Here we have the Quote of the Day and book discussions.

Please click HERE to learn more about Quote of the Day.

When discussing the books please keep a few guidelines in mind. Thank you.

Just for fun - click HERE to read the Flame Warriors Guide. If you recognize yourself here it's probably time to take stock of things. :D ~ Judie

PLEASE NOTE - PLEASE NOTE - PLEASE NOTE!
Be forewarned that the book discussions encompass Diana's PUBLISHED BOOKS!
If you have not yet read the first 7 novels, The Companion/Through The Stones,
ALL the Lord John books (as of the end of 2007), or her short stories,
chances are you are going to encounter messages and/or QOTD passages that will contain "spoilers" in them.
And if you HAVE read the 7 main books but NOT the Companion/Through The Stones,
you may encounter two spoilers if they are ever quoted from - Part 11: Works in Progress.

Excerpts from Diana's unpublished works:

Discussions regarding Diana's "in progress" works are NOT posted here. Vicki has set up a board exclusively for the discussion of unpublished excerpts and you can find it here: Excerpt board, so please visit there for all the spoiler discussions you can possibly ever want! Thank you. (But it is ok to post notices here when there is a new excerpt to keep us informed.)

For those who are interested in reading some of Herself's thoughts in her own words,
here is a link to her folder at the Books and Writers Community at: Compuserve. You do not need to register to read the messages. Be aware that it is possible that you may come across spoilers.

Herself also has a blog. You can read and comment, if you'd like, at: Diana Gabaldon's Blog.

To catch up on recorded interviews and/or appearances by our favorite author, check out her YouTube channel by clicking: Voyagesoftheartemis' Channel.

The message boards at LOL are for those 18 years of age and older. While we cannot monitor the boards, we expect people to honour this request because you are people of integrity. If you have any questions about WHY there is an age restriction, please click on "Contact forum admin" link above and send an e-mail. Thank you!

  • QOTD for Thursday, July 19, 2012 -- Lady Linda, 17:30:13 07/18/12 Wed
The following quote is taken from The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon, chapter 40, Duncan’s Secret, Copyright © 2001 by Diana Gabaldon, All Rights Reserved.

He put an arm around my waist and swung me off my feet, turning round so that his back was to the house, screening me with his body. His long fingers deftly ruffled up the skirt of my gown, then the two petticoats beneath, and even more deftly, slid between my bare legs.

“Hush,” he murmured in my ear. “Ye dinna want folk to hear, do ye?” He set his teeth gently in the curve of my ear, and proceeded about his business in a workmanlike way, ignoring my intermittent—and admittedly rather feeble—struggles.

I was more than ready and he knew what he was doing. It didn’t take long.

“Actually, it’s your kilt that makes me want to fling you to the floor and commit ravishment,” I told him. “But you don’t look at all bad in your breeks.”

He did laugh then, and bending, kissed me thoroughly, his hands carefully exploring the outlines of my rear, snugly confined in buckskin. He squeezed gently, making me squirm against him.

“Take them off,” he said, pausing for air.

           “But I—”

“Take them off,” he repeated firmly. He stepped back and tugged loose the lacing of his flies. “Ye can put them back on again after, Sassenach, but if there’s flinging and ravishing to be done, it’ll be me that does it, aye?”

“Jamie,” I panted. He pushed his kilt out of the way and pressed my hand against him.

“Bloody Christ,” I said, impressed despite myself. My sense of propriety slipped another notch.

“Fighting gives ye a terrible cockstand, after. Ye want me, do ye no?” he said, pulling back a little to look at me. It seemed pointless to deny it, what with all the evidence at hand. He was as hard as a brass rod against my thigh.

           “Er . . . yes . . . but . . .”

He took a firm grip on my shoulders with both hands.

“Be quiet, Sassenach,” he said with authority. “It isna going to take verra long.”

“Oh, Claire,” he whispered. “Oh, God, Claire.”

And his release began, deep inside me, without his moving, shivering through his body so that his arms trembled, the ruddy hairs quivering in the dim light, and he dropped his head with a sound like a sob, his hair hiding his face as he spilled himself, each jerk and pulse of his flesh between my legs rousing an echo in my own.

When it was over, he held himself over me, still as stone for a long moment. Then, very gently, he lowered himself, pressed his head against mine, and lay as if dead.

I ran toward the opening in the wall, heart in my throat, as he turned back to the doorway, hand on his sword. I stopped, just for a moment, for the last sight of him. He turned his head, caught sight of me, and suddenly he was with me, pushing me hard against the wall in an agony of desperation. He gripped me fiercely to him. I could feel his erection pressing into my stomach and the hilt of his dagger dug into my side.

He spoke hoarsely into my hair. “Once more. I must! But quick!” He pushed me against the wall and I scrabbled up my skirts as he raised his kilts. This was not lovemaking; he took me quickly and powerfully and it was over in seconds.

"She cannot do that! After all, Madame Fraser is not one of the Court ladies - she is a person of virtue!."

"Er, thank you," I said politely. "If you don't mind, though...what precisely, would my state of virtue have to do with my seeing the King to ask for Jamie's release?"

The nun and the singing-master exchanged looks in which horror at my naivete was mingled with a general reluctance to remedy it. At last Mother Hildegarde, braver of the two, bit the bullet.

"If you go alone to ask such a favor from the King, he will expect to lie with you," she said bluntly.

He thought he might be sick on the spot, from sheer terror. Did she have any idea how many lives lay in that manicured white hand? His sister, Ian, their six children, all the tenants and families of Lallybroch, perhaps even the lives of the agents who carried messages and money between Scotland and France, maintaining the precarious existence of the Jacobite exiles there.

He swallowed, once, and then, again before he spoke.

And I recall thinking to myself as I saw ye, Oh, so that’s what electric light is like.”

    I stared at him, open-mouthed.

“How can you recognize something in a dream that you’ve never seen in real life?”

He seemed to find that funny.

“I dream of things I’ve not seen all the time, Sassenach–don’t you?”

He dreamed of Claire that night. She lay in his arms, heavy-limbed and fragrant. She was with child; her belly round and smooth as a muskmelon, her breasts rich and full, the nipples dark as wine, urging him to taste them.

Her hand cupped itself between his legs, and he reached to return the favor, the small, fat softness of her filling his hand, pressing against him as she moved. She rose over him, smiling, her hair falling around her face, and threw her leg across him.

“Were they happy?” I asked at last, very quietly.

“Aye. Brianna and the lad–they had some shadows to their faces, but I could see they were glad nonetheless. They all sat down to eat–Brianna and her lad close together, leaning on each other–and wee Jem stuffed his face wi’ cakes and cream.” He smiled at the picture, teeth a brief gleam in the darkness.

    He shrugged, still frowning.

“Nothing, Sassenach. I saw Jem and the wee lass–“ A smile came over his face at that. “God, she’s a feisty wee baggage! She minds me o’ you, Sassenach."

“No,” he said, sounding half-surprised. “Not at all. I dreamed of her–of our lassie–and the bairns.”

My heart gave an odd little hop, the consequence of startlement and what might almost have been envy.

“You dreamed about Brianna and the children? What happened?”

He smiled, face tranquil and abstracted in the moonlight, as though he still saw some part of the dream before him.

“It is all right,” he said. “They are safe. I saw them in a town–it seemed like Inverness, but it was different, somehow. They walked up the step of a house–Roger Mac was with them,” he added, offhand.

The following quote is taken from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 24, By the Pricking of My Thumbs, (c) 1991 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved. Page 513

He was wide awake, sitting on a stool by the side of the bed, his plaid flung around him for warmth.

“It’s only…well, I dreamed you were lost, and I couldna find ye. It woke me, and…I wanted to look at ye, is all. To fix ye in my mind, to remember while I’m gone. I turned back the quilt; I’m sorry if you were chilled.”

“It’s all right.” The night was cold, and very quiet, as though we were the only two souls in the world.

  • QOTD for Saturday June 16th. -- Helka, 23:43:19 06/15/12 Fri
The following quote is taken from
Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 34, Lallybroch.

There was something else; some current of joy that ran among the
members of the family, unseen but lively as electricity.
She realized only slowly what it was; a remark from Ian brought it into focus.

“We didna think that Jamie would ever have a bairn of his own.
Ian’s smile across the table was warm enough to melt ice.
“You’ll have never seen him, though?”
She shook her head, swallowing the remains of the last bite,
smiling back in spite of her full mouth.
That was it, she thought; they were delighted with her not so much for her sake but for Jamie’s.
They loved him and they were happy not for themselves but for him.

The following quote is taken from Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 27, Trout Fishing in America. Copyright (c) 1997 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

The realization went through him like a sword trust. The boy’s mother was dead.
Not just his real mother, who’d died the same day he was born−but the woman he’d called mother all his life since.
And now his father− or the man he called father, Jamie thought with an unconscious twist of his mouth−was lying sick with that illness that had killed another man before the lad’s eyes no more than days before.

No, it wasn’t fright that made the lad greet by himself in the dark.
It was grief, and Jamie Fraser, who’d lost a mother in childhood himself, ought to have known that from the beginning.

The following quote is taken from Voyager by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 25, House of Joy. Copyright (c) 1994 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

Do it, I thought, in an agony of apprehension. For God’s sake, do it now and don’t be gentle.
    I couldn’t say it.
I saw the need of it on his face, but he couldn’t say it, either; it was both too soon and too late for such words between us.

But we had another language, and my body still recalled it. I pressed my hips against him sharply, grasping his, the curves of his buttocks clenched hard under my hands.
I turned my face upward urgent to be kissed, at the same moment he bent abruptly to kiss me.

The following quote is taken from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 27, The Last Reason. Copyright (c) 1991 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

“I hear you married very quickly.”
Did you wed my brother for his land and money?

“Yes it was quick. I didn’t even know Jamie’s true surname until just before the ceremony.”
I didn’t know he was a laird of this place; I can only have married him for himself.”

And so it went through the morning, a light luncheon, and into the hours of the afternoon, as we exchanged small talk, tidbits of information, opinions, small and hesitant jokes, taking each other’s measure.

    ***
This passage was too long to take along as a whole, but this exchange really did impress me. It was not an easy place to be at Jenny's parlor, but Claire was the person to go through successfully.
As a weaver, I loved the way earlier in this scene DG links Jamie, Jenny and Ian together in a pattern of fabric and how Claire would be a new thread in the pattern.

Suddenly I felt his body tense. He put a hand on my neck, warning me to keep still.
I looked around the campsite, and could see nothing amiss, but I caught the air of tension, running from man to man as though transmitted by wireless.

Looking in Rupert’s direction, I saw him nod frantically as he caught Dougal’s eye, though he went on with the story imperturbably.

  • "I 'squelched' up the path to my wedding." (See "Outlander" discussion below.) -- Lemora, 23:33:41 06/09/12 Sat
I'm reading a biography of Vita Sackville-West. In direct quote from a letter written in about 1930. she writes to her husband, Harold, that the earth in a part of their garden has gone 'soft and squelchy.' So, in her research about English colloquialisms of that era, DG must have come across this usage to describe soft, moistened ground, after a rain. I thought everyone might like to know this. Someone else pointed out the double meaning, that Claire's autonomy and free will were indeed "squelched" in this situation. Interesting.

  • Will there be a Book 9? -- Karen Henry, 06:06:27 06/05/12 Tue
Diana Gabaldon made a couple of Very Interesting comments on Twitter in the last 24 hours.

In reply to someone who asked if there will be a Book 9, Diana said,

"Oh, I'm pretty sure there will be. <g>"

And when I reacted to that, Diana said,

"Well, the book (MOBY, I mean) is starting to Take Shape, to the point that I _almost_ know where it ends. And there's More."

I'm not surprised, but I'm very glad to hear this, as I'm sure many of you are!

I thought those of you who are not on Twitter would want to know. <vbg>  It's not official yet, but it sounds like the prospect of a Book 9 is getting more certain all the time.

I think . . . if he were to see the scars, he couldna see me anymore without thinking of my back. And I’d be able to see him thinking of it, and that would make me remember it, and−“

    He broke off, shrugging.
