Chester was originally a Roman fortress so we have a lot of history and archaeology. We have a Cathedral that dates back to the 1090's. Although there has been several stages of building and restoration there are still some Romanesque arches in the Cathedral dating back to the 1100's. Many of the shops have old vaults or crypts dating back to the 1100's. I used to work in a bookshop with an excellent example of one of these crypts. The street layout within the walls hasn't really changed since the Roman's first built the fort. So anyone walking through Chester is walking in the footsteps of all those who went before us. The Castle is now mostly C18th, but it still has a Norman tower with original interior medieval wall paintings dating back to the reign of Henry III. The city is also surrounded by huge stone walls dating back to to the early medieval period with some very old Roman sections. In some of the shops and pubs you can still see wattle and daub sections of wall dating back to the middle ages. Only a few weeks ago they were conducting an archaeological dig behind the 300 year old building where I work and they found some medieval burials. It's difficult to dig anywhere in Chester without hitting some very old archaeology.
