Okay, I am trying and trying to scroll past this post but I just can't. *g* I read this and probably would have really liked it if I hadn't read a very similar story right before called, "Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight" by Alexandra Fuller. Same idea, true story as recollected by a daughter, but it's an English family who move all around Africa. I believe the author lives in Montana now. What I preferred about this book over "Glass Castle" was the author was just so much warmer and funnier about her crazy upbringing as opposed to what I perceived as Jeanette Walls' arm's length, "Here...read about my completely cuckoo family but didn't I turn out okay...I was never one of them". I don't mean to be unkind about such a traumatic upbringing but there was a certain truth lacking, I found, and I think it was just the author's voice speaking to me. - Oh, goodie! This was my first out of Africa book. *g* I hope you find it at your library. Before I posted something possibly obscure, I checked my library and they do have it so hopefully it's available in others. If not, I can always loan you out my copy (okay, my SIL's copy but she'll never know since I've had it for 2 years *g*). My mom, SIL and I all passed around these two books, my SIL and I had the same view but my Mom liked them both equally.     - Hey, Julie. I definitely found it interesting to compare and contrast the voices, the experiences...I am estimating that both authors should be roughly the same age so their recollections should be of roughly the same period yet on the other side of the world from each other. There was major political unrest in the countries Fuller lived in versus a safe America for Walls. I just really appreciated and respected the way Fuller describes her family's quirks, neglect and racist beliefs (and her own racist behaviours as a child) with such honesty but also with affection. While "Glass Castle" spoke to me as an adult telling me of her childhood, "Dogs" spoke to me as a child in the moment so I think that is why I am more sympathetic to her.
