She mentions this title being on theModern Library's 100 Best list and she'd never heard of the author before(oh, need to go check out this book list too) She stated in her review..."Filled with folklore and mythology, some Native American, some Mexican, some European, it is brought to life in a brilliant way." • For Western: Lonesome Dove or The Horse Whisperer. For SciFi: The Host, Hunger Games, The Handmaid's Tale or Ender's Game. For Mystery: Shadow of the Wind, Daughter of Time, or The Thirteenth Tale. • If you want a shortish one for historical fic you could try The Widow's War by Sally Gunning. Pamelalass loaned it to me and it was excellent: set on the Cape in the 1700's. Some good YA fantasies that are crossover adult are Graceling or Fire by Kristin Cashore or Sabriel by Garth Nix. • I have to agree with The Thirteenth Tale for the mystery section; I read it over the hols & its very good. I also loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan as suggested in the Historical section. A Thousand Splendid Suns was an amazing read but does a book set in the very recent past really count as Historical? I'm not sure it fits in any of the categories.   • The library reading program guide lists historical as "novels that are set in the past, before the author's lifetime and experience. Accuracy, from mnute details to the protrayal of well-known events, is integral to the story. The primary goal of Hostorical Fiction is to bring history to life." Now, honestly it's up to us the reader to decide where we want to put stuff. It's the library clerks at the circulation desks who are going to stamp my little book and give me my raffle tix. They're probably not going to debate each book choice I put down!! This really is a fun program for us grown-ups as the kids have their's over summer break. The guide does say no magazine's or children's books. After reading Holly's suggestions I wonder if YA counts...some of those books are cross-overs. • For Westerns, I agree - Lonsome Dove is the best ever written. But, it's long, so you may also want to try Appaloosa by Robert Parker. And, I haven't read it, but I read a review of a bokk I know I will read - Sing My Name by Ellen O'Connell. • Two historical novels I have read for college that were really good are The No-No Boy by John Okada... set just after WWII from a Japenese American teenage boys perspective. Very Good!!! As well as Waterlily by Ella Deloria about a Dakota family/tribe right towards the beginning of contact with the whites... couldn't put it down! (NT) -- NancyH, 12:45:45 02/04/11 Fri
