Subject: "Finding Oneself" Books: Fiction or Non-Fiction

We've had a discussion over on the "Polls" Board about "Eat, Pray, Love" which got a lukewarm reception among those who've actually read it. I love two books in this category and wonder if anyone has read either of them: "Enchanted April" by Elisabeth Von Arnim; and "An Unknown Woman" by Alice Koller. The first was written in 1922, is fiction, and concerns a group of Englishwomen who pool their housekeeping money and rent a small villa in Italy for the month of April. Even if you've seen the wonderful movie, read the book. It charts their emotional and spiritual transformations. The Koller book is the author's true story of her solitary stay in a rented beach cottage ---just post graduate school and at loose ends-- and how she discovers, comes to terms with, and discards the deepest source of her unhappiness. I think it was written in the sixties. I found this book in a women's restroom of a restaurant. Intrigued, I took it back to my table, intending to turn it into the cashier before I left. As I began to read, I realized it had been left there on purpose, to be found and read. When finished, I passed it on. It's that kind of book. Is anyone familiar with either of these?
