I wasn't able to stop either, until I was busted and once that happened, total fear set in. Anxiety and fear of the unknown...what a horrible feeling. That was over four years ago and I'm glad it's past me. I, too was caught, and my employer had me arrested. I was charged with obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. Talk about sick and scared. I could not eat or sleep for days, but a got a good lawyer (he wasn't cheap by any means). Was able to have the state defer to PTI (pre trial intervention). So, I did that along with turning myself in to our state monitoring program to save myself and my license. I ended up doing two monitoring programs at once. That was the most difficult part of my life, but because I was in a state monitoring program for nurses, PTI officials only had be do 6 months versus 18, so the first six months sucked. I got thru it, somehow...Once I had completed PTI, I was able to have my record expunged. My advise to you, Desperate, is to stop the drinking, NOW. It is not helping and may only hinder your outcome. Do you have a monitoring program in Canada? If so, you might as well turn yourself in and get started with the inevitable (sp?). And to you Tina, either stop diverting or see your nurse manager or talk to EAP. I was told that if I had told my nurse manager before I was caught, I would have saved myself from the arrest...I would have still been placed in the nursing monitoring program, but I would have saved myself alot of fear from the arrest and court issues.
