Its a tought choice. Both of the books are ones that will stick with me a long time, but I think I'll have to go for Green Darkness-for two main reasons both personal. (I doubt I could ever be a good reviewer since reading is so very personal for me.) First, I found the past life idea interesting. I have always been fascinated with all things mystical. Secondly and this is probably the real issue-the difference in full fiction as opposed to historical fiction. I find myself constantly wondering as I read-is that part real? did he really say that? was that character real? etc, etc. And it makes a separation between me and the character.
I think Seton did a great job of showing how the whole idea of superior birthrite warps people, but even taking that into consideration, I didn't really really like John, too ambitious for me. He had it all, wealth, power, love but he wanted more. Katherine was second to his ambition. I felt he didn't truly love her mainly just desired her- he didn't think what was best for her only what was best for him. I really liked her character though- better than Celia. Still, I found the end very sad. John finally comes to her in the end, after his dreams of kingship are over, worn out and broken down with a few years left,- better than nothing, but why could he have not, at least, communicated with her in all those years- said he understood and had forgiven her? wished her well- anything. I understand that they shouldn't have seen each other but to not even see, acknowledge your own kids???? especially after Constanza died. I know he had to go to Aquitaine but he could have at least communicated- if he had wanted to. And more than likely could have visited.
So, while I did like the book mostly I just found it sad.

One thing that also affected my reading- a big geneology chart in the front with Katherine Swynford as third wife to John in red so I couldn't miss it. I knew all along they would marry.
