Like Anna, I live in Scotland - in St Andrwes actually (famed for golf but plenty of other very historical things happened there too). I assume you will be going to a summer school run by Stirling University and I bet one of your tutors will be Richard Oram. Pay attention to him - he is truly good at Scottish history.

As for advice, one good investment when you come would be to buy yourself an Explorer Pass from Historic Scotland, who are the keepers of many famous buildings and historical sites, such as the Castles at Stirling, Doune and Edinburgh. It is quite possible, though, that your course will include visits to local famous places, such as the Wallace Monument, Castle Campbell and the site of the Battle of Bannockburn but you may have to pay extra for these.

Also, always have a sweater and waterproofs of some sort to hand - it can be hot (by Scottish standards, that is!24C is pretty typical on a good summer's day) but equally you can get caught unawares by short, sharp showers and cool breezes. Oh, and if you are planning on doing much walking, a decent and comfortable pair of shoes or hiking trainers - there is nothing worse than having sore feet or blisters, however much you have enjoyed the tour of an historical site.

Goodness, I could go on for ages with ideas, having done Mediaeval History at St Andrews University but I'll stop now - I wouldn't want to spoil your sense of anticipation at meeting the unexpected!
