Well, the hospital that Claire worked at, right next to Notre Dame, was really there, but it's not anymore. I believe you can get an idea of what the area was like, by going underneath Notre Dame. At the front of the plaza, on the far side from the cathedral, is the entrance to an archaeological excavation of the area. There was no plaza at that time, rather the area was crowded with shops and houses. I think the building that was the hospital is still there, not sure what it is or if you can tour it.

There are also a couple of places where you can see the old city walls, particularly to the northwest. I think the walls would still have been in place when J & C were there.

Other than that, I would have to reread DIA and check my travel notes, not sure what else is real. I get the feeling that the arondissement (sp? - neighborhood) where Jamie's (uncle?) had his house and shop really existed, so you could probably walk around there. My memory says it was to the east - J & C landed on the coast, and reached the house before the reached the city center.

I personally love to walk and observe the people, the streets, and the architectural details. I like ParisWalks by Landes & Landes, published by Henry Holt as a guidebook for my walks.

I also like Rick Steves' guidebook - he has one for Paris that has, among other things, a mini-tour of the top things to see at the Louvre, for instance. It's good b/c it gets you to the best things, then you can explore more on your own if you want, or quit if you've had enough.

Oh! that reminds me - there is also an archeological area at the Louvre where they have excavated the original motte & bailey castle that was on the site - also very interesting to me!

Hope your trip is fantastic!
