Be forewarned that the book discussions encompass Diana's PUBLISHED BOOKS!
If you have not yet read the first 6 novels, The Companion/Through The Stones,
ALL the Lord John books (as of the end of 2007), or her short stories,
chances are you are going to encounter messages and/or QOTD passages that will contain "spoilers" in them.
And if you HAVE read the 6 main books but NOT the Companion/Through The Stones,
you may encounter two spoilers if they are ever quoted from - Part 11: Works in Progress.

Excerpts from Diana's unpublished works:

Discussions regarding Diana's "in progress" works are NOT posted here. Vicki has set up a board exclusively for the discussion of unpublished excerpts and you can find it here: Excerpt board, so please visit there for all the spoiler discussions you can possibly ever want! Thank you. (But it is ok to post notices here when there is a new excerpt to keep us informed.)

For those who are interested in reading some of Herself's thoughts in her own words,
here is a link to her folder at the Books and Writers Community at: Compuserve. You do not need to register to read the messages. Be aware that it is possible that you may come across spoilers.

Herself also has a blog. You can read and comment, if you'd like, at: Voyages of the Artemis.

“Aye, marvelous,” he said, absorbed, “Look at them. Such busy wee strivers as they are, all pushing and writhing against one another – and such a mass of them!”
He watched for a few moments more, exclaiming under his breath, then straightened up, shaking his head in amazement.
“I’ve never seen such a thing, Sassenach. Ye’d told me about the germs, aye, but I never in life imagined them so! I thought they might have wee teeth, and they don’t – but I never kent they would have such handsome, lashing wee tails, or swim about in such numbers.”
“Well some microorganisms do,” I said, moving to peer into the eyepiece again myself. “These particular little beasts aren’t germs, though – they’re sperms.”

We shook in each others arms, laughing until we came uncoupled and rolled apart.
Recovering, Jamie slapped my hip. Get on your knees, Sassenach.
         Why?
If youll not let me be spiritual about it, youll have to put up wi my baser nature. Im going to be a beast. He bit my neck. Do you want me to be a horse, a bear, or a dog?
         A hedgehog.
A hedgehog? And just how does a hedgehog make love? he demanded.
No, I thought, I wont. I will not. But I did. Very carefully, I replied, giggling helplessly.

No easy conquest, Gideon executed a hop like a corkscrew. There was a small eek! and a sudden feeling of emptiness behind him, as Claire was slung off into the brush like a bag of flour. The horse suddenly yielded to the pull on his mouth, and shot down the path in the wrong direction, hurtling through a screen of brambles and skidding to a halt that nearly threw him onto his hindquarters in a shower of mud and dead leaves. Then he straightened out like a snake, shook his head, and trotted nonchalantly over to exchange nuzzles with Rogers horse, which was standing at the edge of the spring clearing, watching them with the same bemusement exhibited by its dismounted rider.
All right there? asked Roger, raising one eyebrow.
Certainly, Jamie replied, trying to gasp for breath while keeping his dignity. And you?

The ram, a huge wooly creature named Hughie, with testicles that hung nearly to the ground like wool-covered footballs, shouldered his massive way into the front rank with a loud and autocratic Bahh! Fergus, who had reached my side by this time, picked up a whole cabbage and hurled it at Hughie with considerable force and fair accuracy.
         Tais-toi! he said irritably.
Hughie shied and let out an astonished, high-pitched Beh! As the cabbage bounced off his padded back. Then, shaking himself back into some semblance of dignity, he trotted off, testes swinging with offended majesty.

  • I am trying to remember the exact phrase that Jamie said to Claire, whenhe was telling her about Lord John's love for him...the phrase went along these lines: "I knew he loved me, and I couldn't love him back the same way, and he wouldn't accept counterfeit for real currency"...something like that. Can anyone help me with the correct phrasing? Is one of my favorite quotes from the books. -- Ayira from Panama (curious), 11:12:18 08/14/09 Fri

Well, youve a point there, Ill admit. When it comes to teeth, yeve the edge on me, and no mistake. Bouton cocked an ear suspiciously at this gracious speech, but went back to the low-pitched growl.
Jamie hooked one foot over the other, like one prepared to pass the time of day indefinitely. The multicolored light from the window washed his face with blue, making him look like one of the chilly marble statues in the cathedral next door.
Surely youve better things to do than harry innocent visitors? he asked, conversationally. Ive heard of you youre the famous fellow that sniffs out sickness, no? Weel, then, why are they wastin ye on silly things like door-guarding, when ye might be makin yourself useful smelling gouty toes and pustulant arseholes? Answer me that, if ye will!

I thought we'd have a light hearted look at animal behavior and our beloved characters' reactions to said behavior this week. Ah, said Roger, I see.

Jamie met his eyes and nodded, relieved to be so easily understood.

I dont see, Brianna patted her hair, frowning, then pulled off the ribbon and began to comb her fingers slowly through it, undoing the tangles as preliminary to brushing it. What difference does it make?

Roger and Jamie exchanged a brief but eloquent glance. Jamie shrugged, pulled Jem down into his lap.

Well. Roger rubbed his chin, trying to think how to explain two centuries of Scottish religious intolerance in any way that would make sense to an American of the twentieth century.

    ***************************************************

Here Jamie had asked Roger to collect new tenants from Cross Creek with Tom Christie, for the new people are Protestants and Jamies faith might cause resentment among the group.
I enjoyed the wordless exchange of thoughts between Roger and Jamie. Rogers knowledge of the past helps, but here theyre sharing a friendship and understanding, leaving even Bree baffled.

I really would have liked to add the quote where Jamie tells how Roger Mac describes the future to him, like hes met a particularly evil minded fortune teller. But it's rather negative, and I wanted to stress the positive relationship the men share.

Thank you all for the responses and ideas, Ive enjoyed your comments and insightful opinions. Its been great to search the quotes and even better to see how youve commented them.

Undoing the twist of paper, he found himself holding a large brooch in the shape of a bunch of flowers, done in garnets and silver. It was a good piece of workmanship, but rather ugly. Its impression on Forbes, though, was substantial.

You wouldnt. He wouldnt. The lawyer was staring at the brooch in Rogers hand, his heavy face gone pale.

Oh, I expect he would, if ye mean Uncle Jamie, Ian Murray said. Hes fond of his daughter, aye.

Nonsense. The lawyer was making a game attempt to bluff it out, but he couldnt keep his eyes off the brooch. Fraser is a gentleman.

Hes a Highlander, Roger said brutally.

    ****************
Now Roger is in a team with Jamie and Ian to get Brianna back. In my mind this balances everything that happened as Jamie and Roger first met. He's along despite his open religiousness and doesn't question Jamie's methods.

"She'd marry the lad if he were a Hottentot," Jamie interruptd. "Anyone can see that. And I canna say I'd object overmuch to wee Roger if he were a Hottentot," he added rather to my surprise.

    "You wouldn't?"

Jamie shrugged, and stepped over the tiny creek to my side, wiping wet hands on the end of his plaid.

"He's a braw lad, and he's kind. He's taken the wean as his own and said no word to the lass about it. It's no more than a man should do‒but not every man would.

    ************
This I need to open a bit. The logical step is to seek Jamie's acceptance for Roger and first I thought of the big Clan Gathering as Jamie calls Roger the Son of his House, but that's also a show, and Jamie knew that having manipulated the Gathering at Leoch to save his life.

Then I thought of how Jamie asked Roger to help to raise the troops for militia, which was very important for Roger.

But here Jamie reveals his true mind to Claire, his soulmate, what he really sees in Roger. A father and a husband for his grandson and his daughter. This he values over any abilities or properties.

I have a question: I was rereading ABOSAA (again) and I noticed that Jamie/Claire are talking to Farquard Campbells wife (Rachel) at Fionas party, YET, IIRC in TFC, Claire was given a piece of paper to seal Mortons hole in his lung wound (from Neil Forbesmisprinted Gerald) and from that paper she deduced that Neil Forbes was writing to his lover (Valencia) and the only Valencia she knew was the wife of Farquard CampbellThereby deciding that he was not a (sodomite), But Farquard Campbells Wifes Lover!! Did I miss something along the way??? What happened to Valencia and why is Farquard Campbell married to a woman 35 years his younger???

The flame of Briannas head moved slightly, looking from one to other, and I saw what she saw; the echo of Jamies dangerous stillness in Roger.

It was both unexpected and shocking; I had never seen any resemblance between them at all‒and yet at the moment they might have been day and dark, images of fire and night, each mirroring the other.

MacKenzie, I thought suddenly. Viking beasts, bloody minded and big.

I didn't think of this as a spoiler, since it's the book's description on the publisher's own site. However be sure to put anything related to it inside a reply out of respect to the pristine eyes of our Spoiler Phobic Hosers. *G*

Did ye no? Well, and perhaps ye dinna ken her so well as all that, he said. Pleasantly enough, but with a jeering undertone that would make one sort of man go for his throat.

MacKenzie wasnt that sort. He sat up straight, and drew a deep breath.

The following quote is taken from A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 29 Perfectly Fine, 2005 Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

I have lived through a fucking world war, I said, my voice low and venomous. I have lost a child. I have lost two husbands. I have starved with an army, been beaten and wounded, been patronized, betrayed, imprisoned, and attacked. And I have fucking survived! My voice was rising, but I was helpless to stop it. And now should I be shattered because some wretched, pathetic excuses for men stuck their nasty appendages between my legs and wiggled them?! I stood up, seized the edge of the washstand and heaved it over, sending everything flying with a crash-- basin, ewer, and lighted candlestick, which promptly went out.
Well, I wont, I said quite calmly.

I have had such fun this week with these quotes. I dont share many characteristics with Claire, but we both have a tendency to use some not so nice words more frequently than we should. There are so many great examples in the books; it was really hard to narrow the list to seven. I have to give a shout out to Leah and Janie who helped me come up with the theme. Thanks ladies!

"You'll be MacKenzie," the man said. It wasn't a question. The voice was deep but not loud, barely lifted above the sound of the rustling leaves, but Roger had no difficulty hearing him.

    "I am," he said, taking a step forward. "And you'll be . . . ah . . . Jamie Fraser?"

He stretched out a hand, but quickly let it drop. Two pairs of eyes rested coldly on him.

"I am," said the red-haired man. "You'll know me?" The tone of the question was distinctly unfriendly.

I finally got my DSISIL to read Outlander. I love her dearly but she has a tendency to find fault with everything. She liked the book but one of her complaints is that Claire used the expression "over the top". She feels that this is too modern for her to say. I don't remember reading this. Does anyone else remember this?

"I've done wrong to ye, MacKenzie, as ye'll know. I've come to put it right, so far as may be, but it may be as I'll not have the chance." He gestured briefly toward the door.

"For now, you've my apology. For what satisfaction ye want of me later‒I'll bide your will. But I'd ask ye to let it wait until we're safe out of this."

Roger stared at him for a moment. Satisfaction for the last months of torment and uncertainty seemed as farfetched a notion as the thought of safety. He nodded.
