  *** there be 'An Echo in the Bone' SPOILER below! *** and I'm sorry if this Q has been asked before!
  
  I absolutely love Ian & Rachel! I think they are adorable - the closing scene of 'Echo' gets me every time: "Thee is my wolf..."
  
  I was just wondering though, do you think Rachel knows about Emily 'works with her hands', Ian's Mohawk wife? If she doesn't know, how do you think she'll react to the knowledge?
  
  I'm just curious, because we know that Rachel is aware of Ian's popularity in the military camp (with other men's wives, at least) but she has a lot to learn about his experience in brothels, and his Mohawk 'family'.... and I remember in 'Echo' that Ian surprises himself when he admits to Claire (when they're on the ship, leaving Scotland and heading back for America) that he didn't tell Rachel anything about his family because their 'courtship' was so rushed.
  
  Also, as a side-note to this ... can anyone tell me which chapter in ABOSAA that Ian sees Emily again (and learns that he has a child with her?) I am trying to find it, but have had no such luck and I *know* it exists, I'm not going crazy ... and I am 99% sure it's in ABOSAA?

  • Danielle - you can ask questions like this on the Books Board, feel free, and don't worry about spoilers, Judie sets a moratorium while we discuss new releases on the (wait for it...) New Releases Board, but after that date anything is fair game on Books. To answer your questions though, I don't think Rachel knows much about Ian's past but I don't think she'll be surprised and I think she'll take it in stride - she knows who and what Ian is. Ian learns about Emily's child (there is huge debate about whether Lizard is Ian's, I personally think he is) in EITB, chapter 40 'The Blessing of Bride & Michael'. (pg 404 in green slime).         • Ah, luckily (and thanks to people on this board!) I went back and read certain parts of 'Echo', to find the scene where Ian meets Lizard. William learns of Ian's wife, Emily, in chapter 37 - when they bump into each other on the road. William asks Ian how he came to be Mohawk, and Ian explains he married a woman of the Kahnyen'kehaka. When William asks as to her whereabouts, Ian cryptically says "I am no longer wed." And a little further into the chapter, William is present when a man called Glutton tells Ian of Emily's current situation (married, with a son and daughter) - though William is fluttering in and out of this conversation, because of an injury. But William is conscious enough to put two-and-two together, Ian's interest in this woman's home life, and his previous statement "I am no longer wed."   • Favourite book is Outlander because it started it all, otherwise the one I'm reading now. Favourtie character is Himself. Who I would like to be is Claire (for the sake of Himself, of course, otherwise I would like to be the nonexistent Mrs Lord John, I've always liked John).   • I think the scene in EITB where Claire was watching the men have their spring bath and comparing backsides. Besides the lust for dear Jamie's, there was the beautiful sensual perusal, and the freedom Claire has found as a woman to enjoy such a view - lots of 18th century women would see something like this, but how many would sit and enjoy it then admit that to themselves?   It is hard to believe that it is already October. Crisp air and turning leaves in this pollsketeer's area are really helping me realize that Summer is gone. We can imagine Fall on Fraser's Ridge and what Jamie and Claire and the other tenants might be doing to prepare for the coming Winter. All the others are good, but the bee hunt shows something we don't see often, we see Claire/Jamie and Claire/Bree, but, even though we know how close Jamie and Bree are we don't see a lot of Jamie/Bree together.   • A good digging stick is essential and actually fun to use. Willow bark contains an aspirin-like substance. Mullion leaves can be used as toilet tissue. Sugar can disinfect wounds.   • There are so many wonderful dog scenes, but I keep coming back to DOA when Ian first shows Rollo to Jamie and Claire - her reaction is "that is not a dog. It's a wolf. A bloody big wolf". And Jamie (damn him anyway *G*) immediately looks at the dog, assessing his size and shape, wondering about his parentage. Ian in all of his gangling 17 year-old-ness, already loving his dog. And when Rollo licks Ian Claire's reaction is "testing him for flavour." And finally Jamie has the last word "I badly need a drink, Sassenach". Which pretty much sums up Jamie's life some days.
