• Another Love That Cannot Speak Its Name: Love Between the Races CatherineM and JessieR -- JessieR, 21:55:11 02/15/09 Sun
  The inauguration of Barack Obama and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln have brought renewed attention to the legacy of race and slavery in America. Regardless of one’s political preferences, the election of the first African American president of the United States is a historic event in a country where it took a civil war and a brave president to eliminate slavery, and decades more to eliminate legal segregation. Obama’s election is also noteworthy in terms of normalizing interracial relationships. It hasn’t been that long that an interracial marriage like that of Obama’s parents would have been deemed illegal in many states. The Supreme Court did not overturn race-based laws prohibiting marriage until 1967, only 42 years ago. Change has clearly come to America, at least in terms of enlightened thinking about race.
  
  Such enlightened thinking, however, was more difficult to find in the colonial America of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels, though clearly it was present in the minds of her time-traveling protagonists and several members of their families. Having enlightened 20th-century people like Claire, Bree, and Roger living in a world of indentured servitude and chattel slavery generates conflict that allows Gabaldon to explore the social, moral, and legal ramifications of racism.
  
  One thing Gabaldon never shies away from is the conflict arising from sexual relationships, especially those that are transgressive. In 18th-century America, interracial sex was not just frowned upon; it was a criminal act. Yet the historical record shows that criminalizing interracial sex worked about as well as criminalizing homosexuality: it may have made it dangerous, but it didn’t stop it from happening.
  
  In A Breath of Snow and Ashes, Jocasta, Ulysses, Duncan, and Phaedre willingly accept the danger of such relationships by seeking out sexual partners of a different race. Gabaldon likes to see what happens when her characters rub up against the cultural norms, and in the case of this daring quartet of slaveholders and slaves, what happens is a multifaceted exploration of love, sex, race, and marriage.
  
  This month on Broch Talk we will discuss the interracial sexual relationships among Jocasta, Ulysses, Duncan, and Phaedre in A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Discussion will begin on Monday, February 23rd. On that day, we will post a prompt and several questions to get things started.

I know in this post we're concentrating on A Breath of Snow and Ashes but I have a race relations question from The Fiery cross, I never quite understood why Mrs. Beardsley leaves her baby behind. We know that later on she ends up at the moron camp with her lover. If the baby was clearly biracial, being that of her runaway slave lover and not that of the late Mr. Beardsley, wouldn’t she want to keep it? I don’t know, it just always struck me as odd that if she was planning to steal away to find him she would want to take their child, instead of leaving her with a couple she doesn’t know.       • I think Fanny expected Claire and Jamie to keep her baby. She saw how compassionate they were to her and her horrific husband and figured they would care for a baby. And then again, maybe Fannie was in such a confused, desperate state, she just wasn't thinking at all and acting on instinct. She was most likely in pain, weak, and heading into the wilderness.     • Unkind though it may be to say, Fanny struck me as one of those unanalytical people that stuff just happens to. Fanny doesn't seem to think that she can control anything, even her own life. I don't think she can envision the future, if that makes any sense. For several years, she lived with Beardsley, counting the days. But even though she was frequently alone, she didn't try to leave. Even thinking Mr B was a wife-murderer, she didn't run. After the stroke, Fanny tortured B just to see him suffer and because she could, but she had no plans beyond today. I wonder if she didn't leave the camp because she assumed she'd be punished if she stayed, revealed as the mother of a black. She told her lover in the canebrake she never would have left the baby if the baby hadn't been black. A bit of shame and fear of society's reprisal was enough to make Fanny run, but her lack of thought and faith in herself made her leave the babe. (NT) -- Carol P, 18:33:42 02/18/09 Wed

  • k. There is a scene in Fiery cross where the family has gathered at the Big house. Jamie is teaching Germaine to play a game. Fergus is telling Roger about a bawdy french song. The women are discussing childbirth. I just love the flow of this, the normalcy of it. It never mentions that it happens fireside, but it does say that the women retire to the hearth.
