Books Board

Here we have the Quote of the Day and book discussions.

Please click HERE to learn more about Quote of the Day.

When discussing the books please keep a few guidelines in mind. Thank you.

Just for fun - click HERE to read the Flame Warriors Guide. If you recognize yourself here it's probably time to take stock of things. :D ~ Judie

PLEASE NOTE - PLEASE NOTE - PLEASE NOTE!
Be forewarned that the book discussions encompass Diana's PUBLISHED BOOKS!
If you have not yet read the first 6 novels, The Companion/Through The Stones,
ALL the Lord John books (as of the end of 2007), or her short stories,
chances are you are going to encounter messages and/or QOTD passages that will contain "spoilers" in them.
And if you HAVE read the 6 main books but NOT the Companion/Through The Stones,
you may encounter two spoilers if they are ever quoted from - Part 11: Works in Progress.

Excerpts from Diana's unpublished works:

Discussions regarding Diana's "in progress" works are NOT posted here. Vicki has set up a board exclusively for the discussion of unpublished excerpts and you can find it here: Excerpt board, so please visit there for all the spoiler discussions you can possibly ever want! Thank you. (But it is ok to post notices here when there is a new excerpt to keep us informed.)

For those who are interested in reading some of Herself's thoughts in her own words,
here is a link to her folder at the Books and Writers Community at: Compuserve. You do not need to register to read the messages. Be aware that it is possible that you may come across spoilers.

Herself also has a blog. You can read and comment, if you'd like, at: Voyages of the Artemis.

To catch up on recorded interviews and/or appearances by our favorite author, check out her YouTube channel by clicking: Voyagesoftheartemis' Channel.

The message boards at LOL are for those 18 years of age and older. While we cannot monitor the boards, we expect people to honour this request because you are people of integrity. If you have any questions about WHY there is an age restriction, please click on "Contact forum admin" link above and send an e-mail. Thank you!

The following quote is taken from The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 46 “Quicksilver”. Copyright© 2001 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

“He turned aside for a moment to set down his glass, a slight shift of his weight enough to effect discreet adjustment of his plaid, glad that he wasn’t wearing tight satin breeks like that fop, Wylie. Indecent, he thought them, and grossly uncomfortable, forbye. Why, a man would be risking slow emasculation in female company, if her were not a natural eunuch – and Wylie clearly wasn’t that, for all his powder and patches. A belted plaid, though, could hide a multitude of sins – or at least, a dirk and pistol – let alone a random cockstand."

“The delightful paradox of having her in drink was that, having abandoned consciousness of him as anything save the agent of her own sensation, she would also cease to guard herself in any way, and thus lay entirely open to him. He might tease and caress, or churn her like butter, leading her through frenzy to gasping limpness beneath him, lying at his mercy.

She was using her fan to good effect, opening her eyes wide over the edge of it, in feigned shock at something that sodomite Forbes had said. He ran the tip of his tongue thoughtfully with the tender margin of his lower lip, tasting sweet silver blood in memory. Mercy? No, he would have none."

“A few glasses more, and her glow would turn to a molten heat. It was early yet, and the real feasting not yet started.

He caught her eye briefly on him, and smiled. He held the goblet by its bowl and his fingers curved round the smooth glass as though it were her breast. She saw, and understood. She lowered her lashes in coquetry to him, and turned back to her conversation, color heightened”.

“Intoxicated, she took less care for him than usual; abandoned and oblivious to all but her own pleasure, she would rake him, bite him – and beg him to serve her so, as well. He loved the feeling of power in it, the tantalizing choice between joining her at once in animal lust, or of holding himself – for a time- in check, so as to drive her at his whim”.

Bedding her could be anything from tenderness to riot, but to take her when she was a bit the worse for drink was always a particular delight”.

His fingers twitched; once he got her alone, he’d take out her pins, one by one, and pile up her hair on her head with his hands, for the pleasure of letting it fall again, loose down her back.”

“What he really wanted was his wife. Early as it was, the sky was already dark, and a sense of reckless festivity was spreading over the house and terrace as the torches flamed high. The air was cold, and with good wine pulsing through his blood, his hands recalled the warm touch of her under her skirt in the grove, soft and succulent as a split peach in his palm, sun-ripe and juicy.

    He wanted her badly”.

The following quote is taken from A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon, chapter 120, “If Ony For Myself”. Copyright (c) 2005 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

Jamie looked down at Jem, who was clinging to his hand, looking back and forth between father and grandfather, confusion, fright, and longing in his face.

“If one day, a bhailach,” Jamie said conversationally, “ye should meet a verra large mouse named Michael – ye’ll tell him your grandsire sends his regards.” He opened his hand, then, letting go, and nodded toward Roger.

Jem stood staring for a moment, then dug in his feet and sprinted toward Roger, sand spurting from under his shoes. He leaped into his father’s arms, clutching him around the neck, and with a final glance backward, Roger turned and stepped behind the stone, and the inside of my head exploded in fire.

I hope that someday Jem gets to see his grandsire again . . .

Thanks for all your comments this week!

The following quote is taken from Voyager by Diana Gabaldon, chapter 16, "Willie". Copyright (c) 1994 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

Willie started for the door, but stopped halfway, suddenly distressed again, with a hand pressed flat to his chest.

“You said to keep this to remember you. But I haven’t got anything for you to remember me by!”

Jamie smiled slightly. His heart was squeezed so tight, he thought he could not draw breath to speak, but he forced the words out.

“Dinna fret yourself,” he said. “I’ll remember ye.”

The following quote is taken from Voyager by Diana Gabaldon, chapter 6, "Being Now Justified by His Blood". Copyright (c) 1994 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

“What I want,” she said quietly, “is to give ye something different. Something less, mayhap, but something ye can use; something to keep ye whole. Your sister and the bairns canna give ye that – but I can.” He heard her draw breath, and the touch on his face lifted away.

“Ye’ve given my my home, my life, and my son. Will ye no let me gi’e ye this small thing in return?”

He felt tears sting his eyelids. The weightless touch moved across his face, wiping the moisture from his eyes, smoothing the roughness of his hair. He lifted his arms, slowly, and reached out. She stepped inside his embrace, as neatly and simply as she had laid the table and the bed.

I’ve always looked at this scene as Mary MacNab helping Jamie to say good-bye to Lallybroch and all the love he has known there. He knows what prison is like, and doesn’t know if he’ll ever feel a warm, comforting touch again.

  • Fraser Plaid -- Alexis, 15:49:06 09/01/09 Tue
    Hi All,

I read all the board descriptions and I THINK this is the appropriate board, but honestly I'm sure.

I'm looking for an accurate description of the Fraser Plaid. I'm listening to the audio book and have heard reference to the hunting plaid as well as the dress. I'd like to start a project and want to ensure I use the correct one! I've visited several tartan sites and found pictures of a few, which differ drastically and just want to check. Can anyone tell me where in the books if anyplace there's a description?

    Thanks

PS I just pre-ordered my Echo... and as always I'm working my way through the books beforehand AGAIN, except for my 16 year old who "GETS" it, the rest of the family thinks I'm nuts. LOL
