Subject: Need to vent - else I'm choking

We are trying to build a kind of elevated patio/terrace that connects the house with the barn. Unfortunately our estate lies within the boundaries of a zone of historical protectet buildings. The monument preservation office keeps telling us to do things differently since TWO years. We've already worn out THREE architects during the process and spent ALL the money we wanted to invest into that building for those architects. The THIRD building application eventually was agreed on by those idiots - under certain conditions of course! I really had thought, things were straightened out and we can finally get our patio finished and use it this summer. BUT - now come the latest news on it: Today we received a letter from that office, saying the grey color we were to use for the wooden parts of the building was "too dark". I'm on the verge of sending them a bomb!
Just to get the picture: our house is in the very back corner of a little village, whose main street is not even used by the local commuters. We're living near the road to nowhere and the people who actually get to see our house are half a dozen taking their dogs out to poop and three farmers going into the fields behind our backyard (the office claims to preserve our building for the public - except, there IS NO PUBLIC!). I can't think of anything else but aunothorized assumption of authority on their behalf.
This whole thing has already cost me a lot of energy, money and sleepless nights. Now that they seriously want to discuss the "shade of grey" (indeed) I am short of having a fit.
I have always thought that protecting historical buildings is a thing that ought to be done, but, honest - tis is just harrasment!!!
I know there is not really anything to do about things, so I am only asking for calming vibes and words of comfort, maybe.
Thanks for listening - you are the best!

[> ((((Oatcake)))) Calming vibes coming your way. I hate to say this, but, I think all small government agencies are very self-important and want to prove just how powerful they are by making citizens' lives miserable. -- TerriC, 05:51:50 06/22/12 Fri

[> I wish I had a consoling voice on this, but, I am taken aback. I would ask the buggerer when you can expect the tours of your backyard to start? Is there adequate parking for the buses? And, BTW, what reference material did they use to determine the authentic color? I am certain that, historically, homes in the region have been subjected to external modifications. His stance emplies that some standard was enforced. Inside a sec.... -- Dave, 06:33:16 06/22/12 Fri

A a simple coping mechanism, while you maintain your sanity in this conflict, just consider this methods of revenge. Not that you have to act on it.
He's a bureaucrat so he is easy to bury. For $20.00 in stamps, paper, and envelopes you can send a letter a with some inane question that requires extensive research on his part. When he gives you an answer hit him with that 5 year old's trick that drives you bat$hit crazy "why". Or counter him with a different answer and ask him to compare and contrast. Trust me, just because the horse is dead doesn't mean the stick broke. Whack away, whack away. If he keeps up the pace just add a new question or two and put $20.00 in next month's budget.

Prayers for peace and calm. You want this, you go get it. You have them hemmed up so tight they can only argue color. Look back on your victories thus far and gather strength for the coup de grace. Then have a mint julep...and buy a book of stamps
*G*

[> [> Dave, thanks for a laugh I urgently needed! - And for that wonderful strategy! I was thinking about having a judge comit one of those guys to take a walk around our house each day, so the effort makes any sense at all *g* -- Oatcake, 07:08:09 06/22/12 Fri

[> Paint it their colour and get it approved and done - you can perhaps change the colour later? :D -- Judie, 13:11:27 06/22/12 Fri

[> How frustrating! I love Dave's idea of bombarding the city planning department (or whichever department it is that is hassling you) with a shower of paper. How about you send them the book - FIFTY SHADES OF GREY - and let them choose which shade they want. Wait, no, better not. LOL -- Ruthgold18, 13:35:38 06/22/12 Fri

[> [> Oatcake could keep a journal about this whole saga in renovation hell, intersperse the proceedings with S/M sex scenes, title it "Fifty New Shades Of Grey" and have a bestseller. Seriously, I thought stuff like this only happened where I live, with building inspectors on the take, and permits being frivolously denied for no reason at all. I can empathize. -- Lemora, 08:24:36 06/23/12 Sat
