Dear Pam, I feel your frustration as many veterans do. I would suggest when contacting St louis with the SF181 form(Request Pertaining to Military Records), make sure you ask for records with as much detail as posible. "Ask for any and all records" when requesting your records. Up until 1974 the army kept unit rosters and morning reports on data cards. For example, send in another SF181 to include any and all morning reports and unit rosters. Many times if the compnay clerk was wired tight he would have made an entry something like this---Smith wasn't present at morning formation due to TDY status, Jones was place on profile for "jungle rot" Evans KIA with date, etc. Another place to make this request is the National Archives in DC and Marlyland.
Don't buy the that special op units did not keep records. If by chance the records your looking for are not in your husband's military jacket file by requesting morning reports, after action reports and unit rosters you can give your claims credence by these efforts. How? Your husband (name) went to sick call for back pain this morning etc.
When requesting be sure to include a specfic definition on the SF181 and make sure you put at the end of the any description "This request to include any and all medical reports, doctor notes, nurses notes, xrays, lab reports, orthopedic reports and so etc. Good luck, Keith
