Dear Mrs. Welch,

I found this statement on NEWS AND NOTES, FOR FLORIDA VETERANS, Veterans Service Center, VA Regional Office
St. Petersburg, FL, July 2008:

"Based on the recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Institute of Medicine task force, the
Secretary of VA announced his decision that the evidence
warrants establishment of a presumption of service
connection based on service in the Republic of Vietnam for
primary AL Amyloidosis. As required by law, a notice will
be published in the Federal Register announcing this
addition and the Code of Federal Regulations (38 CFR
3.309(e)) will be amended to include this disease."

What this means is that the VA will publish this in the Federal Register, allowing 60 days for public comment. Thereafter, the benefit for AL Amyloidosis should become law.

I searched the Federal Register this morning, but nothing has been posted as of yet. It should appear shortly.

In the meantime you may want to complete a VA Form 21-534, APPLICATION FOR DEPENDENCY AND INDEMNITY COMPENSATION. You can obtain the form from VFW, ALG, DAV, or your County Service Officer. Have the Service Officer attach to your 21-534 your husband's DD 214 and a terminal hospital report showing treatment for AL Amyloidosis
