In reply to: KathleenM 's message, "LOL, Lemora! Even though it isn't a happy moment, one authentic seeming interaction between them was when Brianna threw the poker through the window glass after learning about Jamie. Now--I've experienced moments of anger that great and wished I had something to throw (although more at my Dad than my Mom!). That kind of anger is fortunately rare but it seemed real to me! :-)" on 19:52:34 05/05/10 Wed

My friend's daughter did precisely the same thing in anger at her father! My first thought was, "What a brat! Claire, you and Jamie gave up each other for THIS!?" Then, I thought about that century-old Victorian glass window being ruined by this jerk of a daughter, and replaced with modern glass that lacks the same quality. But, my reaction was more I-don't-like-her than,"how typical!" I was also seeing where the story was headed, with Bree and Roger being set up for romance, and I've never thought it was a good idea to marry the first guy you sleep with: And then, they didn't "Do It!" Which felt totally unrealistic to me, also. And it was the sixties, but apart from having Brianna say "groovy" once or twice, absolutely no attempt at verisimilitude in the period was attempted. But, this entire plot direction never made any sense to me, and felt inauthentic in characterization and tone.

When Brianna was first introduced in DIA, I didn't really think of her as out of sync with the 60s because she acted very like my cousins and my older brothers. I know it was a time of great experimentation and freedom but not everyone jumped into the sack with the first guy (or girl) they fell for--I saw that first hand. I also thought Brianna was pretty sheltered despite the times because her parents had focused so much on her rather than the problems in their marriage and because she went to Catholic school. I know that Catholic school kids are normal and just as obnoxious as the next group but they can also be rather parochial.

I didn't like her much--Brianna, I mean. But later I began to feel kind of sorry for her and could excuse her behavior in DIA. I actually liked her less in Drums because I thought she should have grown up a bit and she still seemed too petulant and dependent. Over time, I have changed my opinion though and thought about what she had been through and how her own background influenced her decisions, etc. She seemed a product of her environment and heredity and I began to accept her as a character I could like. I don't have the hots for Roger like some do (he's a kid to me, I guess!) but I do like him and his response to Bree. He's been good to/for her and I try to see her through his eyes.

In terms of Claire/Brianna--JMHO, of course, but the relationship seems authentic enough to me because I don't think it was ever a standard mom/daughter thing. Claire isn't a typical mother, for various reasons, of course, and consequently, her relationship with her daughter is affected. Her basic outspokenness, the TT, the loss of Jamie, the violence she had witnessed, both in her time of war and in his, the feeling of being out of sync (early feminist) with her time--all that colors Claire's interactions with Brianna and they just aren't typical.

Anyway, thanks for reading--looking back I think it's one big run-on sentence but I'm too tired to change it!--I always enjoy reading your comments, even when I am just lurking.

I began to like Roger and Brianna more as time wore on --when he evolved into a minister and when she settled into motherhood with the two kids. I have liked them both most of all in "Echo".
