• God, it's hard when your kid hurts ... -- LadyMK, 06:25:15 09/26/12 Wed
  Everett is not adjusting to Kindergarten well. He is 5, and he begged me to "Put an F for FAILING (this was screamed while clenching fists at his sides and looking up at the ceiling with his eyes closed) and I will stay home and watch TV and live with you and I WON'T GET A JOB!!!!!", all over practicing writing his P's. Really? Really?!!!!??!!! He doesn't do the independent work even given multiple chances and when I send notes to the teacher abut what to do for him (after being informed by the school he was put in a slower-moving Kindergarten class because a "need was seen based on Kindergarten Placement Testing". Oh? Huh?!!?? Why the HELL am I finding out about this NOW and not at the END OF LAST YEAR???!??) all she tells me is he is "very slow in motor (writing/cutting skills) development" so we cut and try to practice writing, but he hates it. He writes very small and holds the pencil awkwardly, but he's a 5 year old boy - he probably IS behind - he didn't get Preschool like I would have liked and I was so depressed I couldn't work with him at home like I always thought I would with my kids - I would jerk him and home-school him, but for multiple reasons that please just lump under "Fibromyalgia is just so wonderful" I am not up for it. I have seen a decline in my cognitive functioning recently that alarms me greatly. Actually, it scares the sh*t out of me, to tell you the truth. SO, we're stuck with the local public school and a 5 year old and I really don't want to break him little spirit or have them break it either. Thanks.

  • And I see so many errors in this that it kills me. I've never been the best typist but I didn't know MY motor-skills and congitive functioning were suffering THAT much. Others with fibro/MS/nervous-system disorders - have you seen this? Is it a flare? Will it last? Is this my "new normal"?   • LadyMK it sounds like your wee man may benefit from some occupational therapy support that will aid his motor control and coordination. I don't know how hints work in the USA but in australia we can access 5 free visits through our GP and what it does is give the child activities and games to help improve motor coordination - rather than just constant practice of a skill they already struggle with.     • The school should have an occupational therapist coming in to the school (how often I don't know). I am surprised they haven't done anything about this yet...Declan had seen one and we weren't even told! (he was ambidextrous and wasn't excelling with either hand so they had the OT in to ask what to do...we had to 'choose' a hand for him *g*) Stay strong Mama...they all go through phases where they do NOT want to go...maybe it'll be over in a week or two.     • I can't afford a private preschool. He would have continued to go to the ONLY one within 100 miles of us (and remember that's what I was getting my degree in - Early Childhood Education, so I know what a mess this is) but I had to pull him when Adam died. So, he was home with me 2's, 3's and until last August, when he went to Pre-K. I guess he'll struggle thru this year and then they'll hold him back - I don't know. I can't take him to his Peds due to him being uninsured and the Nurse Practitioner ALONE is $200, much less his Peds guy who has seen him since he was 2 would cost probably $500 or more to get a Motor Skills Development Accessment - I know they exist, I just don't know how to access one for him. Neither does the school. His teacher hasn't recommended him for evaluation, and at this point I don't know if that's good or bad. But we both are stressed, and this has to stop.   • I would ask the school about getting him tested so that he can get occupational therapy and/or other services through the school!       • I have applied. I make too much in Social Security Survivors benefits (even tho that's the ONLY source of my income) to qualify. I called the GA Insurance Commision's office and they told me I was the percentage of the population that was "locked out" of purchasing insurance for my child.     • In Pa, if your child is tested and qualifies for special ed, no matter why, they can qualfify for medicaid under the disability clause, regardless of income. Additionally, many schools will try to discourage you or hold you off from testing him, but if you ut your request in writing, they must do hte special ed testing.       • Also, some fun ways to strengthen and improve fine motor skills can include daily playdoh play, writing letters in shaving cream, stringing beads, sticking golf tees into styrofoam, writing at slanted or vertical surface (tape his homework to a wall, puts the hand into an easier, more corrrect position for writing). I never thought about him writing standing up, but that makes perfect sense, with his hands in a better position.   • My son is in 1st grade this year and since last year homework has been a big struggle. He especially fights me about the repetitive stuff like practicing letters and words over and over. I think it's just boring for them. For your son, I suggest you google "how to improve fine motor skills" there are sites that can give you ideas on how to make it fun for him and then he won't even have to know that it's about school or writing or whatever.   • Praying so hard for both of you. School is so hard when your kids don't fit in the box they think all children should fit into. Some kids are just slower picking stuff up. I have a cousin who didn't learn to read until he was 8, and he WAS homeschooled, and his siblings were all reading in kindergarten. Not everyone is the same. I would definitely be worried about him feeling like a failure and wanting to give up at age 5. You might try getting him a different teacher. This concerns me greatly.   • Have his motor skills checked. My DS had a lot of the same issues. He had a motor skills problem. He went to physio and theapy and he's much better now.   • First, ((((LadyMK and Everett)))). Take a deep breath momma. It's hard for us to do things for our kids when we are upset. When my DH & I both lost our jobs and were on unemployment, we did not qualify for healthcare through the state (hilarious since they said we made to much on unemployment!) but they did cover our girls. Not sure what GA has to offer since we are in OH. But it's worth contacting your state job and family services department to find out what services they offer. I'd make an appt with the school that includes the teacher, school counselor and the principal. Discuss testing and what you and the school can do to help Everett not get left behind. If there is a learning issue, then you should have programs the school should offer to help that don't cost or the state would. I'm sorry you are going through all this.   My hair, always baby-fine to begin with, is thinning and falling out. Low thyroid (and stress) is to blame and my doctors are working to bring the levels up to where they should be, but meanwhile, my vanity is taking a hit. I've already cut about six inches off so that it falls just below my shoulders, only shampoo it when I absolutely must, and have taken to wearing hats. A lot. I'm thinking of buying a wig next, and taking advantage of so to have the long, luxurious curls I always wanted. :)
  
  I don't, however, want to deal with the obvious "why are you wearing a wig" questions (and people who know me would immediately know That Is Not My Real Hair if I suddenly gained 18" in length overnight. Likewise, where does one start shopping for such an accessory? What is the best material to use- real human hair or have sythetics caught up? I really don't want it to look like a costume piece, but can't I afford to spend a fortune on it, either. I'm definitely not looking to be the next Lady Gaga. Help?

  • Don't know where you live Anon but when I was going through chemo I wore a wig which I paid about $200 for. It looked so real I had folk stop and ask me where I'd got my hair done. I was so tempted to yank it off my head but it was winter and I'd have been cold LOL. I got it at a place called Trade Secrets. I looked at real hair wigs costing much, much more and was not impressed. It wasn't just the cost but the upkeep on a real hair one is considerably more complex than a synthetic one.   • I too suffered from hair loss when I was first diagnosed with UC, and I got my wig from a shop that someone told me about - the wig was not made with real hair, but I got it and then my hairdresser at the time even trimmed it a bit to make it more attractive. I wore that wig for quite some time and I still have a problem today with thinning hair - and am using a shampoo called Propolone that I bought through Soft Surroundings - it seems to be helping a bit, but it will never be enough.   • You don't use Splenda, do you? I've heard some people here say it makes their hair fall out.     • Splenda and aspartame (Equal) both make my hair fall out. Saccharin (Sweet & Low) doesn't bother me at all. The new problem is that they are sneaking Splenda (sucralose) into many things that are NOT low calorie. Things like Quaker cereals. I have given up. I eat my regular foods and just try to avoid drinks that contain Splenda or Nutrasweet. I use either Sweet & Low or real sugar in my tea, avoid diet drinks and just try to eat things in moderation.         • All I can suggest is read labels, read labels, read labels. Unfortunately, the label print is getting smaller and smaller - blame the lawyers for that one. (Manufacturer's are worried about liability so they have to label everything but at the same time they don't really want you to read it (too scary!) so they make labels/packaging even smaller.   • I'm going through this too. My vanity finally got me to the dr. for hormone and thyroid tests. I have enjoyed my tonibrattin.com ponytail. I now grab it instead of a baseball cap for bad hair days and I get compliments a lot when I wear it. I got a small, simple one that's a hair clip with ponytail attached.   I have been on chronic pain meds for YEARS. Most people don't know it as my doctor and I have worked very hard to find the right combination of relief (physical pain from many sources) and feeling non-drugged and able to participate in life as fully as I can. Please do not judge me...I know all the arguments about taking chronic pain medication. For me, the alternative is to sit in a chair or lie in bed in agony. I HATE taking medication but find I honestly can't function without it. Yesterday I began a new pain medication, methadone, small dose, three times a day. I was a bowl of jello!!!I could barely say my name! I could not walk, talk, or perform any of my normal duties. Has anyone had experience with methadone? Will I get used to it and be able to function? I cut the pills in half and am taking half-doses every four hours rather than a full dose every eight. Is it worth trying to continue? How long before I don't feel as drugged as I did? Today is better, taking the half-dose at a time, but I still feel affected. I was prepared for a big pain-surge for awhile, but NOT for being unable to function! Any info is muchly appreciated! And Thanks!!

  • My mother was on methadone for a while because of her arthritis and didn't have a good experience with it. Not knowing what is causing your pain, I can only offer hugs and prayers and hope that you find relief soon. Have you tried/throught of trying accupuncture?   • I think you will find that a difficult prosciption. I would imagine a long line of hoops to jump thru to get it regularly. But that's a guess. Anyway, it is a hard hitter, in the class with morphine and heroine. Do be careful with that, it forgives mistakes like the IRS.. rarely. I understand how chronic pain effected my life.   • My DH lives with chronic pain. Unfortunately, all of the pain meds he tried only made him feel worse, required higher and higher doses, and eventually he weaned off. He was on methadone at one time - it's commonly used in pain clinics - but didn't care for it b/c it made him totally stoned and didn't really help the pain. That being said - many people take it successfully. It is a heavy drug, true, and it can form a PHYSICAL dependence as can all pain meds. But if you're careful, take it as directed, and work closely with your doctor, you may find it helps. I think you should talk to your doctor, though, before you try changing doses around.   • Have you tried Duragesic patches? I have to use them for my fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis pain. I won't let myself go up to the methadone level, but that's just my personal "hard limit" when I think about pain medications. Good luck, but please BE CAREFUL. A dosing mistake of ANY regularly-used pain med can be FATAL. I know from personal experience. Email me if you'd like, I certainly know and understand what it's like to be in chronic, non-stop relentless pain, and I do not judge you at all for your personal choice to stay on pain meds. I weaned myself off and had to go back on the patch 4 months later as my quality of life declined so sharply and I could not care for my son without the medication. Good luck and email me if you'd like, I am always available if you need to talk, and this is not something everyone understands, the chronic pain and the need for medication, but I do, and as I said, I do not judge. • I could use a few prayers - I applied for a management position in my company. It would mean a step up financially as well, and with two kids in college, we could really use it. With DH being disabled, the only increases in income around here are whatever I can accomplish - and truth be told I was ambivalent about the job. However, the Senior Manager called and asked me to apply - which I took as a Very Good Sign - and we had a long conversation about where the job could go in the future. So - a few good thoughts, vibes, or prayers would be great. (Please don't mention on FB as I have work colleagues there who don't know about the call from the manager.)   OK. So my daughter is 25 and in university. She does really well in almost all aspects of her life. I'm just worried because she seems to have no friends and doesn't really seem to care. The worrying part to me is that she seems to lack emotions, or emotional connections with people. She has had 'good' friends in the past but whenever she moves (which is a lot) she seems to be content to just let those people go so easily. I'm wondering if anyone has had similar issues or has some advice...maybe I just worry too much but my other 2 are completely opposite to her.

  • She may be very introverted. I am an introvert, and while I love having friends, I am terrible at keeping in touch with them. I think and care about them and love to know that they are there, but I get caught up in my personal alone time and am quite content that way, sometimes. But if I didn't have my friends (who are very aware of my introvertedness), I would feel very alone. I LOVE when they call me. Sometimes I make myself make the effort to call or text, but it isn't something that I am drawn to, naturally. Still, it's much healthier to reach out to friends and be social, because too much solitude can make you crazy.   • I'm an introvert too. I am very comfortable by myself doing my thing. I will say that I have about 5 girlfriends that I am close to. I don't see or talk to them all the time. Sometimes I may go a few weeks but I know they are there and they are dear to me. I will admit that when I am around certain social butterflies, I get jealous and want to be like them.   I'm struggling financially, and it's so easy to allow myself to get sucked into those feelings of despair...but I'm not doing it this time. Because the truth is, it's been worse. And my troubles are nothing compared to the troubles of so many other people right now. So this is me, reminding myself of my many incredible blessings and refusing to feel sorry for myself, because I truly am up to my eyeballs in goodness and love, and I need to recognize it and feel gratitude for it.
  
  Thank you to an Abundant God and Universe for my family's good health and well-being. They drive me crazy sometimes, but they're mine, and they're here, and they're very, very well. Thank you for my husband's good job, and good health benefits for our kids. Thank you for eyes to see, ears to hear, and a healthy able body that allows me to work hard for the family I love so much. Thank you for safe shelter, clean running water, working appliances and cars, food and clothing. Thank you for extended family that is so generous with their time and resources, emotional support and friendship. Thank you for things to look forward to, perspective, and our ability to give to others. Thank you for this forum where I can be free to say what I mean and learn so much from others. I am blessed in mind and body and spirit and these money worries are a blip in a generous Universe that reminds me at every turn that LOVE is the end-all, be-all... not debt, and not fear.   I don't really ken if I'm looking for advice, or a place to rant, or just a shoulder to cry on, but at any rate, I am going to throttle my dear ole' da, and soon.
  
  My father has made it very clear over the years that there isn't much of a filter between brain and mouth, nor does he make much of an effort to install one. Fine, whatever, he doesn'thave much of a social life, so whenever his opinions get a little too over the line, it's usually just the family that hears them and we just roll our eyes and go "Whatever, Dad." However, lately he's gone beyond the basic opinions on politics and the weather and into sheer ignorance, and that ignorance is in a field that is hurting certain family members, myself included, very, very deeply.
  
  Case in point: I have bipolar disorder. I was first diagnosed with chronic, clinical depression in high school and with BPII in college. Earlier this year, as I was leaving for an appointment with my psychiatrist, the following conversation took place:
  
  Him: So you think Dr. Jones is really helping you?
  Me: Oh, very much so. I'm so glad I switched doctors. He's been a great help.
  Him: He can't be helping you that much. You still take all those meds. Don't you think it's time to come off of them?
  Me: *facepalm*, as I have to explan that this isn't something that goes away, but must be treated and monitored, rather like heart disease or diabetes.
  
  And there will be other things, like a letter to Dear Abby in the paper will spurn a "He shouldn't have married her, he knew she was depressed, blah blah blah, I wouldn't do it..." type statement. Thanks, Dad. Or he'll make a comment about my brother's longtime girlfriend, who also suffers from depression, about how he hopes he knows what my brother is getting into with "that disease" (they've been dating for three years). Needless to say, he doesn't make me feel any better about my single status.
  
  I think what bothers me most though is that he'd rather keep his head buried in the sand than even attempt to learn anything about any of this. You'd think that if your kid had any type of illness, visible or otherwise, you'd want to know as much as you could to try to help him or her, but no. He left all that to my mother and now just leaves me occasionally (well, more than occassionally) wanting to scream and knock some sense into him.

    • Lemora- I can't cut him out completely; I still live at home. I do end up spending a lot of time in my room when I'm there though. My parents are still married and my mother just tunes him out when he gets all rant-y, or at least will verbally try to knock some sense into him when he really starts up. I don't want to cut him out of my life; except on this subject, he can actually be quite fun to be around and is knowlegable (sp?) in a variety of subjets, making him an intellegent conversationalist.   • He is toxic. He is never going to change. But you can... Spend as little time with him as you must. (If you are still at home I do understand that this is harder.) Do you honestly respect him? No? Then don't give his opinions any weight. (Easier said than done. We all want our parents to love, except, and support us, but that doesn't always happen.) I came from a dysfunctional family. My father still has no filter between his brain and his mouth. I now limit my time with him. He has hurt me so many times that I no longer care for his opinion. I have seen so many people (in my line of work) that think they are fine (because they have taken meds!) and thus stop their meds - it's bad news when they do & I hate that your own dad, who should be caring about & supportive of his child, would say something like that.   • I suspect your Dad comes from an era/generation where any mental illness was a) taboo and b) totally misunderstood. People from this generation think that anyone with a mental illness can just 'snap out of it if they put their mind to it'. I'm not sure there's a whole lot you can do about this, except to perhaps (if you can be bothered!) sit him down and explain it all to him in a civilised conversation. Maybe tell him that it would help YOU if he would try to understand. If he still doesn't get it, I think it's just time to let it go and ignore his ignorant comments on the subject in future.     • Leigh has a good point. My sister was diagnosed as bi-polarover 40 years ago. My Mum, who loved us all very much was very old-fashioned in her thinking. While she was supportive of my sister, she was afraid that it was something she had done that caused the illness. Could it be that you father habors the same fear? I'm not defending his cruelty - there's no excuse for that - maybe his failure to understand is due to his fear that it's somehow his fault. "guy" is nice in middle of bad divorce. is all about you g son and sheltering from divorce fallout. ex is bad news. he recently got new apartment in nicer area better schools yard space for child to play. child now in new school happy there. talked about it today and he just wants to get thru next court hearing. I tried to be encouraging that he's on roller lasted w ups downs curves. but ride will end and he ll be ok. he said its looking up and I said I was glad to hear it. then my company terminated him today! I am so sad for him! please send good wishes for a good guy and virtually single dad who needs some good luck

  Two female friends. They socialize with each other and with their husbands and children. The husbands don't have a lot in common, but they get along well enough to spend time together when their wives organize social gatherings for their families.
  
  One of the husbands has a short lived affair. His wife is devastated and her female friend helps her through the crisis. The wife who was cheated on decides to stay in the marriage for her own reasons and because her husband is remorseful and willing to undergo counseling. Her female friend indicates that she's not necessarily in favor of her friend's decision, but each to their own.
  
  The friend's husband, however, decides he wants nothing to do with the cheating husband any more - in fact, he states to his wife that her friend is always welcome in his home, but the husband is not. The two female friends still see each other regularly.
  
  The woman who was cheated on misses the socialization with the family who have now cut her husband from their lives. She feels very sad about it and feels the friend's husband is too judgmental and unforgiving.

  • I have been in a very similar situation myself...a friend's husband cheated on her, she decided to take him back, we accepted her decision...but, my DH is unforgiving and so our 'whole family' socialising came to a halt. Sad. I am also having trouble respecting the husband and so am happy not to socialise too much but really do miss time with my friend. Like I said: sad.   Had a sad thing happen last night - realised I am starting to lose my mother before she has even gone. I had rang her last night ( ring her most days depending on shifts) and was starting to tell her I had been feeling a bit down, and not sleeping again - which happens most winters - when she cut in and started to tell me what she and my aunty had done that day. I stopped her and said mum, I'm trying to tell you something important to me, and she was very offhand saying ok, you go first then...
  She just didnt really care -was very hard. I said no, the moments past - what did you two get up too, we talked about that then finished the call.
  She's been through so much, but is just a different person from 6months ago. Harder,self absorbed. I can understand it, but I dont like it.

  • SueP, I hope you see this as I am late to the party as usual - I feel the same way about my daddy. Lost Mama in 2006 after an 8 year battle with Alzheimers, Daddy met and began an affair with his new wife while Mama was still in the nursing home, they married on Christmas Eve after Mama died in March of that year. he has hardened his heart to me (I am the younger daughter, the "problem child", etc ... needy as a teen and young adult, stable, had a child. lost my husband at 34, therefore needy AGAIN) and I think the wife encourages him to just "tune me out". She has informed me I am not welcome to move within 100 miles of their zipcode, as Daddy "is a different person" when I am around. I am losing him when I need him the most - not "needy" need him, but need to visit with my son, who is 5, and need to feel comfortable about the upcoming end of his life, and I don't, because of her.   I'd like to ask if you all would keep my best friend and her husband in your thoughts and prayers this week. Wayne is in the hospital once more with congestive heart failure, kidney function problems and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. His cancer has gone from stage 3 to stage 1 with treatment, but he has had constant other issues all year and the doctors just can't seem to find the right mix of treatments. And my friend, Debbie, is exhausting herself with taking care of him and their mountain property. She can't work because of taking care of him full time and the bills are astronomical now. They live in NC and I live in WV and I can only get down there once in a while to help. All warm thoughts and cyber hugs will be appreciated - this place is a miracle in itself.

• Karen's Memorial Gathering -- Fiona, 19:04:17 08/14/12 Tue
  I just wanted to let you all know about the gathering we had this past Friday night in memory of Karen at Fergus. It was an emotional year for sure as Karen/Aislinn was always such a big part of Fergus. We had a get together after our Friday night dinner and were lucky enough to have Thom, Kellye and wee Lily join us. We had Toxic Haggis sing a few songs that reminded us of Karen: Loch Lomond, Home for a Rest etc. JP and ValL had brought a really pretty memory candle to give to her family. Colly had made a lovely big collage of photos which was posted on ValC's trailer as well as ribbons which we all pinned on. Thom had brought a great framed photo which he called "after the alcohol kicked in" of her giving him a little shoulder flash *G* as well as the Dunkie the highlander mug which Karen had requested we all sip some single malt from which we all did. It was really nice and it really felt like Karen was with us in spirit. The sun was out during our gathering for one of the few times all weekend. :)

When she saw her oncologist for the last time, he told her she had a very short time to live. She asked how long and he said it could be as little as two weeks or some bit longer.   I'm so very happy for today I got a new position. I had a long drive to my former school (60 miles/ 100 km) and the place was well away from my family & friends. I also have had some serious troubles with both kids & parents at that school, but thankfully those are all sorted out and in the past.
  
  This new school is in the same town my inlaws live and we've visited there almost weekly so the place is already familiar for me. My long time dream is a house of our own and possibly by this transition we'll be able to follow this dream. Moving there will also give me a better change to help my parents as the distance won't be so long anymore.
  
  So now feel thankful and blessed.

  I'm sorry not to have been around for a while, but I've had a crappy summer. I am so tired of the heat (21 days over 100 degrees),no rain in 78 days,I hate the brown grass, the leaves are falling off of the trees, it looks more like Oct. around here, and the DH came home from the hospital yesterday after 23 days as a patient. From infections on his legs (MRSA), and severe breathing problems, I am at my wits end and I just want to quit. I found out this morning after I went to my DS home to babysit that he didn't take his medication last night after dinner, and he also didn't do any of his 8 daily breathing treatments after he got home from the hospital yesterday. I'm sorry for the bitching, but I'm pissed and the DH doesn't seem to care that I'm worried.

  I have not been on the boards lately due to not feeling well. It has been a "long hot summer" and we have decided that when he ultimately retires we will sell and move either back to our previous location in MN to another area that a has colder climate and less humidity. I gave had a hard time these past few months w/increased pain. I had lost interest in some of my favorite activities which scared me. My Dr has been wonderful and prescribed a mild depression med. I am coming out of the shell I put myself in. Mike was leery of getting another dog but Griff has been one of the best presents for me. He has forced me to do more around the house and making sure he and Shadow are well taken care of. I cannot stay outside long due to the heat as it is hard for me to breathe. It saps my energy quickly and the back pain gets worse etc. I'd appreciate your well wishes and if you do not see me on the boards for awhile it is most likely due to my pain and my mood. But I pray everynight for each of my dear friends. Prayers are support I send to you all everyday. I know Vicki and Midges' family are going through difficult times now.   • I feel your pain. As a native Californian, I can tell you that we in hot climates experience cabin fever in the summer when we dare not leave our A/C to sally forth into the oven outside.   • Sending cooling breezes, fog, and hugs also. When I was in Southern California, I watched ANYTHING set in the British Isles at the local art cinema, in the dark, in the daytime. I'd pull over while driving and visualize all my favorite places up north, with eyes closed. Then, I'd open them and soldier on. Depression meds didn't help me at all.   If you have a few moments, could you say a prayer for my DS. He has a history of Depression/Suicidal/Anxiety Disorders. This all started three years ago and after a very rough Junior years in high school, he seemed to be doing really well as long as he took his meds. Well, this summer, he decided he wanted off his meds and stopped taking them in June. Needless to say, they have worn off and he is back to how he was three years ago. The problem is he is 19 and I cannot force him to take his meds. Plus, he needs to realize for himself that he is much happier and more mentally stable when he does take them.
  
  Anyways, it was really rough here in our home this morning. I *think* he restarted his meds but I know he is still mentally fighting the idea of taking them everyday. (Thank God that he has an appointment with his psychiatrist tomorrow!)
  
  If you have a minute to send a prayer our way, we could use it! I want my son happy and healthy!

  I go back to work on Mon. I still have my part time job, so I'll be back to 60+ hours a week.   • Probably ageing....a bit early, but I wouldn't be concerned at this point. It is not so much, "Where are the keys?", but "What are these for?" that should be the red flag. All of us will sometimes reach for a word or name we haven't used in a long time. What are you doing for some extra mental gymnastics? It's.really.important. Ok, Ok, so no one has free time, but are you trying to learn something new (mental skill or physical skill....it doesn't matter....it is the process that counts) or doing some sort of puzzle (like sudoku or a crossword) that makes you think a bit each day? Are you also physically active....no, no, no...it's not necessary to start running marathons, but doing a power walk, a stretch class, a yoga dvd, something? I'm a generation ahead of you and started having to reach for the occaisonal word or name about 10 years ago and rely more heavily on calendars and list-making than I did decades ago.   • I also am a generation ahead of you. I began to forget names for things & people about 10 years ago. One day I was already upset & completely blanked on my driver's license #, which I have known since I was 16! I've gotten fuzzy on "whether that happened in 1957 or 1958." But, I find that I still have the best memory of all my friends. Yes, all of them. Perimenopause may be a lot of it. This happened to my mother, whose memory was always VERY selective. It feels like, to me, that everyone else's memory is lacking, so maybe I'm not a very good judge. Cross referencing is a way to remember things. Also, keep a calendar and make lists. Organize your record keeping and DON'T keep your calendar or day planner only in your computer. Unless you have a "smart" phone where you can look it up at all times. Keep a day planner in your purse AND a calendar on the wall. Where you can always refer to any of these at any time. If you're anxious about something, this can affect your memory.   • I would not think it a cause for concern. Maybe you are experiencing stress, too many activities and/or perimenopause. I have always had a problem with names unless I make a conscious effort to remember. I am 2 generations ahead of you and not concerned about memory, sometimes, though, I stumble in forgetting the word I want to use. Dave's advise to do puzzles is good.   • Thanks guys, that helps. I will completely forget something that DH & I talked about 2 days ago, but I remember other things from the same day just fine. I've always been bad at names but good with faces. I'll go upstairs, into the garage or the next room and forget why I'm there. Not every time, but often enough. I keep a paper planner (for which I am teased by my techno savvy friends & colleagues but I don't care) and I play Scrabble against my Ipad daily, as well as Words With Friends, I also read a lot. I'm just noticing it more and I'm a little concerned. It's not my thyroid, I have blood drawn every 3 months and am on the right dose. I do exercise, whether it's walking and playing with the dogs, doing house/yard work, yoga or bellydance I'm pretty active. I suppose it is just an age/perimenopause thing. Thanks for the responses.   • I do the same thing and it drives me nuts. I have complete black holes, where I don't remember having a conversation, or that i turned on a sink and left it running for 2 hours.   • I worry about it too, since Dimentia runs in my family. I've never had a great memory, but recently mine has been really bad. It drives my boyfriend, who has pretty much a photographic memory a little crazy that I don't remember things he's said or even doing an event with him (I do remember doing the event, though, which is very important, I think!). I chalk it up to too much stress in my life and keeping too busy, which has effected my health in other ways, too, with adrenal fatigue and panic attacks. Foggy brain is a symptom of stress and overextending yourself, as well as many other potential health issues. I've done a lot of Googling of it. Mine is mostly because of stress from my business. • Just heard from Lady Lukkarinen (Helene) and the reason she's been a little quite of late is she suffered a small stroke but she's assures me she's now feeling a lot better. She'll let us have an update on Karen's tree's as soon as she's able. Neither one of us is going to Fergus this year.
