Subject: I'd like to echo other posters thoughts about how DG makes the historical aspects of her storyline come to life. When I was in uni, taking history, one of my absolute favourite professors made the history he was teaching "come alive." You realized very easily that all these people had lives just like ours, loved and hated, tried and failed and kept on going because that is life. He was so enthusiastic about his subject that one couldn't help but feel the same way. I can see very clearly why DG was a teacher in a previous life and would believe that she would be the same type of professor - one who could light a fire in her students. She certainly has captured our hearts and minds. Some people strive for excellence and she is one. Also, the particular culture in which the series is set speaks to me. I live in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and my area is steeped in Scottish tradition. More >>>
In reply to: CatherineM. and JessieR. 's message, "While we wait excitedly for Echo, we thought to do something a bit different this time. Instead of posting a reading assignment and discussion question, let's explore the addictive appeal of these books. Addiction experts talk about the addictive properties of substance addictions (such as alcohol, drugs, nicotine) and process addictions (gambling, compulsive exercising etc.) but also about the addictive propensities of the people who become addicted -- and we'd all probably admit to being addicted to these books. The fact that there is a countdown clock on the Books Board page, frequent discussion about which version to purchase (or to purchase all versions!), and the excitement we feel about DG’s book tour can tell us something important about ourselves. Can we figure out what that is and share it with one another? This is an opportunity for you ladies to do a mini-read of yourselves and your relationship to the books and to each other before we are swept up by the new novel!" on 20:50:29 08/30/09 Sun

I was a Highland dancer for almost 25 years throughout my childhood and adolescence and early adulthood. Music and dance are important here as are the close-knit "family" type of relationships within neighbourhoods and communities. The ways in which DG portrays the culture feels very true to me. It speaks to my heart the way Alistair MacLeod's novels speak to me about Cape Breton and the people who live here. I remember having an actual pain in my heart after finishing "No Great Mischief." It felt so true. And as far as the question about "girl porn," I would like to think that I hope to emulate J and C's relationship rather than something more sordid as could be conjured by the thoughts of pornography, for some. I respect the unbelievable honesty and open-ness shown between J and C and I would hope to achieve a similar level in my own relationship. (That said, I love the Treats of the Day on the Social Board - especially Gerard Butler!) :D

My husband and I just finished a motorcycle ride from Ky. to N.S. I just wanted to say how beautiful your home is and how friendly the people were. I loved Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail. We went to the living history Scottish/Galic village in Iona. We hope to return some day.
