Subject: WELCOME to the MARCH/APRIL POLL

Throughout the series, Ms. Gabaldon has had Claire, Bree and Roger make references to modern terms (songs, sayings, etc.) while in the past. For this month's poll, what is your favorite modern reference that is used. It is OK to use quotes from "An Echo in the Bone".

Have fun and the poll will close in approximately 7 days.

[> I'll get us started. I am a rabid Monty Python fan, so my favorite is when Bree goes back, finds Jamie and sees Claire and they exclaim, "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!". -- Rollaine, 10:07:57 03/29/10 Mon

[> [> I have to second this one. Love Monty Python! I laughed out loud when I read that reference. -- Lady Oliver, 07:56:00 03/30/10 Tue

One of my favorites is when the Indians want Bear killer to help them with the white bear, and Claire & Bree say "smarter than the avergae bear!", and break into giggles.

[> I think my favorite was when Rollo came to get Claire when Ian was hurt, & she said "Bloody Timmy's in the Well" or something like that. I snorted a good laugh at that. -- Cathryn_L, 11:28:25 03/29/10 Mon

[> My favorites are the references to Beatle songs. I'm guessing herself is a fan. -- Lady Lukkarinen, 12:35:52 03/29/10 Mon

[> "Smarter than the average bear," Brianna agreed, her mouth twitching slightly. (from FC, where they're hunting the ghost-bear) -- SueW, 13:05:15 03/29/10 Mon

[> My favorite is when Claire protests on the road, after she has just adjusted Jamie's dislocated shoulder and cleaned his latest wound through the shoulder, claiming he can't possibly ride; should be in hospital; and his wound should be "disinfected". The men look at her strangely, and Dougal jokes that Jamie will have to go without being "disinfected" having no idea what this weird English mystery woman is talking about. -- Lemora, 14:57:05 03/29/10 Mon

[> [> Conversely, I also like the scene where Claire, Roger and Bree are at the Manse and everyone speculates about what might have been used for toilet paper "back then". Claire automatically answers, "Mullein leaves" and hastily adds that she found out by doing "historical research" after Roger gives her a penetrating, puzzled look. -- Lemora, 14:59:35 03/29/10 Mon

[> It's not really a saying or song, but love all the times when Claire is trying to explain germs to Jamie and Ian. Also when she shows Jamie his sperm under the microscope....too funny! -- krissn78, 17:02:04 03/29/10 Mon

[> [> Totally agree about the sperm scene. No matter how many times I read the books when I get to that scene it always cracks me up. Just Jamie's reaction is priceless. -- Latinlassie, 18:57:06 03/29/10 Mon

[> "Who in bloody hell do you think you are--frigging John Wayne!" from Outlander. Love it! -- AJ, 21:30:34 03/29/10 Mon

[> [> That's my favorite too .... I was reading along to be sure someone posted it! It took me off guard while reading it because I was so absorbed in the story, but it was completely believable and I totally loved to it. -- Shel, 05:41:26 03/30/10 Tue

[> I like the one where Claire says, "Jamie, do not pass go; do not collect $200.00." This was either "Outlander" or "Dragonfly". -- Lemora, 15:52:19 03/30/10 Tue

[> Clare's often used "Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ" always cracks me up. I know it shocks everyone to hear this woman swear but they must also wonder about her version. -- ruthlass, 20:35:06 03/30/10 Tue

[> [> Yeah, that always makes me smile when she says that. Isn't that how Donner knew she was a time traveller too? -- Lady Oliver, 07:45:25 03/31/10 Wed

[> Wow, there are so many good ones here but I think my favourite is the 'Timmy in the well', maybe because Major MacDonald is such a poor baffled creature at the best of times. Am I the only one though who wonders why Bree or Roger didn't claim a few copy-rights or a couple of patents before they went back....you know copyright 'Yesterday' or patent sulphur matches - or ether. I am very intrigued by Bree's comment about how many things were 'invented' and how many 'remembered' (ie by TT's). -- jayn, 11:41:48 03/31/10 Wed

[> [> Changed my mind. My favourite is just after their first post-reunion mmmphing (Voy) when Claire says sex is "like bicycle riding, I expect" and Jamie asks "Have bye-sickleses got lots of hair then?" -- jayn, 05:52:34 04/01/10 Thu

[> There are so many I love like "Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ" but I think the one I found I liked the most (strangely enough because its uttered by a character I don't really care for) is when "Ottertooth" approaches Claire in ABOSAA and asks her if the name Ringo Starr means anything to her. It was just such a shock at the time with everything else that was going on that it has stuck with me a guess! -- Cait, 08:55:35 04/02/10 Fri

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> That was Donner. Claire never met Ottertooth (only his skull). But yeah that was surprising to see the name Ringo Starr mentioned in the 18th Century. -- Lady Oliver, 07:46:33 04/06/10 Tue

[> [> [> It seemed to me to be an odd choice of names, I would have gone with Paul or John, or sang like he did with Bree. -- jayn, 17:02:17 04/07/10 Wed

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> [> [> Well, I'm sure he figured that the name Ringo Starr couldn't be confused with anyone else. John and Paul are pretty common names, so there pretty well could've been someone named Paul McCartney or John Lennon in the 18th Century. Ringo Starr, on the other hand, is pretty unique. -- Lady Oliver, 07:16:00 04/09/10 Fri

[> My favorite is also "Timmy's in the well" when Rollo attempt to lead Claire to help Ian. It probably strikes me funny because I watched Timmy and Lassie when the shows originally aired. -- Rosemarie, 19:07:51 04/02/10 Fri

[> I like when in DOA Claire asks Jamie and Ian how they found her. "...don't tell me the bloody horse led you to me, like Lassie?" And Ian says, "It's a gelding Auntie, no a lassie." -- LisaW, 06:50:53 04/06/10 Tue
