Here we have the Quote of the Day and book discussions.

Please click HERE to learn more about Quote of the Day.

When discussing the books please keep a few guidelines in mind. Thank you.

Just for fun - click HERE to read the Flame Warriors Guide. If you recognize yourself here it's probably time to take stock of things. :D ~ Judie

PLEASE NOTE - PLEASE NOTE - PLEASE NOTE!
Be forewarned that the book discussions encompass Diana's PUBLISHED BOOKS!
If you have not yet read the first 6 novels, The Companion/Through The Stones,
ALL the Lord John books (as of the end of 2007), or her short stories,
chances are you are going to encounter messages and/or QOTD passages that will contain "spoilers" in them.
And if you HAVE read the 6 main books but NOT the Companion/Through The Stones,
you may encounter two spoilers if they are ever quoted from - Part 11: Works in Progress.

Excerpts from Diana's unpublished works:

Discussions regarding Diana's "in progress" works are NOT posted here. Vicki has set up a board exclusively for the discussion of unpublished excerpts and you can find it here: Excerpt board, so please visit there for all the spoiler discussions you can possibly ever want! Thank you. (But it is ok to post notices here when there is a new excerpt to keep us informed.)

For those who are interested in reading some of Herself's thoughts in her own words,
here is a link to her folder at the Books and Writers Community at: Compuserve. You do not need to register to read the messages. Be aware that it is possible that you may come across spoilers.

Herself also has a blog. You can read and comment, if you'd like, at: Voyages of the Artemis.

To catch up on recorded interviews and/or appearances by our favorite author, check out her YouTube channel by clicking: Voyagesoftheartemis' Channel.

The message boards at LOL are for those 18 years of age and older. While we cannot monitor the boards, we expect people to honour this request because you are people of integrity. If you have any questions about WHY there is an age restriction, please click on "Contact forum admin" link above and send an e-mail. Thank you!

  • Quote of the Day for Thursday August 6, 2009 -- RisaB, 19:08:34 08/05/09 Wed
The following quote is taken from Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 50 In Which All Is Revealed, © 1997 Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

Bree left me, and walked quietly around the table, across the room, around Jamie. She stood in front of him, looking up into his face, her own set like marble, cold as a saint’s.
“Damn you,” she said, scarcely audible. “Damn you very much, you bastard. I’m sorry I ever saw you.”

I’ve had a blast reading your comments so far this week. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts about this one; Bree is just as much her mother’s child as she is her father’s.

  • Quote of the Day for Wednesday August 5, 2009 -- RisaB, 19:47:36 08/04/09 Tue
The following quote is taken from Voyager by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 34 Daddy, © 1994 Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

I didn’t feel him rip my gown, but I felt the heat of his body on my bare breasts, through the thin linen of his shirt, the long, hard muscle of his thigh straining against my own. He took his hand off my arm to tear at his breeches, and I clawed him from ear to breast, striping his skin with pale red.
We were doing our level best to kill each other, fueled by the rage of years apart – mine for his sending me away, his for my going, mine for Laoghaire, his for Frank.
    “Bitch!” he panted. “Whore!”
“Damn you!” I got a hand in his own long hair, and yanked, pulling his face down to me again. We rolled off the bed and landed on the floor in a tangled heap, rolling to and from in a welter of half-uttered curses and broken words.

The following quote is taken from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 1 A New Beginning, © 1991 Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

Dropping the teapot was a perfectly normal reaction. Dropping it into Mr. Bainbridge’s lap was merely an accident of placement; I had to drop it somewhere. It was my exclaiming “Bloody fucking hell!” in a voice that topped Mr. Bainbridge’s heartcry that had made Frank glare at me across the scones.
Once he recovered from the shock, Mr. Bainbridge had been quite gallant, fussing about my hand and ignoring Frank’s attempts to excuse my language on grounds that I had been stationed in a field hospital for the better part of two years. “I’m afraid my wife picked up a number of, er, colorful expressions from the Yanks and such,” Frank offered, with a nervous smile.

The following quote is taken from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 23 Return to Leoch, © 1991 Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

    “What does “fucking” mean?”
My surprise must have shown plainly, for he said irritably, “If ye must call me names, that’s one thing. But I dinna care to be called things I can’t answer. I know it’s a damn filthy word, from the way ye said it, but what does it mean?”
Taken off guard, I laughed, a little shakily. “It . . . it means . . . what you were about to do to me.”
One brow lifted, and he looked sourly amused. “Oh, swiving? Then I was right; it is a damn filthy word. And what’s a sadist? Ye called me that the other day.”
I suppressed the urge to laugh. “It’s, er, it’s a person who . . . who, er, gets sexual pleasure from hurting someone.” My face was crimsoning, but I couldn’t stop the corners of my mouth from turning up slightly.
Jamie snorted briefly. “Well ye dinna flatter me overmuch,” he said, “but I canna fault your observations.”

The following quote is taken from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 3 The Man in the Wood, © 1991 Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

“Come back here, you . . . oh, you goddamned bloody bastard!” Jamie had moved and the original end had come untied.
There was a moment of shocked silence. “Christ,” said the fat man named Rupert. “I’ve ne’er heard a woman use such language in me life.”
“Then ye’ve ne’er met my auntie Grisel,” said another voice, to laughter.
“Your husband should tan ye, woman,” said an austere voice from the blackness under a tree. “St. Paul says, ‘Let a woman be silent, and ---‘”
“You can mind your own bloody business,” I snarled, sweat dripping behind my ears, “and so can St. Paul.”

  • Shocking Moments -- Kathy, 18:17:06 07/30/09 Thu
One of the words Diana's editor used to describe ECHO is "shocking." It got me thinking about all the "shocking" moments that have been in the books so far. I think the most shocking moment for me was when Brianna and Roger opened the box in ABOSAA and found Jamie's cherrywood snake. I literally gasped and found myself with my mouth hanging open when I first read that. I'd love to know - what is the event you find to be most shocking in the books?

  • Favorite books in the series -- Penna. Dreamer, 06:45:55 07/31/09 Fri
    Hi everyone,
I just slipped over here from the Welcome Board. I asked everyone which books are their favorites in the Outlander series. They suggested I ask that question on this board. My favorites are Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and Drums of Autumn. My daughter differs on her favorites, so I'm wondering if you have favorites, and which books they are. I really enjoy Bree and Roger with their modern interjections and thoughts, so I am anxiously awaiting Echo!

The following quote is taken from Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 63, Forgiveness. Copyright (c) 1997 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

    "She heaved a huge sigh.
"Then my father died, and... we found out that Jamie Fraser was still alive. My mother went to join him, and then I came. And- it was different. I saw how they looked at each other. I never saw her look at Frank Randall that way- or him at her."
" Ah yes." A small gust of bleakness swept through him. He'd seen that look once or twice; the first time he had wanted desperately to put a knife through Claire Randall's heart."

Thank you all for allowing me to participate in QOTD. I have enjoyed it greatly. Sorry this posting is a little early.

  • GABALDON CONTEST ALERT!!! -- Cathryn_L, 10:40:16 07/27/09 Mon
I posted this on the SB too, but thought it should go here too.

I just happened to visit DG's site, & there's a new contest there, open thru end of the month. The publisher will randomly pick 100 people to receive 24 free copies of Outlander to pass out to others (it has a new cover too!). Also, they'll draw 20 people to receive A FREE PRE-PUBLICATION COPY OF ECHO!!! It says 1 entry per person, so good luck everyone! If any Lallyfriends win, be sure to let us know, so we can rejoice with you!

So, do you think that makes the 100 free O book winners Gabaldon Missionaries--spreading the word? lol

The following quote is taken from A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 27, The Malting-Floor. Copyright (c) 2005 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

" I knew all the reasons why he said he'd married her-and I believed him. However, the fact remained that the mention of her name conjured up assorted visions- starting with Jamie kissing her ardently in an alcove at Castle Leoch, and ending with him fumbling up her nightgown in the darkness of their marriage bed, hands warm and eager on her thighs- that made me snort like a grampus and feel the blood throb hotly in my temples.
Perhaps, I reflected, I was not really a very high-minded sort of person."

The following quote is taken from Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 27, Trout Fishing In America. Copyright (c) 1997 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

" It wasn't stubborness, nor even loyalty that had made Willie insist on staying at the Ridge. It was love of John Grey, and fear of his loss. And it was the same love that made the boy weep in the night, desperate with worry for his father.
An unaccustomed weed of jealousy sprang up in Jamie's heart, stinging like nettles. He stamped firmly on it; he was fortunate indeed to know that his son enjoyed a loving relationship with his stepfather. There, that was the weed stamped out. The stamping, though, seemed to have left a small bruisd spot on his heart; he could feel it when he breathed."

I love this passage for its pathos and emotional honesty.

  • News from Diana: IT'S DONE!! -- Karen Henry, 01:22:26 07/30/09 Thu
Diana posted this on Compuserve last night:

It's done! Or, as the cover email I sent my editor with the final section this morning (having stayed up all night in the Algonquin Hotel to finish it, and shipped it off just before rushing out the door to the airport) said--"Over to you, Ace--I'm fried." <g>

I am so thrilled for her, and very excited to hear that she's finally finished with the writing!

And if Diana's editor's reaction on reading the last part is any indication ("I finished: thrilling, shocking, surprising, brilliant! Bravo!"), we are in for a real treat on September 22.

If you want to offer your congratulations to Diana, the thread on Compuserve is here:

"What did you think, I'd gone straight back to Frank and lived happy ever after?" I kicked at him as hard as I could. He flinched, but didn't let go.
"Sometimes I hoped ye did," he said, speaking through clenched teeth. "And then sometimes I could see it- him with you, day and night, lyin' with ye, taking your body, holding my child! And God, I could kill ye for it!"

The following quote is taken from Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 53, Blame. Copyright (c) 1997 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

"She said she would gladly see me in hell, and sell her own soul to have her father back- her real father." He swallowed; I heard the sound of it, above the murmur of distant voices.
" I keep thinking he would not have made such a mistake. He would have trusted her; he would have known that she... I keep thinking that Frank Randall was a better man than I am. She thinks so." His hand faltered, then settled on my shoulder, squeezing tight. "I thought...perhaps ye felt the same, Sassenach."
