Subject: I'm a bad person...

...because I'm completely overwhelmed with work/school. I'm backing out of NaNoWriMo this year beacuse there simply not enough hours in the day. And I've given up on posting homework here. Somebody may read it and it inspires them, but without feedback I have no clue. Should I post more exercises like the character study? That seemed to generate some interest. Because honestly, if I have to dump something in order to get my life back under control, online is a top contender. (Who am I kidding, I'm a junkie...)

And perhaps if you've given up posting homework here, it might be time for the board to try something else. I've thought for quite awhile that it should be done by more than one person, that if we're interested, we should each take a turn to plan and post a homework assignment. Kinda like signing up for doing the quote of the day, so not just one person is responsible for the homework sent out every two weeks. We all have different ideas, and I think it'll shake up the board a bit, and give us the desire to participate a bit more. Just my two cents.

[> [> Thanks for the sympathy Esther -- Debi, 06:09:20 11/05/10 Fri

The reason I've given up on posting is the lack of response, period. I'm busy, but I can find time every couple of weeks to post a homework, and, until lately, participate. I know people have computer woes and nbusy lives too, but I'm a little ocd about checking this board, since it has been such a great help to me in the past. But EVERYONE has scurried away and it's rather disquieting. Maybe I'm taking the silence too personally, but the sound of crickets is really only soothing when they're outside your window on a summer evening, not on your favorite feedback board.
*shrug*

I check it as well and try to post in the HW. I haven't posted other stuff as I didn't want to appear a board hog, but if you want me to kick out some stuff, I'll be glad too.

:-)

Don't worry about being a board hog. If nobody posts, then it's a dead board...

...Sorry to hear you're feeling discouraged by the lack of partipation. I could offer all sorts of excuses about real life and personal issues, but I'm probably just being lazy :(

I agree it's not fair to leave one person responsible for assigning homework, esp when they're getting no response. I have an idea for homework (similar to the character study but to do with setting). Maybe I could post it up and see who bites?

[> Fellow junkie going through withdrawal here >>>> -- Page, 13:41:52 11/06/10 Sat

With the demise of my desktop PC and the hissy fits thrown by my laptop, I've been having to go days without the internet. It's left me feeling not only out of touch with the world, but ignorant, too. I've gotten so used to thinking, "I wonder how this-and-such works?" and then googling it and having my curiosity satisfied. And now I'm just wandering about still wondering.

Worse yet, it's really put a kibosh on my writing. I can't do much of anything without the screen flickering around like a firefly on PCP, or just fading out completely. Every now again I get it to stay on, but those time are few and far between. And I never know how long it'll last.

I completely sympathize with you about the lack of response. For a while there BCC (Before Computer Crap) I was getting a little overwhelmed with writing tips b/c I had gotten in the habit of reading a TON of agent blogs and critting blogs, etc. and feeling like I had to take and utilize every single tip I found. That kept me pulled in about 5,000 different directions at once, and it kept me sweating over Carey On, determined to apply everything I'd read to this poor manuscript. If there's one thing I've learned from having limited internet exposure it's that too much of anything is too bad, whether it be chocolate or writing tips. I hacked that poor book to shreds and came dangerously close to ruining it. Doing that not only discouraged me, it kept me from participating here because I was so consumed with editing. And editing again. And editing those edits, etc.

So. While I'll still read the agent blogs and critting blogs, I've decided I won't submit to them. Instead I'm going to rely on you all here at the Lit Forum, people I trust and who know the story of the book and characters and what I'm trying to accomplish with it. Back when the Lit Forum was my only crit resource I had fun writing my book. I'm now determined to get that back, and I can't think of a better place to do it. Y'all make writing a joy and give the best feedback I've ever gotten.

You'll be seeing a lot more of me here (damn the computer! Full speed ahead!) and that's a promise!

Hugs,

[> [> Come back from the dark side, Page -- debi, 19:34:01 11/06/10 Sat

We miss you. In about a month I'll be freed up for a couple of weeks anyway to maybe participate more. My next classes are Anthropology and a (hopefully) online music course, since UF feels that, despite the bazillion credits I bore into their institution, I still need more elcetives, social sciences and foreign langauge. My reintroduction to college life has been overwhelming but good and I hope to continue the trend, maybe minus some of the overwhelming part. Long story short, I hope to get more writing time in and share here with you. Rayne and Keresh have been speaking to me some so I might have somethign to share soon, barring total collapse on my behalf because of a paper and a final project for this class.

Aaagggghhhhh!!!

...the credit hour distribution in American colleges? All those (pardon me for saying it) useless electives when you could be taking courses that actually apply to your major. DD2 is majoring in Secondary Education with a minor in Math, but only two or three courses per semester have anything to do with either of those studies. Instead she must fill it out with Fine Arts Drama, Photography, History of Rock and Roll (and where was this class when I was in college, I'd like to know?!), World Civilization and Astronomy! If it weren't for electives I'd wager a Bachelor's Degree could be achieved in two years instead of four.

Oh.

Just figured out why they make you take all that. Four years of school costs way more than two. Aha.

Btw, I'm mondo proud of you for going back to school. There are times I think I should go back (there's a four-year college just down the road from me; I can see it from my front yard!) but I'd want to major in history and what am I supposed to do with that besides teach? And I know I don't have the patience to teach! So when you get your degree I'll just enjoy it vicariously!

Hugs,

[> [> [> [> What the hell am I going to do with an English degree? -- Debi, 13:13:33 11/07/10 Sun

Yeah, the way they distribute the credit hours is seriously messed up. Your DD, did she go from a 2 year to a 4 year college? If so, the 2 year college neglects ti inform their transfer students that the requirements for the AA degree don't give you all the required courses you need outside your major to graduate with a BA from the four-year school. I warned my friend who is planning on doing the same thing I've done to make sure he covers all his prerequisite courses BEFORE he transfers.

I could teach with an English degree, but I don't think I'm cut out for the teaching gig. People annoy me waaayy too much.

[> not much of an exucuse here>>> -- Lady Morilka, 12:59:15 11/07/10 Sun

I try to read the things that get postet, but I rarely have the time to do a full crit. That is why I rarly start one at the moment. And if I did, I got a bit frustrated if there was no feedback than. I know that is not a good excuse. But I really like this board and if it is a short thing or just a question I usually post. I really like the idea of the rotating homework, that would give me more opportunitiy to participate, since I only ever write poetry here. and life is quite busy with our newborn (postet at the kirk) at the moment. Something like homework ideas could be prepared if one thinks of it and than I could apply and just drag it out of the closet.
And I promise there is a new poem coming (or more like a song actually) I just have to revise it once more.

[> [> Congratulation and don't be shy! -- Debi, 13:27:38 11/07/10 Sun

If we want to do the rotating homework thingy that's fine, if it will encourage participation. And I honestly don't care what you post, Morilka, it's always good and always welcome. Obviously I don't have time to do a full-on crit nor will I for the foreseeable future. But I still want to post my work, get feedback, even if it consists of, 'hey, that's nice!' and/or, 'good, but how about you try...' Of even someone just acknowledging they read it and liked it. And I want to read everyone else's stuff. You guys inspire me to be well-read, and to try harder to make my work better. THAT'S what I come here for.
