sheltered & I make sure I put a fresh layer of hay down on their bed every day before it gets dark to keep them warm. Although saying that, for some reason they prefer to sleep outside, so I put hay beds down in the corner they like to sleep in & I also put up plastic so the wind & rain can't get to that corner, they snuggle up pretty good & keep each other warm. When I first put them out I would usher them into the indoor flight at dusk to make sure they were in the warmest bit of the aviary, but yu know what quails are like, they'll sleep wherever they fancy lol. i think the trick is to do it as gradula as possible, I mean going from a heated brooder in a warm room to outside can be a shock, so maybe you could try putting them in a much cooler room or a garage etc for the last week before you put them out, & put plenty of bedding for them to snuggle into. It's such a pity your last batch of eggs didn't hatch, I think now would be okay for 6 week olds. But you never know, it may stay warm for a while yet. Your solitary quail must be lonely after the incident with the escapees. Did you only manage to recover the one?
