[> For me it was the moment when Jamie and Claire would be alone after he rescued her from her abductors. I feared what they would say to each other about rape, and how they would say it. How do you hold something so violent between you? -- lady, 09:58:32 10/03/08 Fri

[> Hands down for me was Claire's abduction & rape. While all the others are horrifying (esp. Jamie's), the fact that we are "inisde" Claire's head and almost experiencing what is happening to her first hand, was too much for me. I felt as if I were her, it seemed endless and frankly, just too graphic for me. I will never read that again. With Jamie, even though it is horrible, the fact that we hear him tell it to her and she is with him, kind of buffers the blow-for me at least. -- Rollaine, 10:22:55 10/03/08 Fri

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> I feel the exact same way. I agree that while Jamie's was bad, it was somehow easier to hear him tell it but to "experience" Claire's with her was terrifying. -- JenK, 10:44:31 10/03/08 Fri

[> [> Ditto for me. I knew she would be reunited with Jamie in time, but it took so long and I kept thinking.. it's gonna get worse, it's gonna get worse... before he could find her. I feared she'd end up way off somehow like on a strange boat again and be really separated like in Voyager. -- AngieLass, 11:10:51 10/03/08 Fri

[> [> Yes, Claire's abduction and rape -- a definite nail biter. How much can one woman endure? Good grief... took them long enough to find her. I have yet to do a reread of ABOSAA, because of this story. It was too heartbreaking, too frustrating. Even reading the comments, it makes me sick to my stomach. *sigh* -- ladyphantom, 11:40:32 10/03/08 Fri

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> [> I'm glad you said that, ladyphantom, because I too have been unable to re-read ABOSAA because of that business and also the fact that everything in J&C's life was falling apart. I have re-read the other 5 books at least 3 times - and I finally did re-read ABOSAA, just finishing last week. This sounds strange, but when I was reading ABOSAA the first time (I just "discovered" the series about 18 months ago, so was able to read them all back-to-back, with no breaks to wait for the next book to come out. -- ScarlettO, 11:31:37 10/06/08 Mon

[> [> [> [> Whoops - hit '"ENTER" too soon -- anyhow, when I was reading ABOSAA the first time, I (for some reason - I know DG has said she never said this) that ABOSAA was the last book in the series. I guess now that I know that there will be more story (and hopefully neatly tied-up story-lines - I'm a sucker for happy endings) - I can re-read it without the sense of dispair I felt the first time. Is that crazy? *g* -- ScarlettO, 11:36:47 10/06/08 Mon

[> Roger's hanging would be the moment for me. When Brianna and Jamie go thundering off in search for him and when they do - that one still moment when Brianna realizes that Roger could still be alive! The suspence held my stomach in knots. The relief that they found him, the fear they would be too late and what exactly they would find, and finally when Claire cuts into his throat so he could breathe. It seemed I held my breath too and breathed a sigh of relief when air hissed into his lungs. -- Jay-Lee, 10:44:01 10/03/08 Fri

[> [> me too! I admit I had to jump ahead a few chapters and look for Rogers name because I was so scared he was dead. I always knew Jamie wouldn't die but I wasn't so sure about Roger. -- susiej, 14:58:10 10/04/08 Sat

[> Wentworth. Or, specifically, the scene in OUTLANDER where Claire has to leave Jamie in the hands of BJR, knowing that he's already suffered dreadfully. It's so hard on re-reading, because you know (and dread!) what's coming, but you're helpless to stop it. -- Karen Henry, 12:45:02 10/03/08 Fri

[> Omg - only one? There are two that scared the crap outa me but I'll go with the first - in V, when Geillis shoots Jamie in the head in the cave on Abandawe. At that point I didn't know there would be more The Books, I thought he ws a goner. Second was FC - "holy s*** - they hung Roger!!" -- kgp, 13:15:15 10/03/08 Fri

[> As for Claire's abduction, I knew she would be rescued, in some condition, heck, she was writing the narrative. It did bother me when she was gagged, because I'm very claustrophobic and I felt as though I was suffocating with her. But the biggest "Oh, crap!!!! moment was when they hanged Roger. I was absolutely sobbing and heartbroken. -- Melina, 16:01:30 10/03/08 Fri

[> Jamie giving Claire the choice on Craig na Dun in Outlander, and Claire having to choose between Frank and Jamie for the first and last time. Even though it was only a short passage and the results were revealed reasonably quickly, Jamie's love for Claire was so clear during this passage, and she made the commitment that would bind them together forever. -- Chrissylass, 17:01:19 10/03/08 Fri

[> TFC - Rogers hanging, I even took the book to read at work because I had left it at such a nail biting moment. My co-worker Jackie keep telling me to breathe. -- Janelle N, 18:53:21 10/03/08 Fri

[> Favorite? Hmm- Voyager, when Claire pushes open the door of the print shop and walks in. Will it really be Jamie in there, or did she just throw herself across two hundred years and leave her daughter behind (ahead, actually) for nothing? -- SueW, 21:44:10 10/03/08 Fri

[> [> I bite nails all the time, but this bit, Claire meeting Jamie after 20 years, was something I could not read and I couldn't be wirthout reading: all the scene when she walked in until when they had to leave Edinburgh in a rush. -- Margit, 10:38:29 10/05/08 Sun

[> Roger's hanging. I shudder to think of it still -- Wee, 05:10:34 10/04/08 Sat

[ Edit | View ]

[> Looks like I'm with the majority on this one--definitely Roger's hanging. Even the second time around, it was still nail biting. I just could hardly believe it. I understand why a lot of people picked Claire's rape, and that was extremely emotional, but I was crying rather than almost shaking. I knew she'd be ok in the end. -- Stephsicola, 07:12:23 10/04/08 Sat

[ Edit | View ]

[> Roger's hanging, hands down. There is sort of a guarantee (more Books) that Claire will live, and so while her abduction and rape were horrific, I knew she would survive. There was no such guarantee that Roger would make it, so his hanging almost did me in. -- Merrymags, 08:58:50 10/04/08 Sat

[> Roger's hanging, so many good reasons listed by others. It's a toss up whether my tension was worse waiting to see if he would survive at all or if he would be able to rebuild his little shelter in his mind. The tension of whether Roger would once again BE Roger was horrible, and it lasted for hundreds of pages (seems like). -- Carol P, 09:41:22 10/04/08 Sat

[> I was definitely biting my nails when Bree started to draw Roger’s picture and Jamie and Ian went pale along with the fight scene between Jamie and Bree when Claire took out her gold wedding ring and it pinged across the table….So much emotion and heartbreak. -- Mitzi, 10:26:41 10/04/08 Sat

[> Claire's abduction - I just kept thinking, Damn it, Jamie, where the hell are you?!! I NEVER NEVER thought he would fail to rescue Claire in time. I couldn't conceive that she would be raped or killed b/c he would surely get there in time. -- LissC, 13:54:35 10/04/08 Sat

[> While all of the above were terrifying for me, for some reason I still get chills running up my back when I think of the scene where Claire is alone in the forrest sheltering under tree roots and she can see the light coming toward her from the distance until it is right in front of her. It was the night she found the skull with fillings in the teeth. She had lost her shoes and when Jamie finds her he tells her he knew she was in trouble because her shoes had mysteriously appeared at the door to their cabin. That spirit scared the bejesus out of me! -- Bandruidh, 14:19:34 10/04/08 Sat

[> The scene in MacRannoch's cabin, in "Outlander", where Claire is trying, having survived the wolves --vainly it seems while precious time is lost-- to persuade him and his men to rescue Jamie from Wentworth. (Claire's rape was so surreal that I almost couldn't relate to it -- and I'll never read it again.) -- Lemora, 23:23:37 10/04/08 Sat

[> Although everything everyone has said already were horrible and I was a ball on nerves, the one moment when I really just freaked out and almost didn't keep going was when Jamie gets the letter at Lallybroch from the Bonnie Prince telling Jamie that he signed Jamie's name for him, thus forcing him to go to Culloden. That moment was the most dramatic for me. I almost stopped reading the rest of the Book.(Not to mention I had to stop because I was sobbing so hard I couldn't read the page, I'm sure everyone here has had that problem before : ) ) I had to make myself sit down and keep going, because I knew whatever came after it was not going to be good. -- Elizabeth, 12:29:17 10/05/08 Sun

[ Edit | View ]

[> As the books have so many nail-biting moments it 's difficult to choose just one of them. Roger's hanging, or Brianna sexual abuse by Stephen Bonnet being some of the most tense, but I agree with Elizabeth that Culloden was awful, we all know what was going to happen, and though our secret hopes were that Jamie HAD to survive, I was not very sure after the wonderful love scene between he and Claire. Tears were running when I closed the book, unable to keep on reading -- Covadonga, 23:45:24 10/05/08 Sun

[> Jamie's horrific torture at the hands of JBR in Wentworth - I didn't know there would be more books, while with Claire's abduction, I did, so I knew Jamie would show up sooner or later and make things right. -- Lady Cate, 04:59:30 10/06/08 Mon

[> poll -- bree's mom, 09:49:34 10/07/08 Tue

Definate nail biter for me was the snake bite on the hunt when roger was alone with jamie all night not knowing if jamie would die and imagining having to tell Claire and Bree.

[ Edit | View ]

[> It took me a few days to even let myself think about this again....it was when Claire was abducted, bound, gagged and then her nose was broken. She was choking on her own blood, suffocating. OMG. Poking her tongue out past the gag to sip bits of air. All of it was too vivid, too real....the stuff of nightmares. -- Barb J., 17:37:03 10/07/08 Tue

[ Edit | View ]

[> This has been really hard for me to decide, and ultimately, I have to give in to a tie, sorry. Roger's hanging almost edges a win, but Claire's rape just hits too close to home for me, esp. the moment immediately preceding her rescue (when she can hear them coming, but can't do anyhting). -- Woogie, 08:10:00 10/09/08 Thu

[ Edit | View ]

[> Has to be Claire's abduction and rapes. This was the only time in the books that I HAD to put the book down because I couldn't bear what was happening. I, very gently, closed the book, went to bed, kept waking with worry for Claire, and then couldn't make myself pick up the book again until late that night. DH thought I was nuts - and I wondered as well. LOL -- CathyS, 09:08:54 10/09/08 Thu

[> I'm a bit late on the draw, but...It is hard to pick one since there were many that kept me awake at night. I think the most nailbiting moment of the whole series was Roger's hanging. Second was Claire's arrest and trial and third was Brianna's kidnapping. -- Lady JenF, 16:14:26 10/09/08 Thu

[ Edit | View ]

[> Wow, this was hard to choose but I will have to say Roger's hanging, because I was completely caught off guard with that one. And when Claire says too late, OMG I really did cry. -- LisaW, 06:50:15 10/10/08 Fri

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> I have to agree w/ Roger's hanging being the most tense for me too. I was just sure he'd be saved just in time. Instead I was blindsided and saying "No, Noo, Nooooo!" when it was found to be too late. The Claire rape was tense also, but I knew she lived, so that helped get me thru that, some. -- Cathryn_L, 11:09:33 10/10/08 Fri

[> Roger's hanging was terrible. But I think Ian's decision to stay with the Mohawk, and that terribly sad parting with Jaime, was the culmination of the tensest time for me - Roger's being given to the Mohawk, Jamie & Brianna's strangement, Ian and Jamie's parting... all very sad. -- jayne johnson, 17:38:04 10/11/08 Sat

[> Roger's hanging, for it was such a gut wrenching scene. Even during Claire's abduction I knew she'll be rescued, but I really feared for Roger's life. -- Helka, 09:33:41 10/12/08 Sun

[> Toward the end of O when Jamie tells Claire to leave him, that he can't be with her anymore without it being tied to the torture at the hands of BJR. I mean his head was really, really messed up and I couldn't see how Claire was going to bring him back. The nail biting continued with the drug enduced, "dream-fight." -- MEL, 14:52:09 10/27/08 Mon

[> [> I completely agree with you Mel on this one. This was the absolute nail biting moment for me too. I couldn't fathom that Jamie was trying to send Claire away. I was so heartbroken for the both of them. -- Chriselda, 06:17:07 10/28/08 Tue

[> Claire's rape. I was reading it while camping with my Girl Scout troop in October - it was cold but I stayed up waay too late reading. I couldn't go to sleep until I found out she was back with Jamie again. Right when the drum started, my flashlight died! I found one near one of the girls' bunks and resumed reading. -- Debra Mc, 16:44:55 11/02/08 Sun
