I just returned from two wonderful weeks in Edinburgh and The Highlands. I had great weather - sunshine everyday but one, and temperatures around 18'C / 65'F. I joined a hiking tour for 4 days of my vacation in the Loch Laggan area. It was so warm that I was in shirt-sleeves most of the day.

The local people I met said May and October were usually considered the best months for good weather. But, that doesn't mean it won't rain. :) I packed far too many warm clothes. I'd suggest a couple of sweaters, and a few t-shirts, as layering worked well there. Also take a hat with a brim if you'll be outside a lot - I actually came back with a suntan on my face and arms. You probably won't need shorts. I would recommend really good walking shoes if you'll be walking a fair amount. Edinburgh is quite hilly with lots of cobblestones.

As for money, I took $400 cash and two VISA cards, and always used my money belt. Most of the travel books I read didn't recommend travelers checks, as many stores don't want to accept them. I also took money out of ATM machines twice without a problem. In Edinburgh there's an ATM machine inside Jenners on Princes Street - if you're worried about using a more public machine. I was traveling alone and always felt quite safe.
