Subject: We rented a car (in Glasgow) just for touring the Highlands and this was a very convenient way to visit our chosen destinations on our schedule. >>>
In reply to: Debbie M 's message, "Thanks so much for your post. I'm going next year and every bit of info helps. Could you tell me what hotel you stayed in and how you got around? If by car, did you find the driving difficult? Thanks" on 13:18:25 05/06/08 Tue

The DH'S did the driving while Maire and I sat in the back and talked. We only see each other every 3 years or so and we would much rather chat than drive. The roads in Scotland are much better than in Ireland and though I didn't actually do the driving my DH confirmed this and said the driving was fine. We stayed in B & B's both in Fort William and Inverness. I would highly recommend "The Grange" overlooking Loch Linnhe in Fort William where we stayed for 2 nights. Ask for the Rob Roy room, where Jessica Lange stayed while filming the movie, though all of the rooms are lovely and really, really nice owners. We stayed at "Ivybank Guest House" in Inverness. It was a beautiful home, but we found the owner to be a little too anal so I wouldn't stay there again.

Our Irish friends dropped us off in Perth, a really beautiful town, where we enjoyed lunch at an outdoor cafe surrounded by flower boxes everywhere and cobble/stone streets. They continued on to Glasgow airport and Ireland while we caught the train to Edinburgh. Their train system/schedules were very convenient. We walked to our hotel from the station. I can't remember where we stayed in Edinburgh, but it was a hotel and not a B & B. We probably chose the location because it was within walking destination of Old Town and New Town AND it was close to the train station, which was important because we had a very early departure to catch our flight home. It was either on Prince's Street or one of the little adjoining side streets. Edinburgh is a very walkable city. We didn't drive anywhere. I can't imagine why you would even need a car. Just make sure you check the hotel's location on a city map before you go ahead and book it. And have a really great time. Then come back here and post it.
