I was simply curious, as this site has been in low attendance lately (I'll blame Facebook), what makes US become nurses? Is it really the same things that make us susceptible to addiction and "running away" from our lives and problems (and mostly ourselves)? We are greatly in tune with feeling of ourselves and others, we are compassionate, understanding, forgiving, empathetic... list goes on....

For me, to be open and honest, I have always been a nurse. My Grandmother was a nurse, she was naturally a compassionate and caring person, she graduated nursing school in 1942, near her 30's. She then got married and had a family. She bought her parents their first house amidst the depression and raised and funded 3 children.

Although I found her an excellent nurse, I did find her a bit withdrawn as a mother/grandmother. (I was able to go to work with her once as a child---an awesome LPN or aid really spent a lot of time with me showing me everything, most notably the reflex hammer--- I was 6...) I don't know if I am comparing her to my other Grandmother, who was very maternal and spent a lot of quality time with me, or whether she finally got burnt out.

Looking back, having my experiences as a nurse, mother, person, substance abuser, I am wondering what is really inborn, taught, and what really makes us, Us.

I have always wanted to be a nurse, went through a lot to be one, and then miserably FAILED because I couldn't overcome my own issues, withdrew into myself, and subsequently screwed up the happy life I thought I would have.

I have been able to overcome my issues, and have grown immensely in the past 8 years. Although I haven't been working, it has been the roller coaster as it is for all of us. I am happy and thankful, I don't think I would have stayed home with my children and been the Great Mom I know I am has I been sucked into the lifestyle of an overworked nurse.

So, were we born nurses, made nurses, or simply went that way because people needed us? I know this isn't psych class, just wanted some opinions... getting to know ourselves is a good way to not re-live the past and make the same mistakes.

I am really proud of every person that has come to this site, irregardless of their issues with their subsequent boards and vices. Not only have they made the sacrifices, they continue not to give up!!! What great influences and role models you are!!!
