Subject: Room by Emma Donoghue and Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

I read both these books this week, and they were both really really good. I'm sure I picked up recommendations for them both on here.

Memoirs of a Geisha
This is a novel but written as the heroine relating her life to a journalist. The story is of Chiyo, a young girl raised in a fishing village on a coast in Japan who is sold into slavery, to become a Geisha in Kyoto, which becomes her ardent desire. It is set before, during and after world war 2. Parts of it are a bit hard to take, but overall it is a moving story, and an insight into the Japanese mindset of the time.

Room
This is the story of Jack, who lives with his Ma in a room 11 feet square. He thinks everything in room is really Real, and everything else is Only TV. When he is 5, Ma tells him about Outside, and makes a daring plan for them to escape.
Room is not the sort of book I normally pick up, but I'm glad I read this. It's so well written, and as a person who cries at advertisements, I didn't cry at all until the very end. It's dark, but it's written in such a way that it is not at all depressing.
