We were there in late May/early June. It was cool, so take layers, but still bring things for warmer weather. Layers definitely. We had some "butter" fleece from Sahalie that were just terrific, not to heavy, but plenty warm under light outer shells. We started in Edinburgh, but then drove about 1000 miles over 10 days throughout the highlands. Did some hiking as well as the usual castle/ruin tours. Again, weather mixed, but not bad. You just count on rain at any time.

As far as money, we were told that the credit card companies or sometimes the establishment adds an additional 3% to credit card charges. We did take most of what we were planning to spend in travelers checks. If you have American Express, the office in Edinburgh (on Prince St.)didn't charge to exchange and had the best rate. So before we left Edinburgh, we cashed quite a few. I never really felt uneasy walking around with lots of cash, but then I only had a reasonable amount in my wallet, keeping most in a hidden pocket of my purse. The larger post offices will also cash TCs, but not all. So we ended doing mainly cash for day to day expenses, but credit cards for some lodging and definitely for gas. That was really an OUCH!! Used the ATM a couple of times, I just always look for a bank one rather than some random company.

We really had a fabalous time. I did all the planning myself and online bookings. He drove and I navigated, no real problems. Don't know if you are set on the tour thing, but we really wouldn't have done any other way. If you want some suggestions for places to visit, just let me know.
