Yes, the trains are good. So are the Caledonian-MacBrayne ferries (people call them Cal-Mac). Are you interested in the music and culture of the Gaels, the sort of thing Roger sings? Take a train from Glasgow to Oban and a Cal-Mac ferry to the Hebridean islands, which is really the only place you'll hear Gaelic spoken as a first language (yep, they are all fluent in English too, of course.) We were on the Isle of Barra two years ago and heard fabulous Gaelic music. What I thought we'd do was take a rented car over on the ferry, but a friend told me that would require a second mortgage, and she was right -- much cheaper to take the train or leave the rented car on the mainland and rent a second one on the island. Many people love Iona; we never did get there. But Barra, Uist, Lewis/Harris etc are gorgeous in an austere way. And the music is incomparable. You might look to see if you can take in a local concert or even a session of what they call a "Feis"; a feis is a festival in which youngsters (and sometimes adults) are taught Gaelic song, fiddling, bodhran, fiddle, dance, piping, etc. Great fun. Best wishes on your forthcoming marriage!

  • I have ridden trains in England, but not Scotland. It sounds fun, but you might be a bit limiited in your locations, but the buses in Scotland are good too. You could combine the two. A note of caution - we did a highlands bus trip w/ girl scouts and the windy, hilly ride made quite a few of us sick. I read in an earlier msg about canal boat trips - sounded really nice. My husband and I had out honeymoon in Chester, England 16 yrs ago. Being married it great! (NT) -- Good luck and happy wedding!! Lady JenF, 13:05:44 06/09/06 Fri
