Abuse of a substance is when you touch the stove top, "ouch," it hurts I won't do that again! Addiction is when you touch the stove top repeatedly and it doesn't matter that you know it is hot and inflicts pain. I don't think that everyone that deals with substance issues can simply just remember the consequences and be fine with not taking it again. If it was that easy then we wouldn't have abused it again to begin with after the first exposure.
