I was "just a drunk" too until I had gastric bypass a few years ago. Couldn't "stomach" alcohol anymore. Mom got very sick and I found I could still get high...off her left over narcs. I was off an running. You see, I have learned that I was born with an illness...the disease of "more", more of whatever makes me feel better or conversely, numb. So, there is no real difference between a drunk and an addict. We share a common malady...the disease of more. And that is why I call myself SyckRN.
