When discussing the books please keep a few guidelines in mind. Thank you.

PLEASE NOTE - PLEASE NOTE - PLEASE NOTE!
Be forewarned that the book discussions encompass Diana's PUBLISHED BOOKS!
If you have not yet read the first 7 novels, The Companion/Through The Stones,
ALL the Lord John books (as of the end of 2007), or her short stories,
chances are you are going to encounter messages and/or QOTD passages that will contain "spoilers" in them.
And if you HAVE read the 7 main books but NOT the Companion/Through The Stones,
you may encounter two spoilers if they are ever quoted from - Part 11: Works in Progress.

Excerpts from Diana's unpublished works:

Discussions regarding Diana's "in progress" works are NOT posted here. Vicki has set up a board exclusively for the discussion of unpublished excerpts and you can find it here: Excerpt board, so please visit there for all the spoiler discussions you can possibly ever want! Thank you. (But it is ok to post notices here when there is a new excerpt to keep us informed.)

For those who are interested in reading some of Herself's thoughts in her own words,
here is a link to her folder at the Books and Writers Community at: Compuserve. You do not need to register to read the messages. Be aware that it is possible that you may come across spoilers.

Herself also has a blog. You can read and comment, if you'd like, at: Diana Gabaldon's Blog.

To catch up on recorded interviews and/or appearances by our favorite author, check out her YouTube channel by clicking: Voyagesoftheartemis' Channel.

The message boards at LOL are for those 18 years of age and older. While we cannot monitor the boards, we expect people to honour this request because you are people of integrity. If you have any questions about WHY there is an age restriction, please click on "Contact forum admin" link above and send an e-mail. Thank you!

He put an arm round my waist and swung me off my feet, turning round so that his back was to the house, screening me with his body. His long fingers deftly ruffled up the skirt of my gown, then the two petticoats beneath, and even more deftly, slid between my bare legs.

“Hush,” he murmured in my ears. “Ye dinna want folk to hear, do ye?”

If this is the wrong board for this, mods, please feel free to move it. I had a LOT of extra "think" time on my hands at work today and found myself wondering about the characters and their predominate traits...Claire's compassionate ruthlessness, elder Ian's humor, Roger's loyalty, Jamie's sense of responsibility, Bree's desire to both please her parents and forge her own path, Lord John's wit, and wondering who I was most like.

Who do you reflect the most? Not necessarily your favorite, but the one most like you?

  • New cover art for the Lord John books! -- Karen Henry, 16:25:58 03/29/12 Thu
Random House, Diana's US publisher, released the new cover art for BOTB today. And Diana posted pictures of the new covers for PRIVATE MATTER and HAND OF DEVILS on Compuserve.

The new covers are beautiful, much better than the "eyes", and they will make a great matched set with SCOTTISH PRISONER.

Details, including links to the pictures, are on my blog here.

One thought of bodies under bushes, and his mind had presented him with a blindingly indecent vision of Claire, lying sprawled and laughing under one, breasts falling out of her gown and the dead leaves and dry grass the same colors as her rumpled skirts and the curly brown hair between her – He choked the thought off abruptly, bowing cordially to old Mrs. Alderdyce, the Judge’s mother.

    “Your servant, ma’am.”

My eyes popped open a few moments later.

“Don’t stop!” I said, disbelieving. “Not now, for God’s sake!”

He grinned down at me, stepping back and letting his kilt fall in to place. His face was flushed a ruddy bronze with effort, and his chest heaved under his shirt ruffles.

He grinned maliciously, and wiped a sleeve across his forehead.

“I’ll gie ye the rest when I’m ninety-six, aye?”

It wasn’t only the birds, I thought, amused. A certain sense of rising sap suffused the whole gathering. Glancing up at the terrace, I could see young women clustered, tittering and gossiping in small groups like hens, while the men strode oh-so-casually up and down in front of them, gaudy as peacocks in their party clothes. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least a few engagements resulted from this celebration – and a few pregnancies as well. Sex was in the air; I could smell it, under the heady fragrances of spring flowers and cooking food.

The sense of melancholy had quit left me, though I still had a strong urge to find Jamie.

“Good,” Jamie said, in tones of satisfaction. “We’ve a priest, then, and a bride. Two of three – that’s progress. Here, Sassenach, wait a bit – your hair’s coming down.” He traced the line of a fallen curl slowly down my back, and I obligingly let the shawl fall back from my shoulders.

Jamie put up the curl again, with a skill born of long practice, then kissed me gently on the nape of the neck, making my shiver. He wasn’t immune to the prevailing airs of spring, either.

“Why, Mrs. Fraser.” A light voice broke in on my thoughts, and I looked round to find Phillip Wylie at my elbow. “Whatever can you be thinking, my dear? You look positively…feral.” He took my hand and lowered his voice, baring his own fairly decent teeth in a suggestive smile.

“I am not your dear.” I said with some acerbity, jerking my hand out of his. “And as for feral, I’m surprised no one has bitten you in the backside yet.”

"Do that again," he whispered in her ear. "Make that noise again for me."

She made a better one, one he'd never heard before, and jerked under him, quivering and whimpering.

He pulled out the finger and guddled her, light and quick, all along the slick deep parts, feeling his own cock under his fingers, big and slippery, stretching her ...

He made a terrible noise himself-like a dying cow-but was too happy to be shamed.

"Ye're no verra peaceful, Sassenach," he murmured a moment later, breathing in the smell of musk and new life. "But I like ye fine."

"It's a great comfort," he said at last, "to see the sun come up and go down. When I dwelt in the cave, when I was in prison, it gave me hope, to see the light come and go, and know that the world went about its business."

He was looking out the window, toward the blue distance where the sky darkened toward infinity. His throat moved a little as he swallowed.

"It gives me the same feeling, Sassenach," he said, "to hear ye rustling about in your surgery, rattling things and swearin' to yourself." He turned his head, then, to look at me, and his eyes held the depths of the coming night.

"If ye were no longer there - or somewhere -" he said very softly, "then the sun would no longer come up or go down." He lifted my hand and kissed it, very gently.

We had known each other only a few months since my return. Each touch, each word was still at once tinged with memory and new with rediscovery. What would happen when we were thoroughly accustomed to each other, living day by day in a routine of mundane tasks?

"Will ye grow tired of me, do ye think?" he murmured. "Once we're settled?"

"I was wondering the same thing about you."

"No," he said, and I could hear the smile in his voice. "That I willna, Sassenach."

"How do you know?" I asked.

"I didn't," he pointed out. "Before. We were wed three years, and I wanted ye as much on the last day as the first. More, maybe." he added...

The corner of his mouth twitched slightly as he looked at me. I could see the pulse beat strong in the hollow of his throat, his skin flushed with wind and desire.

"There are moments, Sassenach, when for one copper penny, I'd have ye on the spot, back against the mast and your skirts about your waist, and devil take the bloody crew!"

    Hi everyone,
I have a question from Drums of Autumn.... When Roger and Brianna are deciding what to name the baby, they discuss the name Jeremiah, or Jemmy. Roger remembers the baby from the Gloriana and asks Claire what was "the name of the changeling's wife". She responds that it was Morag, who was the woman he helped on the ship with the sick baby. Who was Jemmy? The baby's father? Didn't the changeling die and was replaced by Duncan's son, William Buckleigh? I am confused...

My eyes were so full of tears that I couldn't see his face clearly; couldn't see if he wept as well. His arms went tight around me and the damp heat of him engulfed me like the breath of a monsoon.

"Claire, ye do kill me, knife or no," he whispered, face buried in my hair.

He bent and picked me up, carrying me to the bed. He sank to his knees, laying me amid the rumpled quilts.

"You'll lie wi' me now," he said quietly. "And I shall use ye as I must. And if you'll have your revenge for it, then take it and welcome, for my soul is yours, in all the black corners of it."

  • re-reading ABSOAA, I'm where Richard Brown and the Fisher-folk march Jamie and Claire off to 'trial' for Malva's murder. The only person who acted to save them was Tom Christie. I find this one of the most disturbing events in all the books. The Presbyters had been given land, food, taught new skills, ministered to by Roger and Claire, but they turned against a man they knew from their personal experience to be honorable. I find it chilling. This has happened throughout history at time of war and still is happening today Bosnia, Sunni-Shia. It breaks my heart, or maybe it hardens my heart.       ”But you’re a priest, Reg, if not a Catholic—and more importantly,
you’re my friend. You needn’t reply to this; I don’t suppose
a reply is possible. But you can listen. One of your great gifts,
listening. Had I told you that before?
I’m delaying, though I don’t know why I should. Best have it
    out.
You’ll recall the favor I asked you a few years ago—about the
gravestones at St. Kilda’s? Kind friend that you are, you never
asked, but it’s time I should tell you why.

  • OUTLANDER Around the World -- Karen Henry, 16:03:12 03/08/12 Thu
Here's something special that I've been working on for the past couple of weeks:

    OUTLANDER Around the World

This is an interactive map that shows all the countries where Diana's books have been published, along with the OUTLANDER or CROSS STITCH covers for each country. It was a fun project and I hope you enjoy it!

Many thanks to Susan Leidy, aka "Sooz", for the idea, and to Carmen for letting me use the pictures from her cover gallery.

Please try it out and let me know what you think!

””A-hem,” said a loud voice near Brianna’s elbow. She swung
away from Roger, revealing Gayle, who smiled angelically up at
him under blond bangs, and waved like a child going bye-bye.
”Hell-ooo,” she said. “You must be Roger, because if you’re
not, Roger’s sure in for a shock when he shows up, isn’t he?”
She looked him up and down with obvious approval.
”All that, and you play the guitar, too?”
Brianna hadn’t even noticed the case he had dropped. He
stooped and picked it up, swinging it over his shoulder.
”Well, that’s my bread and butter, this trip.” He said. With a
smile at Gayle, who clutched a hand to her heart in simulated ecstasy.”

" "Before. We were wed three years,
and I wanted ye as much on the last day as the first. More,
maybe," he added softly, thinking, as I was, of the last time we
had made love before he sent me through the stones.
I leaned down and kissed him. He tasted clean and fresh, faintly
scented with the pungency of sex.
      "I did too."
"Then dinna trouble yourself about it, Sassenach, and neither
will I." He stroked my hair, smoothing damp curls off my fore-
head. "I could know ye all my life, I think, and always love you." "

" "Oh, aye, we're familiar," Jamie said, laughing. "Ian's father was the factor
for Lallybroch, like Ian is now. On a number of occasions during my reckless
youth, I've found myself standing elbow to elbow with Mr. Murray there,
explaining to one or other of our respective fathers how appearances can be
deceiving, or failing that, why circumstances alter cases."
"And failin' that," said Ian, "I've found myself on the same number of
occasions, bent over a fence rail alongside Mr. Fraser there, listenin' to him yell
his heid off while waitin' for my own turn."
"Never!" replied Jamie indignantly. "I never yelled."
"Ye call it what ye like, Jamie," his friend answered, "but ye were awful loud." "

""May I introduce my husband?" I turned to wave at Jamie, who had been
detained in animated conversation with the admiral, but who was now ad-
vancing toward us, accompanied by Mr. Willoughby.
I turned back to find the Governor gone green as a gooseberry. He stared
from Jamie to me, and back again, pale as though confronted by twin specters.
Jamie came to a stop beside me, and inclined his head graciously toward
    the Governor.
"John," he said softly. "It's good to see ye, man."
The Governor's mouth opened and shut without making a sound.
"Let us make an opportunity to speak, a bit later," Jamie murmured."

""No," I assured him. "A sexist male chauvinist answer is basically what I
    want."
"Oh, okay. As long as we're straight, then." He resumed his perusal,
squinting closely as I stood up straight.
"Skinny white broad with too much hair, but a great ass," he said at last.
"Nice tits, too," he added, with a cordial nod. "That what you want to
    know?"
"Yes," I said, relaxing my rigid posture. "That's exactly what I wanted to
know. It isn't the sort of question you can ask just anybody."
He pursed his lips in a silent whistle, then threw back his head and roared
    with delight.
"Lady Jane! You've got you a man!" "

I have a question about your cover gallery. I posted a message to you on Compuserve today, but I wasn't sure if you check that site very often. I have an idea for a project that involves your cover gallery. Please email me at Karen.L.Henry@gmail.com and I'll send you more details.

    Thanks,

The following quote is taken from A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 124, Property Of The King. Copyright (c) 2005 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

“Ye can at least promise me the victory,” he said, but his voice held the whisper of a question. “Yes,” I said, and touched his face. I sounded choked, and my vision blurred. “Yes, I can promise that. This time.” No mention made of what that promise spared, of the things I could not guarantee. Not life, not safety, not home, nor family; not law or legacy. Just the one thing—or maybe two. “The victory,” I said. “And that I will be with you ‘til the end.”

He closed his eyes for a moment. Snowflakes pelted down, melting as they struck his face, sticking for an instant, white on his lashes. Then he opened his eyes and looked at me. “That is enough,” he said softly. “I ask no more.”

He reached forward then and took me in his arms, held me close for a moment, the breath of snow and ashes cold around us.”

  • Ladies - I need your help! -- Catho, 04:18:19 02/28/12 Tue
I belong to the local Scottish Heritage Society and the March program is going to be about Scottish books. I've been asked to give a short talk on some of my favorites and I'd like to include Outlander.

How would you summarize it? What points should I be sure to include?

I thought I'd read a couple passages - maybe the very beginning (the "People disappear all the time" section) and something else. Any suggestions for a second passage?

    Thanks for your help!

“Will I take ye, then?” he said softly. “D’ye want it, truly?” One hand caressed my arm; the other went downward, starting the slow, steady rhythm to ready himself.

“Let me,” I whispered, stilling his hand with my own. “Lie still.”

I made love to him at first like a sneak thief, hasty strokes and tiny kisses, stealing scent and touch and warmth and salty taste. Then he put a hand on the back of my neck, pressing me closer, deeper.
“Dinna hurry yourself, lass,” he said in a hoarse whisper. “I’m no going anywhere.”
