  • Oh, I'm so going to read this, I love Knole, and the surrounding area of Kent is my absolute favourite, at home place to be. I live on the other side of Kent now, but only about 50 minutes away. There are many stories of the Sackville-wests when you visit historic homes around here. (NT) -- Margy, 13:23:28 06/06/12 Wed

  • And I'm totally envious of you for living where you do!! Visiting Knole is on my bucket list, as is visiting Sissinghurst. I guess we can't visit Long Barn, as it's in private hands and not open to the public. Elizabeth I also stayed at Knole, I think. She definitely came to tea. I am especially moved by Vita's lifelong sorrow at not being able to inherit Knole; having to watch her dissolute cousin Eddie eventually sell it because he wasn't up to the job; and using the secret key, bequeathed to Vita by her uncle Charlie, to pay clandestine, night-time visits to a particular garden at Knole where she had played as a child. Being chatelaine of Knole would've suited her down to the ground. (NT) -- Lemora, 08:44:48 06/09/12 Sat
