Don't listen to your buddy, hire a car! OK so our roads are tiny and windy (twisty) compared to most of yours, but just drive slowly. It's not that difficult to get used to driving on the left (I've done it the other way round in Europe) - just use your friend as a second person to keep an eye out for traffic etc. The freedom to come and go in your own time is worth it.
