Subject: Prayers for my DH

My DH is a cancer survivor of 14 years. As part of his treatments those many years ago, he received radiation. There was radiation "overspray" which has damaged his kidneys. So now the nephrologist wants DH to prepare for dialysis - getting a fistula in his arm, etc. We are hoping and praying that his filtration number will not continue to go down (it has to reach 15 to be on dialysis, it currently is at 22). He feels fine and has no symptoms of kidney failure (except itching when he eats too much phosphorus). Prayers would be appreciated.

[> ((((((((((((((((((Kathy and DH)))))))))))))))))))) Big hugs to you and your DH and prayers that the numbers will hold. Is peritoneal dialysis an option or has the radiation caused too much scarring? I worked in dialysis in my early nursing career, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask. -- Whiskey Eyes, 11:32:00 06/30/09 Tue

[> [> Yes, peritoneal dialysis (at home) is where he would start, if needed. Doctor just wants him to have the fistula "in case." Thank you so much for the offer of answering questions. I may just have some later. -- Kathy, 15:25:24 06/30/09 Tue

[> It's wonderful that your DH is a 15 year survivor! I will say a prayer that the numbers continue to look good and he doesn't need dialysis. My DH ofter itches all over for no reason. I am going to check out the high phosphorus foods and see where we can do better. (((Kathy's DH and Kathy))) -- Marcie, 13:55:10 06/30/09 Tue

[> [> Hey Marcie, I had the itchies when my Thyroid was high, so in addition to the phosphorous, you might want to have his hormone levels checked. -- Whiskey Eyes, 19:28:50 06/30/09 Tue

[> Kathy and DH, keeping you both in our prayers. Putting a fistula in now will give it time to heal well just in case he does need it. -- Keira, 17:23:29 06/30/09 Tue
