Subject: I loved Vol. 1. But, while I am fascinated by the whole New Deal era, I have to admit that descriptions of the various programs in vol. 2. feel like they were lifted in chunks from old brochures in some of BWC's writing. (If you found #1 hard rowing, you'd really be put off by #2.) These descriptions are interwoven with descriptions of the dramas and traumas of ER's inner circle, her marriage to FDR, his presidential challenges, political games, and the gathering clouds in Europe in the 1930's.>>>>

I haven't read Doris Kearns Goodwin's book, or any others, so I can't compare writing styles. I find the cast of characters so fascinating that reading bits about most of them makes me want full bios or a book devoted exclusively to a particular subject. (Like, how many First Ladies have committed suicide or attempted it as a result of the pressures --makes you wonder. A lot of it was Victorian straitjacketing in general. Another book I'd love to read would be devoted to Arthurdale --which still exists-- and ER's other attempts at creating sustainable communities.) Did you know there's a new bio about Frances Perkins, FDR's Secretary of Labor out to good reviews (she crafted the legislation mandating the 8 hr. workday, minimum wage, Social Security, and so much that still positively affects our lives (now I'm starting to sound like one of those brochures)! One of my bffs is a member of WILPF, and used to work in their offices in Jane Addams' house in Philadelphia. Marlene's office had been JA's bedroom. I remember your story about how Eleanor Roosevelt charmed your Republican father during his day with her at the college where he was dean. Honestly, she charmed almost everyone she met!
