In reply to: 'becca beccabee 's message, "I read The Far Pavilions many years ago in paperback and have almost totally forgotten the story. I have since found it in hardback and am looking forward to the re-read but am afraid that I won't be able to hold the book it is so big! I thought it was interesting that there were several copies available on eBay in two volumes, but I think that they were a condensed version. I am trying to accumulate all of MM Kaye's books, especially her autobiographies. I have Michener's Tales of the South Pacific and I want to get a number of his other books that I read from the library. There was one very interesting one, different for him, about a young man who gets a job running a retirement/elder care facility." on 05:01:07 02/03/08 Sun

I have almost all of M.M. Kayes books and I especially thought her autobio was interesting. but have always felt FP was superior in every way. I have found several of them at the Goodwill stores, and some at library book sales, as well as ebay. I haven't seen actual copies of the 2-volume Far Pavilions, so am not sure what that's all about either. I also have most of Michner's books; at least all the ones I like. I remember reading the one about the retirement home too (Recesssional),it was so different than anything else he wrote, but a good story.
One of his very first books, Fires of Spring, is more along those lines, shorter but sweet, and very good also. It's getting difficult for my hands to handle these big books too, so am probably going to try and accumulate at least some of them on audio whenever possible.
