The following quote is taken from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, chapter 11 "Conversations with a Lawyer". Copyright (c) 1991 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

" He'll do it again?" I said abruptly, unable to stop myself.
He paused before answering, but there was no pretense of not understand-
ing what I meant.
"Oh, aye," he said at last, nodding. "It gets him what he wants, ye see."
"And you'll let him do it? Let him use you that way?"
He looked past me, down the hill toward the tavern, where a single light
still showed through chinks in the timbers. His face was smooth and blank as a
wall.
   "For now." "

[> [> I knew J & C would get together, from the book jacket. What I found, and still find fascinating about this scene is the question of whether or not Dougal had told Jamie, or Jamie sussed out w/o being told in so many words, that D was going to marry him off to Claire. And this is the reason for his forebearance here. And that earlier statement of J's to Auld Alex, "And Colum's promised me to --- Ah, well you'll not know about that." Promised him to whom? We never learned that, did we? (unless the word 'promised' is used here in a different way, i.e. 'promised' him to petition Sandringham to use his influence to pardon Jamie & get BJ off his case.) -- Lemora, 13:21:25 07/31/12 Tue

[> That blank face has served Jamie well - lo, all these many years! (BTW - when I first read Outlander, I didn't know that Jamie and Claire would get together/marry. I usually read book previews but didn't in this case. At this quote, I was still oblivious. Jamie and Claire were just friends. Jamie was still a bit of a mystery to me, just as he was to Claire.) -- LollyS, 11:51:16 07/31/12 Tue

[> [> I was listening to the audio tapes and actually though she would end up with Dougal - especially after he pressed his aroused self against her after the clan gathering. Whoosh! That was a very brief but very HOT scene. -- CathyS, 12:05:35 07/31/12 Tue

[> [> [> [> Lisa, I don't think that scene has ever been used as a hump-day quote. It would be a good one, IMHO. I liked it! -- CathyS, 17:41:01 07/31/12 Tue

[> [> [> I thought that scene was gross --a possible precursor to forceable rape. And by a stinking-drunk man. Not attractive & I disliked him here. Different strokes. -- Lemora, 13:12:15 07/31/12 Tue

[> [> [> [> I thought the scene was good... He desired her.. He let her know that... He tasted her .. Then let her go and sent her away to the safety of her room... Despite his words I didn't see Dougal as a rapist... Sorry we all read it a different way -- Aussiewench, 16:31:09 07/31/12 Tue

[> [> [> [> [> Right. I don't think Dougal would "rape" a woman, drunk or not. "SEDUCE" yes. Being Dougal he can seduce any number of women. NOT ALL!!!! but his bed is not likely to be empty unless he wants it to be. (colum's wife, geeliss???) -- JamesG, 19:14:05 07/31/12 Tue

[> [> [> [> I didn't see it as gross. He let her know he was attracted to her but actually saved her from the unwanted attentions of several other intoxicated men. Had he not appeared, she might have been in danger. As you said, different strokes. LOL -- CathyS, 17:39:04 07/31/12 Tue

[> [> [> [> [> This is true. Also, I just remembered his earlier statement, when Claire is first brought to Dougal by Murtagh, "I don't hold with rape. And anyway, we haven't the time for it." (A practical man, for sure.) -- Lemora, 22:39:05 07/31/12 Tue

[> As an admirer in the Dougal camp, I didn't see the action as a precursor to rape, he was aroused but then protected her by defending her against the drunken wild bunch. -- Florence, 20:40:42 07/31/12 Tue

[> [> I said a POSSIBLE precursor to forceable rape. When I read Outlander for the first time, this is honestly what I thought was going to happen. I didn't trust Dougal, Colum, or Geillis as far as I could throw any of them. My reaction was, "No Claire, don't go down that corridor." I didn't see Dougal as protective, though I suppose now that you all mention it, he was that, sending her down the right corridor to her room and thus signaling --by releasing her-- "Hands Off!" in effect, to the others. -- Lemora, 09:09:44 08/01/12 Wed
