Subject: Prayers and vibes for my Mom please.

My Mom got the news today that a wart-like mole she had removed from her leg 10 days ago is indeed cancerous. I am terrified for her.

My Mom survived a melanoma 30 years ago and has been very careful to keep up with skin exams twice a year ever since.
She's had some precancerous skin spots removed on her face but nothing else in all these years.

This "mole" came up and she knew instantly that it was different since it was the size of a penny and was very tender. The soonest she could get in to see her doctor was 3 weeks. (Small town, only one dermatologist)

I didn't see her until it was one week until the doctor visit but I was stunned to see how bad it looked. I was so glad the doctor appt was in a week.

Day of the appt comes and the doctor is rushed and harried and tells her it's nothing and to make another appt for him to check it in 3 weeks! He told her it was red and irritated because her pants rubbed it when she walked. What!

Well, Mom being Mom, makes the appt 3 weeks away and is going to wait. I pleaded with her to please find another doctor and I'd go with her this time.

She wouldn't come to where I live to see a doctor because she is caring for her elderly sister and my Dad and neither can travel or be left alone. My doc could have seen her within 3 days.

She picked a doctor in another small town and it took 2 weeks to get in. *sigh* Now it has been 10 days since the spot was removed and she just got the results today and the news is not what we wanted to hear.

This doctor can't see her until July 10th to remove more of it!!!!

Am I wrong to panic? Both these doctors know her history with melanoma. I am so upset with these doctors for their carelessness in caring for my Mom.

I'm upset that my Mom is so overwhelmed caring for my aunt and my Dad that she puts herself last and wouldn't come here to see a doctor sooner.

I know this is long and I apologize. I just need to vent and to ask for some prayers and vibes that my Mom will be ok and they can get all the cancer with one more surgery.

Thanks and I love you guys. I feel better knowing all of you care.

[> Marcie - that is just SO wrong to keep your Mom waiting like that! Surely if it was something super urgent, the doctor would have seen your Mom before the 10th July? That's what I'm thinking, anyway - that they're not TOO concerned. Hugs to you - and your Mom is definitely in my thoughts. (((((Marcie and Mom))))) -- Leigh, 04:11:17 06/30/09 Tue

[> Oh you must be so worried, Marcie!!! I tend to think like Leigh, that they're probably very confident to be able to get the whole thing even if they wait until July 10, but I'd still freak if I were you. Could a doctor in your town remove it earlier? If yes, maybe your Dad and you can convince her to have it done there. Sending you lots of vibes! [> (((((((((((((((((((((Marcie's mom and Marcie))))))))))))))))))))) Hugs to you both! Did they say it was melanoma? There are many types of skin cancer, some of which are less to worry about than others. If it is melanoma, I would call every day and ask if there has been a cancellation. If it is not, ask the MD why he thinks it is ok to wait that long. -- Whiskey Eyes, 05:57:34 06/30/09 Tue

[> [> I called the doctor's office this morning to ask some questions, like what kind of cancer it is, can they get her in sooner, etc. The feckin' recptionist was such rude woman and refused to tell me anything (which I understand, but what is with the 'tude...I guess she thinks her job is secure in such a small town doctor's office). I did some research on the interenet and talked to Mom again and we think it is either basal cell carcinoma (probably) or squamous cell skin cancer. Both say they are highly treatable with a 95% cure rate. It's a shame to have to be doing our own research when she is paying a doctor for treatment. Even today she still will not consider coming to where I live to get treatment sooner. Dad is so selfish and only cares that he doesn't want her to be away since someone else would have to take care of him. *sigh* Thanks for the posts. I really appreciate your concern. [> [> [> Lass, if it helps any, I've had 2 basal cells and 1 squamous, both removed successfully, so far! The doc issue stinks. It's so important to be pro-active w/the docs these days.....prayers with your mom! -- CarolE, 14:34:01 06/30/09 Tue

[> (((((((((((Marcie and Mom))))))))) TAke a deep breath, honey.....then go find the pathology report. There are LOTS of different kinds of skin cancer, and many, many, of them do not spread at all. Have your mom (because of privacy regulations, you can't call yourself) call the doc and ask EXACTLY what type of skin cancer it is - and in the removed sample, did the cancerous cells extend to the margins of the lesion? Then either come back here or e-mail me - my e-mail is inside my name....... -- ScarlettO, 13:41:56 06/30/09 Tue

[> [> Thanks Scarlett. My Mom has called today, and got the same rude receptionist. They refuse to let Mom talk to the nurse and said she would get a call back from the office "in a couple of days". Grrrrrr! Sometimes living in a very rural area like my parents do has distinct disadvantages when it comes to healthcare. If a doctor in my town treated someone like that, you could immediately book with someone else and take your records with you. Thanks again for the calming vibes and for the generous offer to email you. (((Scarlett))) -- Marcie, 14:11:05 06/30/09 Tue

[> (((((Marcie and Mum)))), you know I'm thinking of you and sending you calming vibes for a very frustrating situation. I'm not sure what else you can do, other than keep trying. Will pray that the doctor knows what he is doing when he books your Mum an appointment weeks away. Hugs, Lass-hang in there. -- Keira, 15:27:00 06/30/09 Tue

[> ((((((((((((((((((((Marcie, Mom, and family)))))))))))))))))))) Prayers on the way. I had skin cancer removed from my face 17+ years ago. I'd be pretty uptight about waiting, too. Thats the hardest part, IMO. Don't let your imagination run wild - stay calm & keep after the dr.'s office. Don't let mom slip through the cracks. -- Donna Mc, 18:02:24 06/30/09 Tue
