  Could you all spare some positive energy toward my DS Dylan? It's like pulling teeth to get him to talk and typically male, just as difficult to get him to do anything he doesn't want to do. He's having some issues at school, mostly stress and I think a little depression. He's agreed to deal with some things this week that are going to be difficult for him.   • Maria, this sounds just like my DS last year. This year is a little better so far. WE dealt with depression and stress. My advice is to keep in close contact with the school. DS was frustrated with the work load, and went into a downward spiral. I am in contact with his teachers now, so I know what he should be working on. Also, is bullying and issue?   • Thank you everyone - he's a sophomore in college and this has just been a hard year for him. He took a summer class he didn't pass, even quit his summer job to dedicate more time to the class, so no job, no money, didn't pass the class (so out THAT money and behind one class for his degree), plus car troubles and his best friend from freshman year was unable to come back for sophomore year so he is also feeling isolated. He's a quiet introverted type of guy (studying mechanical engineering) and has a hard time making new friends and talking to people, so add that all to a couple of difficult classes.......... he's just stuck in a loop. He's going to withdraw from one class to concentrate on the others and hopefully will call counseling tomorrow. He doesn't want to, but he knows it has to be done. I hope this gets him back on track.   A few weeks ago I had posted that my normally fine hair had been falling out for some time and that my doctor had attributed it to a thyroid imbalance. Unfortunately, all my bloodwork and lab results have come back normal, and my hair is STILL falling out. He wants me to see a dermatologist as the next step, as he is unsure as to what the cause may be.

  • Both (Sucralose (Splenda) and Aspartame (Nutrasweet) make my hair fall out. They are in many processed food - even ones that are not marked diet/low calorie/etc. Start reading labels and try cutting them out. Hope it helps. (NT) -- CathyS, 20:55:20 10/17/12 Wed

  • I went through this at 35, all my thyroid test came back normal the first time too. Went to Derma too, then ultra sounds for cancer.... and it was my thyroid, some times its hyper before its hypo and if youre tested inbetween stages it doesnt show.   My DH sees the doctor today at 4pm to discuss the ultrasound findings from last week, doc says he has calcified lumps in his bladder, of course when we googled it bladder cancer came up, so DH is freaking out. I am so worried, but I've been keeping a calm presence for his sake. I told him whatever it takes, we will do it together, and for him to pray! Please pray for him that it's not cancer.

  Thank you to everyone for their compassion and wonderful support. Dave, I have read and reread your post - I know it will be extremely helpful over the coming weeks/months.
  
  Here's what I am wondering about (since it has already started to happen). So far, I have been honest with DH, but have not been pushing too hard (he has been in abit of denial - hoping that the tests are wrong, that a treatment may be found, etc.). While i love my MIL dearly, I know it different for me than for him - there is that step away. How much of a reality check should i give him when he starts saying things like "maybe the liver is only enlarged" or "they say it is 99% confirmed, so they could still be wrong". I have not wanted to come on too strong, since a) I am not a medical professional, just have been listening closely, b) I don't want him to look at me as if I am overly negative and WANT her to die and c) I want to give him this last little bit of protection - I know what is coming soon. Should I tell him or remind him what the doctors have said, or let it pass. The last thing I want to do is cause him extra hurt, either by being too honest or not saying enough and setting him up for even more hurt. To a lesser extent, this applies to his sisters too. I have been very careful there, since emails can come off sounding much harsher that talking in person.

  • Karen, the rest of us are way removed from your situation. From my vantage point, your family, in particular your DH and his sibs, are in the grief process. Google "seven stages of grief." Grief doesn't have to wait for the passing of someone. A dire diagnosis can trigger it. Denial is one of the stages. It is OK and it is normal. He is trying to protect himself emotionally from an inevitable and devastating blow. How can that not be normal? The best you can do is just be there and listen with open arms to comfort him. I don't think you have to agree with him and I don't think your rational and objective self needs to pushback with what.the.doctors.are.really.saying.   • I would stay neutral - don't agree with the DH when he's denying reality, but don't try to argue him out of it, either. Continue to listen closely to the doctors - a notebook will help for the million and one medical terms that are thrown at you. Don't be afraid to ask the doctors to clarify if you're unsure of something. As Joyce said, Kubler-Ross' stages of grief are at work and healthy people go through them, sometimes at a faster or slower pace than family and peers.   • tell doctors you want hospice NOW they can come in if you request them NOW and then they can do some of this counseling! They will bring in social workers to do the counseling and nurses as well. I know I walk with my neighbor a hospice nurse every day. So often they only get there for a few days but the faimilies that have them for months or a year do so much better.   • This is quite common after many neurological injuries. Besides the language issue there can also be poor impulse control in other activities of daily living including eating. I once worked with a patient who had such severe memory impairment/poor impulse control that he ate a whole box of 12 ice cream bars - one after the other and didn't remember any of them until his wife showed him the trash bag full of wrappers. After the first one, the lingering taste made him want ice cream so he had a second one, etc. Funny but sad. My maternity Dr. had a stroke and it affected the part of his brain that caused him to speak crudely about women and sex to everyone.   • I am so sorry to hear your sad story....I can not really give advice. You seem to be very sensitive and observant regarding everybody involved, so I don't think you are in danger of doing anything "wrong". The only thing I could think of is, ask your DH or Chinese friends you might have about traditions concerning the death of a relative. It might help you get a picture of what's to come. I love how you put your MIL first and try to fullfil any wish she might have or support her. Still the Chinese way might make her do or bear things that will seem strange. So getting as much information about rites concerning death might be helpful for all involved. I am sending you power vibes to get through this, and, hey, you are not responsible for what's going to happen within the next months. When my MIL was diagnossed with terminal cancer, all I could do was be there for my DH (we didn't have children at the time) and let him lay his head when he needed to. My MIL lived in a different state and DH's youngest brother (who was the only one of the three boys who wasn't married) came home to stay with her as he had no real 'responsibilities'. We usually go to the MIL's but this year we have a great excuse: We'll be flying back from Germany, after 3 days in Venice, on T-day. I'll cook a turkey for the DH that weekend, and if his family doesn't like our absence, too bad. After last Christmas' nastiness with the MIL, that holiday might be conveniently spent elsewhere, too.   I just wanted to let everyone know that I will no longer be posting updates or anything here at the Kirk. If you would like an update to the situation with my son, many of you can contact me on another social media site by private message and I will be happy to share there. I have struggled with ranting about why I have made this decision, but in the end suspect it would do no good. Suffice it to say, one bad apple spoils the bunch, and once bitten, twice shy. Perhaps our community has grown so large that the feelings of support are just no longer there, or people do not know one another as well as in earlier days. I'm not sure, but if you are interested in updates regarding me and my family please contact me by email or on the other site.
  
  I certailny will continue to read the posts here and offer up thoughts and prayers for those who feel comfortable enough to post here. Please know that if you, like me, no longer feel comfortable posting here but have a need and would like support by prayer or good thoughts or a listening ear, many here have my email address (and have my permission to share it, at their discretion) and I am active on the other social media site and am always willing to offer a listening ear and a prayer for anyone who feels like contacting me.
  
  Thank you to all who have supported and prayed for me and my family and sent good thoughts and such over the past very hard 3 years and even before, back to probably 2001 or 2002 when I first posted here. There have been times when I know that all that has kept me taking another step forward was the power of your prayers and thoughts, and I appreciate that more than any of you can ever possibly know. There are not words in the English language to express my heartfelt gratitude at the outpouring of love and support my son and I received after my DH died. I cannot begin to explain the feelings of thankfulness and gratitude and overwhelming sense that people really *do* care that your support gave me then, and at other times as well. For that I am most appreciative, although that is much too small a word to contain the overwhelming feelings of love and support I have felt from so many of you in years past. Thank you all again, and may God hold each and every one of you and your family members and loved ones in the palm of His hand and close to His heart all those whom have prayed for me and supported me over the years.

  The young woman who is the early morning cook/waitress at a diner we frequent was burned out of her apartment recently when the very old, circa late 1800s building went down in flames. The Salvation Army found her a place to sleep for a few days and then a different apartment on the same street.
  
  When she returned to work she found that the old buzzards who frequent the restaurant every day had taken a collection and she received an envelope with more than $4000. Now she has had to tell them to stop bringing her furniture and appliances and such as she can't squeeze another thing into her new home.

It was difficult for the Salvation Army to find new apartments for the people who didn't have family to take them in because they were cheap apartments in an old crummy building, but what was affordable for the tenants. • Update on Mike Jr. - he was released last evening- going long inside... -- Kathy in PA, 04:40:30 10/10/12 Wed
  Just being able to go home raised his spirits immensely. He will need some speech therapy for the aphasia and some PT because he has weakness in his right hand. The Drs all say this is perfectly normal and to expect a full recovery because the surgery went so well. He has 63 staples in his scalp and is well enough to joke that he wishes there were 6 more so he could have "that sexy number.". Mike is a land surveyor by trade but will be off work for a few months and have to stay inside a lot more than he is used too. I am so grateful for your prayers and best wishes because I know they truly helped with this great outcome. I hate to ask for more, but if anyone would, could you please send a card? I think it will help as he's stuck inside. Their address is: Mike Barlow. 236 Machell Ave. Dallas, PA. 18612. Thank you again, this is the scariest medical procedure we've had in our family and being able to come here and share really helped me.

• UPDATE ON MIKE JR - thank you so much for the prayers for our son. The surgery went perfectly and even was finished two hours earlier than predicted. His motor skills are fine, he just has a little trouble by saying the wrong word, but he immediately realizes it and corrects it. When he was coming out of the anesthesia and they were asking questions and wanted to know what year it is, I heard him start to say 19.. And I panicked, but he finished with 82, which is his birth year. Followed that with, Oh shit.....I mean 2012 . I told the Dr 1982 was his birth year, so it was an easy mistake and they told me not to worry he's doing fine. He is still in a lot of pain and heavily medicated, but Dr. Coon saidmit couldn't have gone better. • Anon to keep my boss's matter private.  I just wanted to ask the Kirk to keep my boss's father in your prayers.  He was diagnosed with colon cancer last week and is having surgery tomorrow.  He also has heart problems that could make the surgery more difficult.  My boss's family has been through a lot in the past few years and while she tries to remain positive I know this is hard for her and them.  The only thing I can do to help is pray, ask you to pray, that he gets through the surgery ok and that he gets a positive prognosis.  Thank you all. -- Anon, 09:51:15 10/07/12 Sun

• E's teacher said the "A" word ... -- LadyMK, 05:51:35 09/28/12 Fri
  Everett came home yesterday with the three "Morning Work" sheets they are required to do every morning that he did not finish, even when given multiple chances. They are given 45 minutes first thing in the morning to finish 3 or so sheets, with about 4 to 6 lines each, with 4 to 5 "questions" or something to trace or write or color on each line. He got 2 lines done in 45 minutes. Then, he lost some Playtime and was given another chance to do it. He did not get anymore done. He lost the "priviledge" to eat snack (I have an issue with this, yes, take away the social part of snack and make him eat alone, but LET HIM EAT, he needs to!!!)and had to move his clothes pin from the green smiley to the yellow then to the red, as given a third apportunity to do the work he did not get anymore done. He did it at home in about 20 minutes, but that's because he had to go to the bathroom once and dawdled in there and then had to ask me something - he would have done it in about 5 to 7 minutes if he'd worked straight through. BUT, when I looked at what he'd done, he'd missed several questions comletly by leaving them blank. It's like he can't seem to focus enough to start at the top, work down the line, then the next, etc. til he has answered all the questions. I asked him why he didn't do the work at school and all he will tell me is that he was talking and wasting time and disobeying and being a "bad kid" by breaking the rules and having to move his clothes pin. I asked him why he had to move it and he knows its because he didn't listen to his teacher and do what he was told and do his work, but he CANNOT tell me WHY he doesn't do the work. Its like he doesn't know why - he says his brain tells him to talk and play and his brain wants to get him in trouble. He says he hears noise in his brain (that scared the shit out of me) but then he said "I know I am my brain, its myself telling myself to talk," so I don't think he's hearing voices, I think he just thinks he can blame things on his brain. Then he blamed SpongeBob, I HATE SpongeBob and limit what he watches of it just because of how the characters put one another down and, IMHO, some are almost cruel to some of the others. I told him I knew this had nothing to do with SpongeBob, so he dropped that one. I DID yell, I took him to the pharmacy and got back in the car while I was waiting for my script, thinking if I wasn't sitting right there in his face he might be more comfortable talking to me, but I ended up yelling at him, and I bet you a million dollars someone will call DFACS on me. Then, my mom used to grab my shoulders and get real close to my face when she was angry or frustrated, and I SWORE I'd never do that, but I did. I didn't shake him, I didn't hit him, NOTHING like that, and I told him I was so sorry and that I knew getting mad and yelling and getting in his face didn't help and that I would work on giving my anger to God and asking for patience and I would talk to our Pastor about my anger. (He is super-worried that someone will call DFACS again and report me and, in his words, "think you are a bad mom so they will take me away) I told him he didn't have to worry about that, to tell the truth if anyone asked him about me, such as, "When your mom gets mad does she yell?" and he said, "You just get frustrated because you love me and want me to do my best and you don't hit me and I love you even if you yell. You yell because you love me." I explained that yelling wasn't OK, and that of course I loved him, and that yes, I yell because I get frustrated when he isn't doing his best and I don't know how to help him. He forgave me, and asked me to forgive him for not doing his work, which of course I did, and asked him how I could help him fix this - but he doesn't know. So this morning the teacher said that she doesn't understand it either, that it may be a focus problem, but that he really does not talk and play, he just sits there doing nothing with the sheets in front of him. She said that she sees some - here it is - autistic traits in him. She said that when she was doing some testing for the state that they had to ask some higher-order processing questions, like word problems, and most kids had no clue but Everett answers correctly immediately BUT they have to be able to say HOW they reached that answer or prove thier work, and he just says, "My brain knew it." But when it comes to independent work, he can't do it and can't do problems where you have to manupulate shapes to copy one or where you have to write out your work. Well, I studied the learning differences between boys and girls in college and come from a single-sex school environmnet, and believe in single-sex education strongly. Research shows that some boys (a large percentage, really) are just not cognatively ready to learn to read or write in Kindergarten because Kindergarten has become the New 1st Grade. It's true - no more sand tables, trikes on the playground, etc. They have to sit at their seat at a table and are REQUIRED to do worksheets, not just to color a picture. And they are graded and have tests. My personal feeling is that my son is just not ready. I asked her about having him evaluated for OT, and she was hesitant. She said she would ask the therapists when they were at the school next and see what they say. She says she HAS seen improvements in focus since the beginning of the year. During Circle time and during Large Group Learning he does great, its just that he cannot work independently. I don't think he's READY to work independently. If I had my way, I would put him back in a Pre-K class, but I don't know if thats an option. I am reading a book called "Boys Adrift" about how more and more boys are living at home in their late 20's and early 30's because fewer and fewer are going to college, and when they go, fewer and fewer graduate. So they play videogames and watch TV and have no "real world aspirations" according to the book. One educator said that it is because we are expecting too much out of 5 year old boys, who seem to be, brain-wise, at the level a 3 and a half year old girl is at 5. Which is why most girls do well in this type of "Kindergarten becoming 1st Grade" - they are ready. Some of the boys are not. But she want to just wait and see what happens. Well, I'm not sure that's a good idea. He beats HIMSELF up inside becaue he knows he dissapoints me when he has to move his clothes pin and gets in trouble, BUT STILL CANNOT TELL ME WHY, if he KNOWS I will be upset, that he just doesn't do the work and get it over with. So, how many more days of moving his clothes pin do we have to deal with before he hates school and just gives up alltogether because he knows there is no way he can make Mama and Grandma and his teacher happy? Thus, another boy adrift, hating school from day one, ready to get out and be DONE by high school or possibly drop out and not go to college because of his first experience in Kindergarten. I am not willing to take that chance. If this happens next week, I am going to have to do SOMETHING. I think I will give it next week and then make an appointment with his teacher and the counselor and principal and ask if they will move him back NOW to a Pre-K class and allow him to start Kindergarten next year. If they won't, I am going to have to pull him. I'm not sure if the law says a 5 year old has to be in school or not, but if not, I'll look into that preschool in the town over and just see if they have a 4K program that would take him now, and if I can't afford it I am going to beg both sets of Grandparents for help. Actually, I am going to call them now, because in my heart I think he isn't ready and I DO NOT WANT to leave him in Kindergarten because I think that it is setting him up for failure. In "Boys Adrift" there is a quote from an Admissions Coordinator that says, "The best gift you can give your son is the gift of a year,", meaning starting Kindergarten at 6 versus 5. And I WISH that's what I had done.

I think it is great that you are involved with your son, but getting co angry for his kindergarten class work may be a bit much. I hate to be critical here, all come for support. But there is a child involved. Hell, a 5th grader would buckle under this much pressure. You are having to reinforce the fact that you still love him even though he has low grade in kindergarten.   • You will HAVE to be his advocate. School are NOT quick to want to test the kids. It means more money and more time and diligence on the teachers part (paperwork). You will need to find a way to push for testing without being labeled the crazy obnoxious mother. That means calm but diligent phone calls, visits, emails. I have taught preschool thru 12th grade. he could just be getting used to a school setting. It could be ADD or ADHD. I would ask for him to be tested. Ask what programs are available for him.   • UPDATE: I just spoke to the Assistant Principal (a young woman, probably 5 to 7 years younger than I am, therefore not burned out, and also not a former coach made principal, like the Head Principal, who only seems to care about rules and discipline) and she agreed that we are not looking at any kind of Autism or Asbergers and that Everett probably doesn't fall anywhere on that spectrum, nor are we looking at ADD or ADHD. I said I felt it was a Processing Disorder, a disconnect between the brain and the hands, and possibly a motor development problem, BOTH of which could be due to immaturity. She is going to have the School Psychologist observe him next week and I am to call Friday and make an appointment for all of us (at least me, the Assistant P and the Psychologist, HOPEFULLY his teacher too) to talk.     • There is a difference between the school psychologist and a behavioral health psychologist. Typically, school psychologists do individual testing for educational needs, ie IQ tests, performance tests, diagnostic tests, but not Pschological counseling type things- that is more in the guidance counselor's arena.       • I am not opposed to him talking to the counselor either, but I want to be present to witness what is said so nothing gets distorted by the person relaying it to me. Even if I have to sit where he can't see me but I can hear him as long as I am present and can hear every word (and I will record it as well) that is said so there is ABSOLUTLY NO QUESTION about anything. I have learned that you MUST CYA when it comes to your child - well-meaning adults can put words in kids mouths, hint at what they want the answer to be so the child tells them what they want to hear because children like to please adults. And I am now super-protective of anyone in any official capacity talking to my child and asking questions if I am not present to at least HEAR the conversation. I have been hurt badly in the past by NOT doing these things and words were twisted and misconstrued and bad things happened because of it. That's not going to happen again. I won't let it.   • I'm not being critical, but what is the harm in letting a psychologist talk to E? Perhaps there are suggestions that can be made to help him keep on task. Observation is one thing, but a school psychologist has the skills to evaluate the whole picture - but only if he's allowed to get the whole picture. It's not scary, it's just a talk. Personally, especially before you pull him (which as Jodi said coudl have some impact on him), I'd have a complete evaluation and testing done - including OT, ADD, and a discussion with the psychologist. • Asking for prayers for our son, Mike, who is 30 and will be having brain surgery tomorrow to remove an AVM (aterial venous malformation). They did an embolic surgery last week to put a type of glue in the thing to cut off the blood supply and it went very well, so we have high hopes the second one will go well too. It's like a tangle of yarn, but it's on the outside of his brain which is also in his favor. Once it's removed-that's it. It won't come back so that's also good. It will be a ten hour surgery, but he's able to go to Johns Hopkins which is tops in this type of surgery. I am optimistic but am asking for prayers for Mike and Dr. Coons. Has anyone dealt with this? They say there could be slight motor impairment, but that would be handled with therapy and he is young and strong, but it's still "my baby". -- Kathy in PA, 04:53:39 10/04/12 Thu

  • A former co-worker had a very similar surgery this past spring. She came through beautifully and was able to return to work, full-time, as an occupational therapist. She is in her mid-50's - lots older than he is. He should do very well. Sending prayers. (NT) -- CathyS, 18:53:15 10/04/12 Thu
  • My friend's son has had similar surgery twice, the last time with a gamma knife (?), and he's doing fine. When he was younger, he had problems with swimming (coordinating the movements) and his handwriting has always been terrible and very slow, which is a direct consequence of the pressure on his brain, but apart from that he's fine.   Hi y'all. Could I just ask for some special thoughts and prayers for my friend C. this month? October is always rough on him. He's 25, and a twice-over Iraqi war veteran. He was wounded during his second tour and is still recieving treatment. Four years ago this October, his sergeant, S. A. Miller, was killed in combat. C. puts up a good front, but he's really not doing too well. I don't know if it's survivor's guilt or PTSD or what, but he really just needs all the prayers he can get.

  Many of you know my friend, Kristin, already, whether from Fergus or from Facebook. Her dad is progressed in his cancer and not doing well these days. He is in New Hampshire and she is here in Northern Virginia...a very long drive away. He is currently checked into the hospital. She and her sister, who lives in Costa Rica, are both so torn over needing to keep their lives going and when to go to him. I'd just like to get as many good prayers going as possible for them.
