Subject: Game of Thrones

I've been reading A Game Of Thrones, finding it verra addictive. I will admit it took me a wee bit to get into but now that I am, wow.

Each chapter deals with the viewpoint of one person, in the third person, there are about 8 different 'story-tellers'. Some of them are main characters to each other (for example, there is a husband and wife combo) and some of them are strangers to the rest, although obviously known. I particularly enjoy the story line of Dany & Drogo, and admit I skipped the rest of the book to about the middle, to solve their cliff-hangers. That did cause mnor spoilage, but only very minor.

The book is billed a fantasy, but it really isn't. It is set in a late-medival type time-frame, all the characters (so far, anyway) are human and everything that has happened is perfectly plausible. The only fantastical element is the fact the winters and summers each last scores of years, rather than 6 months. The book starts as summer (which is the only season many of the characters have ever known) is coming to an end. It is quite symbolic as the theme is the possibility of the end of years of peace and prosperity under a good king. (this isn't spoiler, it's all on the jacket). There are references to mythical or magical creatures, but no more than the 'boogie men' of real life - we don't know (yet) if these creatures are real or legend.

Great read, not beach fluff, but worth it the effort. If you like the length and depth of an Outlander, you'll like this.
