• Just an update. My DH didn't get the job he interviewed for. And we didn't get the baby we were hoping for. Somewhere in all this is something good I suppose. I hope I find it. DCS must be involved before anything worse happens (hasn't it been bad enough already?) Having fostered children that were sexually abused, I can tell you it is more devestating than you could ever imagine. Also, please remember, just because she said it didn't happen, doesn't mean that it didn't. Continue to question and encourage her to tell you what is going on there, then call child protective services and get an investigation started. In the past year alone, we've seen many, many cases of what turns out to be continued horrific abuse to children resulting from either concerned people afraid or unsure whether to report suspected issues to DCS as it's called in Massachusetts, or DCS not prolonging an investigation. The situation you've described looks like it has the potential to turn into something very, very serious and it can't hurt but for you to report it. I don't think a 12 year old would want to run away unless there was something very bad going on in the home and sometimes kids just are afraid to talk for fear of being blamed or they've been badly threatened themselves.             • I so agree with WE. My first thought was to call DSS (as they're called in SD) and get them out there. THey can let the kids stay with you--they'll do a background check, etc etc... but they usually prefer to plsce kids with family if at all possible.   Hey everyone. I could use a few hugs and prayers. I am selling my horse that I have had for 7 years. He was the first horse that was "mine". I got him when I was 16, and I trained him myself. I worked two jobs at 16 and saved up to buy him and pay for everything myself (I got him instead of a car). I love him more than anything, but I trained him to be a barrel/gymkhanna horse, and I am now doing reining (a different type of competition). I am selling him mainly because my DH and mine's truck broke down, and we need the money from his sale. I just bought a little 2 year old filly who is not yet trained, but I have only had her for about a week, and yes I love her too, but it is not the same. Baby Boy (my first horse) is only 8 years old, and he is a great trail horse and Pixie, my new baby, already loves him to death. I am really upset right now because I have 2 people who are very interested in Baby. I know that should be a good thing, but I really am going to miss him. If our truck wasn't broken, I would not have to sell him right now, but we need two vehicles. I will miss him dearly, and I just want him to go to a good home if he can't stay with me. He has had foot issues in the past, and has been barefoot pretty much the whole time I have had him, but both of these people want to put shoes on him. I really wish they wouldn't. My DH is pretty adamant about me having to sell him, although we really could pay off the truck loan with a credit card and then trade it in at the dealer. I am also having a hard time right now, because my DH is gone for 2 weeks with the Marine Corps, so I am dealing with all of these people and offers on my own. I was not expecting him to have so much interest so soon, so I was really thinking I would still have him for a while.
  
  Anyway, if you all could just spare a few calming and comforting hugs, along with prayers that he will find the right home, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!!!

  • Thank you all for the prayers and advice. My DH finally called me, and we talked during the little time he had. He will actually be home earlier than expected (this Thursday), so I have told all of the people interested in Baby that I am getting ready for him to come home and that I will call them all next week. It feels good just to have a little time to think it all through. We are going to see if there is a way to make it work out and keep him...we'll see. I will sell him if that is what is best for our family, but I want to make sure there are no other options.   • Is there an option of leasing Baby out. You retain ownership but someone else helps with the feed, vet, farrier bills etc and they get to use and ride him. It is a great option for someone out there that is maybe interested in owning a horse but not sure about the long term commitment. Just a thought. Hope everything works out for you all.   Do you ever feel just tired? Today I am tired of battling with and/or for my kids. They're wonderful and I love them and the battling 'with' is nothing out of the ordinary with parents and kids (so I'm told *g*) but it is exhausting.
  And the battling 'for' (against soccer coaches, teacher/school staff, bullies....) is wearing me down today.
  Ah, well, tomorrow is another day and it will probably all look ok by then :) Like I said, today I'm just tired.

  I'm so proud of how well she's been doing (back at school, paying for herself, made a 95 in the class she just finished), but tonight she and all her coworkers were called into the sandwich shop where she's worked this past year. Due to the recesssion, the store is closing and everyone's laid off, effective now.
  
  This may not turn out to be all bad; she has enough banked to pay her school fees this week and get her books. We're giving her a week's grace on paying us rent. And perhaps she'll find a better-paying job much closer to our new house. Except that she'll have to come down this way to school, traveling 30 miles to a $7/hr job didn't make much sense to me. But without this nudge (well, shove), she wouldn't have gone to look for something new.
  
  So if you wouldn't mind, please say a prayer that she can find another job and continue working her way through school. I'm sure the support from the Kirk will be a great help! Thanks, Lallypals.

  It seems our business trouble have finally found an end. Well actually not an end but a solution. We are not going for bancrupcy (sp?), we will keep the firm (no other way to get the credit) but will keep it down. That means still a lot of stress for my DH but finally, after almost two month of hanging in between, a solution and a path to follow. It will still be a lot of work, but we're seeing a light at the end of this tunnel. (And it ist not a train :))

  My godmother, Ann, has been in hospital for over a month now with cancer. She had a tumour the size of a small watermelon by the time it was diagnosed. (her daughter says she just wouldn't go to the doctor) The prognosis had been up and down...she was pretty bad but then made a turn for the better after the surgery.
  
  I got an email from her daughter Kelly (same age as me...our moms were best friends) today saying the cancer is winning. She also has another infection...and to quote Kelly "She won't be coming home". Ann's brother is flying in from Africa (they live in Alberta) so you know it is very near the end.
  
  Ann and Mike are wonderful people...we spent a lot of my young childhood on vacations with them. We were separated by military postings when we were 10...and I didn't see them again for 9 years when they travelled to my wedding. It's now been 18 years since I've seen any of them but I am devasted for them. Kelly is their only child.
  
  Kelly has said this has brought them closer...which is always good. Kelly also has a 17 year old daughter who is VERY close to her grandparents.
  
  Please keep them in your thoughts? Ann is only 59 years old.

  I want to thank every one of y'all again for all the prayers and thoughts and such very generous gifts you have sent for me and Everett since my beloved Dh Adam's death. I have received a life insurance settlement, but due to many factors, it was almost one hundred thousand dollars less than expected. Also, due to the circumstances of his death, while we will still apply, it is almost a given that I will not be awarded the Accidental Death Insurance money. I am not complaining, we can live off of my Social Security widows benefits, and I have bought some things, including a brand new laptop, den furniture, a "Big Boy Bed" for Everett, some new clothes for both of us, and a "new to me" 2006 Nissan Murano, and then plan to have some necessary work done on our house, pay off my credit cards and student loans, and then allow my lawyer to try to negotiate with all the creditors we were planning to file bankruptcy on and use the money to settle and pay them, and after all that, invest and forget about whatever is left over, so it is there for me when I need it or for Everett if I never do. All in all, the financial aspect of my life is the least of my worries.
  
  Everett is not adjusting well to his "Big Boy Bed", even though it is like a bunk bed in that it is raised about 4 feet off the floor, has a play house/toy storage underneath, and a slide to slide down in the morning. We have screaming fests that can last for up to 3 and 4 HOURS every night. I go thru our same old routine of reading to him then rocking him until he is sleepy but not asleep, but the second I place him in his bed he is wide awake and wants me to lay down with him. I do not want to start that habit, so I TRY to stand and pat his back, but he sits up a million times, then when I finally say goodnight for good and close the door, he gets down and runs out. I put a childproof knob thingy on his door, and he can operate it. I put him back in the bed a million times, to no good. Then, I start yelling because by this time its 10 pm and I have not had a break all day. I finally have to literally hold him down in the bed while he cries, until he gives in and cries himself to sleep after I've left the room, feeling like I need to turn myself in to DFACS for being a horrid mom. Any suggestions??? Single mama-hood is miserable for me, especially since he won't nap most days and with all my health problems. By 8 pm I am ready for bed myself, and I yell in frustration. HELP, PLEASE!!!!
  
  Also, without going into too many details, the dear friend who helped me thru the funeral and visits at least 2 or 3 times a month on the weekends and I have had a huge falling-out and I am heartbroken. Please pray the relationship can be salvaged.
  
  I still cry every day, sometimes 4 or 5 (or 10) times. Nights are long and I am so lonley I cannot put the feeling into words. I was counting on my friend mentioned above to help me clean out the house, but now I don't know who will help me. I DREAD that job. I feel so very alone all the time, with minimal support from either of the families. I just have to go ahead and say it: this sucks @ss. I know I am depressed, as to be expected, but life circumstances seem so much harder to handle when I feel this way. Please just pray for us, as I know you all have been doing since the second I posted all those months ago.

When it started, I stayed in bed with her until she fell asleep, but of course you know how that works out. What we transitioned to is laying in her bed talking for about 5 min or less, then laying quietly, then when I'm sure she's still awake, I tell her, I love you, I'll be in my room, stay in your bed, no more talking, I'll check on you in (5 or 10) minutes. At first she would still be awake when I rechecked, but now I don't even have to recheck, because she's out within minutes & most of the time doesn't get up until morning. It takes a little bit of work at the beginning, but the fight between us has stopped. We're both comforted and she sleeps in her bed. Just the way we do it.   • Will he sleep if you put him back in the crib? I have to admit, that I would be one to lay down with him until he's asleep. I never did do well with all the transition things. My boys were still on the bottle part time until about 18 months or so, and both still had pacifiers in the bed until they were almost 3. And I never pushed potty training. It just wasn't worth the battle for me. Your health and well being are more important than his sleeping in a big bed. You need to do whatever it takes for you to get the rest you need. While I can't advise you on Everett's Big Boy Bed issue as I never had children, I do agree with the advice you've been given herre as it seems logical and caring. I also cannot begin to even imagine your loneliness, but we do have a dear friend who was recently widowed at a young age and he has found great comfort , support, and a measure of friendship in a grief support group. I don't know if this is available in your area or if it's possible for you to attend one (or if you even feel comfortable seeing if this might work for you -- support groups aren't for everyone as I can attest to in my own experience when I was in cancer treatment), but it might be a helpful option for you in coping with your loss and your life going forward.   • My DS had (and still has) a bed like that, he got it when he was 2. At one time, he preferred to sleep on a mattress under the bed, in the "playhouse", he felt safer there. If Everett screams and cries, then it means he's not ready to sleep alone in his new bed. You could put him back in the crib until he asks to be in the big bed again. Good luck, MK, these transitions are often difficult, but he'll make it. Try and listen to what he's telling you by his actions. Is Everett getting some emotional support from outside? A grief counselor for children, or a group or something? I don't know how it works in your country, but here that would be free of charge. As for your friend: maybe it was too much for her?   • I have thought of you often these last few months. I'm so sorry for all you are having to go through. As for Everett and his sleeping I'll give two ideas. One is to do as the ladies have said and abandon the big boy bed for now. Go back to what worked before. But, if you need to keep him in the big boy bed, then use the Super Nanny approach. You'll have a few rough nights to start out with, but it will pay off in the end. We had to do this with our son. Feel free to open a chat room or hit some of us up on IM at night. Those late night chats with hosers got me through many lonely nights while DH was deployed. I know it isn't the same, but it is a connection with adults that I really needed.   • Thinking of you often, MK. My two cents on E -- there have been lots of changes in his life, too. This may be one that he thinks he has some control over. Give it a chance. The most important part is that he stays in his room, not that he sleeps in a big boy bed.     • I agree with everyone else about going back to the crib if possible. If not, you need some kind of safe place for little E so you can get alone time. I had a friend whose child was a real escape artist and she wound up clearing the room of everything but crib, bolting the closet closed and stacking 2 baby gates in the doorway. With regards to the big-boy-bed, I would just QUIT that struggle. Put the crib back into his bedroom, and use that for now. Follow his lead as to when he might be ready to try the big bed again.....maybe try just napping in the big bed for now? Or try reading his story in the big bed at night, then moving to the crib for sleep time? Either way, you don't need this stress right now, so just let go of it - there's really no rush! I am sorry to hear about your friend, I hope it works itself out...I think the suggestion about a counseling group is a good idea to at least check into it, I know my MIL went to one for a while after her 2nd DH passed away. As for your the bed issue, I would see if he is interested to be in the crib again but keep the big bed up too if you have enough room that way he gets used to it. I had both the crib and bed in my daughter's room when she was small - it seemed to make the transition easier. Plus, if she crept into bed with me at night, I let her with a song in my heart. It lasted a little while, but then ended on its own....when she was ready. He will move to the bed when he is ready. And, if you are tired by eight, how about letting him cuddle with you, and watch a kids show or read? That way, you can get some down time, and he can fall asleep with his mommy close by.     • I did have another thought - have you considered hiring a babysitter or asking a friend to look after Everett a couple of times a week? Having a few hours to yourself could really help.   • To each their own, but I don't think it is such a big problem for kids to need some comfort to fall asleep. My son still needs it at 4, and since he has some sensory integration issues, I don't press the issue. I figure it is more important for him to feel loved and secure to follow some instructions in a book. He will be ready soon enough. If it is easier for you, let him fall asleep next to you, or with you in the room, if you want. I really feel that some kids need that, and western culture is the only ones that make kids sleep by themselves anyway. Just my two cents, as his mother you know best.   Last week we welcomed two foster girls into our home--"K" is 12, and "C" is almost 8. Basically things are going OK--a litle jealosy going on in different directions, but generally speaking, all is well.
  
  No permanent jobs yet (DH did get a three-week-long temp job) but we are talking to a church in MT. We'll see what happens.
  
  I still hate my job, but it's been a lot better since MGT1 left. They actualy let me in the photo processing center once in a while, now. I feel so special. One of these days they might move me permanently, but I could be 80 before that happens.
  
  Life is--tight--but it's still liveable. Thanks for listening to all my rants and rages over the last years. I can't believe I' ve been on the boards for over 10 years, now. You ladies and laddies are my best friends!

  After 9 years of pouring my heart and soul into my job and working my way to get where I am, I just found out my position has been eliminated. I haven't a clue how to get through this. The waves of despair keep threatening to crush me as I try to keep a brave face for my daughter's benefit. We'll be ok for a little while, but not knowing what is in store for the long term really scares me. My husband is employed at the same company, and we were all told more layoffs are in the future.   • I know how you feel....It is hard to get out there again and it takes allot of work to find another job. Just set aside 2 hours a day and get your resume as up-to-date and modern as possible. Then post it everywhere, but Job Circle and Career Builder are the best search engines. Let everyone know you are looking and remember that your next job does not have to be a perfect match for what you used to do. Find something else that is close or another aspect of your job you liked and make that the focus for your new search. Experts say it take 18 weeks on average to get another job, so keep the faith.   Just dropping in the thank everyone so much for cards, letters and 'phone calls after the death of my husband. You have no idea how comforting it is to know that friends are thinking of you. Jim had had so many things wrong with him and was in pain as well as the beginnings of dementia and so I can only be thankful that he is no longer suffering. I still have a lot of sorting out to do and endless paperwork but I am getting through it and am looking forward to being back in the 'swing of things' soon.   A month or so ago I posted for prayers and coping vibes for my DS and DBIL. I had said that DBIL was "caught up in" a legal situation. Gayle tactfully summarized it as "a mess of his own making to sort out." The hearing ended up being postponed and, and, and. Long story short, the hearing was finally held earlier this week and, as he truly was "caught up in" the situation, he has been exonerated, charges dropped, etc. etc. Thank you all SO much for your prayers, cyberhugs, vibes and support. My DS said they couldn't have gotten through without it. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you Kirk Friends!

  Today my best girlfriend's beautiful 5 year old daughter was given to her father as primary custodian. Neither household is a bad place for her, but my DGF wanted to change custody from every other week back and forth to a more stable full-time life with her. It went horribly wrong and I have not felt this kind of heartbreak but for a few times in my life.
  
  I am shocked and horrified that the judge took this little girl away from her mother, who is a remarkable parent and has done everything she possibly could to give her daughter a good life (and she's succeeded). I am simply floored at this decision, and the severity of the grief my DGF is suffering rips at my heart. I think her daughter will be devastated... she is such a mama's girl... and I just do not have enough words to describe the shock I feel. DGF's husband is deploying next month as well. Please pray for her. She is suffering so much right now. Please pray for me to be able to give her whatever I can to help her through this difficult time.

  The PE teacher at my boy's school lost her husband unexpectedly (he was just 51 yrs old). She is such a wonderful person and has been such a good influence on my boys. Add to that, her husband was a wonderful man, (was a young coach at my HS when I was there), a devout Christian and a phenominal teacher and coach. The world has lost a wonderful man and his wife has lost a wonderful husband. Prayers for her as she travels this unfamiliar road, and for her sons (about my age) as they learn life without their dad, and for his new granddaughter that will never really know him.

  First of all - sending prayers and blessing to everyone who has posted recently. My heart goes out to all of you.
  
  Secondly - we are finally back from WI. We said goodbye to Noah on Wednesday morning and hit the road. It feels so awful to be home without him but I know he can get the sort of support and treatment he needs there that we can't do for him here. I can't supervise his meals and activities 24/7 and they can. The ED center is very nice and the other residents were welcoming. He'll be there at least a month, more likely two. He says he wants to be home for his birthday which is end of August so we'll hope for that.
  
  Please keep Noah in your prayers as well as everyone else in need here.

• Prayers for a lady that is in my DH's military troop. -- NancyH, 05:19:59 05/29/09 Fri
  The phone rang at 4:20am (never good news) and it was my DH's Chief telling him that one of the ladies that works with them had tried to commit suicide. She was able to call for help though thank God! He didn't have any other information just that she was on the way to the hospital.
  Hopefully she will be okay and able to get help so this doesn't happen again.
  The call really bothered him, he hasn't had to deal with this situation yet being Senior Enlisted. Even though they give you courses about what to do if this ever happens its never good to have to use the information.

  • My DH was able to visit her in the hospital yesterday and said she is doing good, (they transfered her to the military base hospital) She will be there for at least this week we are babysitting her cat much to the dismay of our cat!   This last year things have gone from bad to worse for my lovely ex dh. I've been here before to ask for prayers when he had the heart attack in September but although he seemed to be recovering he's had setback after setback and has since been made redundant with no redundancy pay as the company went bankrupt. He's in danger of losing his house and the stress is making him ill.
  
  I wish I could do something to make all this go away for him but I can't so I'd be really grateful if you'd wrap Al in your prayers tonight, he's one of life's good guys and he can't understand why this is happening to him. I'm so worried for him.

  • OMG Gwen, I so know how you feel. I hope Al can keep it together, tell him to register for job seekers allowance straight away, they will pick up the interest on the mortgage, after 13 weeks, meanwhile talk to the mortgage company and they should allow short payments for a while, or interest only payments - at least those are the options offered to us by Northern Rock. If possible, see if he can take a payment holiday, NR tack that on to the end of the mortgage (we've done that a few times, and especially right now). JSA isn't much, but it is something, and you get free dental, prescriptions and optician costs with it.     • Thanks for the advice Margy, I think what worries me most is this depression he's in, I've made all the suggestions and though he says he's taking it on board i know he's not doing anything. I'm struggling with wanting so badly to help but feeling that he doesn't want help. He's just giving up. Its difficult in my situation because we are not together anymore so there's only so much I can do or say before he makes me feel I'm crossing the line.   My 26th birthday was on Saturday, and DBF and I took advantage of the three day weekend to head out to College Station and look at Texas A&M, which is where he wants to transfer. I wasn't thrilled to spend my birthday weekend scouting out schools 7+ hours away for him to transfer to, but we actually only looked at the school for a half a day, and then we rolled into Austin. After a weekend of very thoughtful gifts, great food, a visit with my college roommate, nature hikes, sleeping late, reading, and floating in a natural cold spring in the middle of the city, I am feeling relaxed and rejuvinated, and very, very blessed. I came home to a spotless apartment and some hillarious gifts from Caitlin, world's greatest cousin/roomie/best friend. (has anyone ever heard of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? I can't wait to read it!)
  
  All in all, running away from my problems didn't solve them, but it sure did help me get a better perspective on things. Thanks for letting me lay my head--I'm ready to head once more into the fray!
