Yes, I always used paper towels until I had chicks with this problem. It's best to use the rubber shelf liner for the first week, then switch to paper towels. As Rhonda said it's very cheap & it's a miracle worker when it comes to straddle leg. It sounds like your little chick is quite weak, alot of this is due to hatching problems & sometimes humidity levels in the bator whilst hatching. Maybe try boosting his energy by giving him a little mashed up boiled egg, and alot of people swear by a little sugar water too. Hatching is very exhausting for these little guys. Is he/she eating & drinking okay?
