Subject: I think there is also the difference in that...while Roger had the capacity to -look- dangerous at times, Bree always felt safe with him. I think that she generally felt safe in the company of anyone until she came across Bonnet. That seemed to shake her completely. Remember how she acted with Roger when he returned to the Ridge? Whnever he tried to get close to her she would skitter off. I thought it was the perfect thing to do, when he stripped off his clothes, baring himself in front of her, making himself completely vulnerable. He put all the control in her court there. I really think it was that which recovered her sense of safety with him.
In reply to: Jayn 's message, "There was a quote somewhere in here describing Bree's friend seeing Roger (in our time) and describing him as looking like a pirate. Most of us today think of pirates being glamorous, sexy (Jonny Depp anyone?) etc. Does anyone have any thoughts on Bree's (normal 20th century woman) attraction to that dark pirate thing and then her inner confusion (not a strong enough word but you know what I mean) after Steven Bonnet? Remember the book Claire was reading in the doctors' room about a pirate ravishing some chick? No doubt Bree has read similar and no doubt she (and all of us) has some tiny fantasy about this sort of thing. To be confronted with the reality was clearly horrifying beyond words but there must have been a part inside Bree somewhere wanting it - at least until it happened. Would mess my mind I know." on 09:13:46 10/25/09 Sun

[> aside from the whole rape issue, pirates in romance novels are rarely as dirty, disease-ridden, and just plain GROSS as they would've been in real life. Hygene was bad enough on land compared to our standards. On a boat, it just got worse -- shellb, 14:49:11 10/25/09 Sun
