Where do I start...one of my Red Hat Ladies who I saw at breakfast Saturday had a stroke Saturday evening, went into a coma and passed over either last night or early this morning. My BFF's dad is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's and is refusing to eat..they are keeping him comfortable. Another of our RH ladies has been in assisted living for about 3 years with emphysema (refused to quit smoking) and her daughter reports she is "in and out of it". Our RH Queen's 59 year old sister is at end stage brain cancer...I foresee 4 funerals in our future...please send up some comfort prayers for these people and their families...Ginger, Stub, Rosie and MaryAnn's sister. Thanks and as always, even if I don't post, you are all in my thoughts and prayers!

Thank you all for the prayers and good wishes you sent for our son when he had his brain surgery last month. He is doing really well, just about finished with the rehab he needed for weakness in his right hand and some speech trouble. He plans on starting back to work part time the Monday after Thanksgiving. The more we've learned about AVMs the more we realize just how blessed he was with Dr. Coon who performed the surgery and really gave us a miracle. Thank you Betsy G. for the card you sent! If I missed anyone who sent a card, I apolgize, it's because he forgot to tell me. But I really appreciate the support and love here at the Kirk.

Emily W. update: I had posted this summer about Emily who is seven and had relapsed with Leukemia here times. She was the first child to receive T-cells to save her life. She is still in remission 7 months later and doing great in 2nd grade. The doctors are containing to use this treatment on more children, and we've recently heard that a scond child is in remission using this treatment. Last night (wee hours of the morning) my friend Jenny's husband Jeremy was hit by a drunk driver in his own yard. He was pinned under the vehicle for over an hour and received 12 units of blood on the scene and countless more through the day. He is now at Duke in Raleigh and has lost his two lower legs, a thumb, and both femurs are broken as well as both hands and arms.

He is a soldier and has served his country for nearly 20 years. Please remember him in your prayers. I will update when I know more.

- UPDATE: Ok, I have a lot more info. This happened at 10:00 yesterday morning. Jeremy had moved his truck to the street & was just finishing up loading his kayak when this drunk woman slammed into him. He is not out of the woods yet & has another surgery tomorrow. On the positive side they reduced his medication today to allow him to become conscious and he is COHERENT. - UPDATE: Jeremy is conscious and coherent. He has even been making some jokes. He has not yet asked about the extent of his injuries (the amputations) and while it's likely that he knows, no one is to mention it until he does, it's his coping mechanism. He is heavily medicated and will remain so for quite some time, he has a LOT of pain to be managed. He will be having small surgeries pretty much every other day for a while. He has a lot more work that needs to be done on his legs and internally, but his brain is good, his spine is good and overall his spirits are good as well. neurological problem. She had her 7th birthday party on Saturday and does not remember it or the majority of that day. Needless to say, my husband and I are frantically trying to get her in to see a pediatric neurologist as fast as possible. We have already seen her primary care
physician and ruled out head trauma and other external possibilities.

Elana is 7 and has a twin brother, Asher, who is mildly autistic. Please send some answer and healing vibes, and some calming ones to her parents.

To all of those who took the time to offer their thoughts, advice, support, warmth and prayers, I want to thank you. My update to the "new to the kirk" saga is a shift in perspective and sense of confidence that has enabled me to deal with my situation in a healthy manner. I have long forgotten the power of prayer and the solace of a group of people sending support; thank you for helping me to remember it.
I therefore humbly ask for your thoughts and prayers for an uncle of mine who's health, failing for some time now, has taken an abrupt downturn. He's been diagnosed with dementia, thought to be caused by a series of small strokes. Mental capacity of a small child. 24/7 care, kids are taking turns staying with them, and his wife, herself having suffered from a series of nervous breakdowns in recent years, is beside herself. It's similar to what happened to my own father a few years ago. It's very hard to watch this happen someone who's been a pillor of strength in the family for most of one's life. In addition to wishing him the best in his fight to recover, my prayers will go out to his family, who will need strength to get through these difficult days. Thank you all.

I just wanted to let all of you know how much I appreciate the continued prayers and good thoughts for Evan as he goes to Johns Hopkins for pre-op appts.

His Dad, Chris, text to say that they made the flight up there today pretty well. Evan did ok. Whew, we were really worried about that.

Now the round of doctor appts will begin tomorrow to be sure it is all go for the surgery on his spine.

My bestfriend's mom is in the hospital. She lives alone and Cathy found her in the garage. She had been sitting there for two hours in agony. She has been diagnosed with serum sickness and should be able to go home soon. Besides Life Alert, which is a good idea, I once saw an ad for this cell phone for seniors. (mom is cell phone and computer resistant) and this phone was super easy to use with big numbers and I believe emergency contact in it. Does anyone know of it?

- My aunt is elderly and falls often. She has a cell phone but is a luddite and leaves it laying around so it would be useless if she needed to call for help. She wears a Life Alert button on a chain around her neck. When she pushes the button, it calls the company, and they can communicate with her via a speaker phone which activates when they "call" her back. - Both my and DH's grandma had the thingy you wear around the neck. My grandma used it 3 or 4 times over the years. DH's grandma used to put it on her nightstand when she went to bed and one night she got up to go to the bathroom and fell and didn't have it. After that, she took it along when she had to get up at night. I would definitely recommend this compared to a phone. Some of you may remember that my nephew's little son was born with dwarfism and a lot of other health issues. Many of you were so kind and followed his progress through his hospital webpage.

I need to ask for some more prayers and safe vibes for Evan now. He was fortunate enough to meet a wonderful doctor at the Little People convention they went to in TX this summer.
Because his case is unusual he is to have surgery on his back/spine at Johns Hopkins.

The cost will be nothing to the family except to get him there and living expenses while they are there.
Blessedly the costs are being covered by church friends and family.

But the pre-op surgery exam and the trip is suppose to be Nov 6. Just need some prayers that the hurricane Sandy doesn't impact his trip from MS to Baltimore. They decided to drive since Evan probably won't take flying very well.

That little boy is a miracle baby. He spent the first two years of his life in the hospital but has made up for lost time in the most wonderful ways. He is six now and has just last summer learned to walk without his walker, to speak single words and a few sentences.

He goes to big school now on the school bus (with his own aide) and is doing so well.

They have added a little brother, Cooper, and a little sister, Grace, to their family. Evan is the big brother and has adjusted really well.

So please, can you take a moment to send up some prayers and travel vibes and the same that they are able to go ahead with his surgery while he is there so that they don't have to make another trip.

I'm going to put a photo of Evan inside the first reply.

I am so glad to read Evan will be treated there because I truly believe they are among the best in the nation. They have "The Hopkins Way" which encompasses every facet of patient care and there is nothing that won't be done for Evan's healing and comfort. They are wonderful for the family too. We stayed at the Days Inn Inner Harbor for $99 a night because we were Johns Hopkins families. They have a list, but I can vouch for this one - we stayed there three different times over the course of his treatment. There is free shuttle to the hospital. - In the time that I spent with family over the weekend, I heard some heartbreaking things about my nephew. They think that he was contemplating doing something horrible to his ex-wife who left him for a low-life creep. Instead, he chose to stop himself in the only way he knew how. DN was such an incredible person, smart, funny, kind, courteous, caring, always helping his friends who were having a hard time, even paid for his best friend's daughters to go to a good school last year. I didn't realize that he was a victim of depression. If I had a child, no matter what age they were, I'd get the poster with the "warning signs of depression" today and paste it on my wall. I've been consumed by the Outlander and LJG books for the last four years, have been faithful drop-in to the Outlandish Observations blog and most of the links Karen lists for almost the same amount of time (god bless the outlander kitchen!), but have not yet participated in any discussions. Mostly because I'm a bit of a technogorb...not even sure if I'm going to manage to post this message correctly...and have two little kids who leave very little writing time. But today, out of desperation, I have been looking for someplace where I can find support, or advice, or at least an ear, for my situation. Having read a few of the posts here, I think I've found it. What a warm and intelligent group of people.
I think, well, am quite sure, that my marriage is falling apart, and, while I'm still doggedly in denial of this, or at least hope that some miracle will occur, I think I am being naive.
My husband is a wonderful person, glorious really. You know what attracted me to him 16 years ago? Chivilry. Of the kind you don't see anymore. I was in a small town in Guatemala, learning spanish and living with a host family, and met him days before leaving for home (he is from the little town in Guatemala, and therefore guatemalan). Utter magic. I came back a few times over the next few years, and eventually we found a way to bring him home to Canada (secret marriage in Belize), where we stayed for 9 years. In 2007 we came back, with our two year old, and me 7 months pregnant, and have been here ever since. May I inject here, that there are a number of astounding similarities between this place and what is described in the outlander books. Anyway, we've always had a rollercoaster relationship, we're both reactive and passionate, add in cultural and language barriers and it's been a rough ride. But as I said, it was, at one time, pure magic. I think we've held on to that and managed this long because of it.
I'm of german decent, brought up in a fairly emotionally cold family. I'm also a Taurus (born may 1, interestingly enough), thus stubborn, and also a first-born. But mostly I just have a very strong character that I have only recently learned to control somewhat, have been pretty single-minded and selfish over the years. And as for my manners, well, lets just say I pay very close attention to Jamie, Claire, and Lord John...they are just so well behaved! My DH has had a rough go. I think all would have carried on, though, more or less alright, but last year was an election year here (what madness, nothing like living in Canada during an election). And as my BIL was running for mayor (again, third time actually), my DH was very very heavily involved. Which means much more here than being away from home essentially every day all day from May to November, it means financial contribution. Significant financial contribution. My father died in 2010 and left me a substantial inheritance, such a blessing, as it meant we had our "coming back to canada money" - the kids will require a proper education eventually after all, and it is NOT to be found here. So, reason indicates that enough should be left untouched so as to give us a good start. But, how can one say no to one's husband when he asks for thousands and thousands of dollars to help support a financial campaign? One cannot. But wow what a lot of tension it caused. Well it did finally end, BIL won, thank goodness, but the residue of that time, and the ongoing community work as a result of it continues to come out of our (my) pocket - much like Jaimie being required to come up with all those muskets from his own resources...how nice it is to be able to share all this with people who will understand these references...I wonder often at how easygoing Claire is about stuff like that...she must be perfect.
Anyway, I've stopped the "hemoraging" of those precious Canada funds, and it's not gone over well. I guess most couples fight over money, and many marriages end over those differences. This situation has just gotten worse all year long. The chivilry that initially drew me in seems gone now, and I can't help but think that an honorable man would know to manage life on what we earn here, and leave those fund available for the move back, especially since it will in all likelyhood be just me and the kids trying to make it there, his political compromises being what they are now. Now I know I should not compare my DH to Jamie Fraser, not fair, the man is mythical, and carefully constructed, but I cannot help but wonder what Jamie would do if he was in a position to ensure safety and security for Claire and their child...maybe I'm a little too caught up in these books...

- Not to sure on where you want to end up living but here is my two cents worth. That is YOUR money. Tomorrow go to the bank or even a new bank a put it in a savings account in your name alone. Why would you care if BIL gets elected? Let HIM raise his own election funds. In these hard economic times hang on to that money. You will need it. Let your husband rant if he wants. Say no more and refuse to argue about anything. Read that line again. Converse do not argue. Do not explain what the money is for just don't discuss it. Marriages (35 years here) go thru good and bad years and unless he is a beater or a cheater stick together. As you get older and mature your temper should lessen. Learn to listen to other people instead of thinking about what you are going to say next and waiting for them to shut up.         all you need is practice - if you can't go to a latin american country and immerse yourself for a time, maybe find the latin american community where you are and do some volunteer work...like helping new immigrants to settle, or working with kids - those two groups of people tend to have the most patience with someone learning the language. Congrats on the spanish reading though, that's a huge weak point for me. I remember taking one uni couse in spanish lit between visits to Guate when I was still very new to the language, and what a huge difference it made when I got back. I'll bet it would take very little to have you chatting comfortably given the opportunity. I am definately going to look into both the book you mentioned previously, and aquiring and reading spanish language outlander books...it hadn't even occured to me before this - thanks! May I ask for prayers for the family of a work colleague please. John was a lecturer in medieval history in the department where I work. Last week he had what we thought was flu. He took Friday off due to feeling very unwell. On Monday we were told he had been diagnosed with leukemia. This morning my Head of Department called to tell me John had died in the night. John was only in his 40's with a wife and three daughters under the age of 10. His wife nearly died of swine flu a couple of years ago. His little girls almost lost their mother, now their father has gone. Right now the world must seem like a very unfair place to them. It does to me.

John taught me as an undergraduate. He was funny, warm and very informative. Anything I know about the European Reformation and Crusading Europe is down to him. He was always very popular with his students. At Staff-Student Liaison Meetings he was recently referred to as 'a legend' and 'awesome' by his students. Students loved attending his lectures. At staff nights outs he was often one of the last to leave and could always be relied upon to tell a funny story and would have the rest of us laughing our socks off. He was also polite and, in the old fashioned sense of the word, a gentleman. He was a lovely man with a young family and everything to live for.

We're a small department of twelve, so John's death will hit us hard. I can't believe he's gone. He will be missed terribly by us all. However, I can only imagine what his family will have to face over the next weeks, months and years. Can you please send his wife, daughters and parents your prayers to help them find the strength to face life without him.

I have spent the last 45 minutes thinking my FIL was in heaven, my MIL was so upset when she called DH. But is on life support. Please pray for us, I'm not sure what the next few days will bring. - UPDATE----papa suffered a stroke or blood clot. We removed life support this morning and he was gone a short time later. Has anyone here had any personal experience with pilonidal cysts, or know of someone who has? My DS will be having surgery on Wednesday to have this cyst removed, and although we got a lot of info from the surgeon as to what it is and the procedure he will use to remove it (closed flap incision, no open wound, thank God), I'm wondering about how long the recovery period will be. For those of you who don't know anything about these cysts (I didn't), it's a cyst near the tailbone with a number of branching tubes extending from it which, when they reach the surface of the skin, leave an open hole which leaks. I'll spare you the rest of the gory details (I'm not normally squeamish, but this thing makes my wame curdle), but my DS has had numerous outbreaks and abscesses (not to mention the pain) to the point where the whole thing must be surgically removed. Talk about your PITA, right? He's quite anxious about having to have surgery, as one can imagine. I'm more concerned with the recovery period. Anyone familiar with this procedure? And if you could send some get-better-booty vibes his way, I'd be thankful.

- I wish I could remember more detail,but after a year of treatments and baths in epsom salts my brother had the surgery. I think the recovery was minimal, he was just happy to have the PITA over with! All I know is he went into great detail at the time (he's worse than me when he goes off on a rant) and I tuned out after a while.. I can ask him again if you'd like. Best wishes to your DS. - DH had it twice- once in college and once about 16 years later. He felt much better afterwards. I helped with the wound care, changing the packing daily, so it was possibly more upsetting to me than to him. A donut cushion for sitting upon afterwards (heck, before, too) is a good idea. - BTDT, I think I was off work for 2 wks. They didn't stitch mine but left it open. The Docs said it was better to let it heal from the outside in. I don't remember the healing being difficult. Just checking in. Lost my husband of 38 years two years ago today. At the time so many of you provided support and love and it meant so much to me. I am in a much better place now. Went to the cemetery. It was sunny, and all the trees were red, orange and yellow and so peaceful. I have found peace and appreciate that I had 38 great years of marriage.
